Mixin’ It Up: Devlin & Pretty Titty

Finally! We’re really excited about this mix from Chris Devlin (of Spank Rock fame) and Pretty Titty. It could seriously be one of the best mixes we’ve heard in a long time, if you’ve stumbled upon any other mixes from the Spank Rock camp like Voila, Couche-Tard and the Fabriclive mix CD you’ll know what to expect, ie a mix of old gems, funky shit, new bangers and with tight as hell mixing. There’s so many things going on in this mix and on more than one occasion upon listening to it our jaws dropped to the floor in amazement. These guys truly set the bar. You all need to grab this! Now we’ll let the dj’s do the talking, on to the mix:

“This is a mix for the trip. It’s for driving down RT.1, I83, I95, or even the Autobahn with all its traffic jams and ausfahrts. It’s for biking downtown to meet up for a late breakfast and some morning booze. Fuck it, put it on your Ipod and jog to the club. It’s the sound track to the introspective morning after and the preparation for the night to come. I like to listen to it with headphones. It’s called Sink or Swim cause Titty got evicted and I was pretty broke.

This Mix was more like a Project for me, its alot of fucking around with samples, edits and effects and panning and small remixes and original beats. I wanted to do alot of layering and overdubbing and making it sound as cool and as wierd as possible. I also wanted to include alot of projects that i have worked on as well, therefore this is not a live mix or a reflection of a night at the club (if you wanna hear live mixes contact me @ myspace.com/mrdevlin1. I have recordings of good and bad nights in the booth!!!! They’re all out there on the web).

The mix is part me at home having a good time working on shit, and part thinking about life on the road in the summer. My part of the mix seemed like it needed another point of view, so i invited Pretty Titty from Seattle to do the second half. I really respect Clayton’s (Pretty Titty) taste and music and i have been impressed with the way his djing has evolved since we’ve been doin things together.

TRACKLIST:

Part1.. DEVLIN
At the Royal Castle, we always use these two fucked up Superman records to make our mixtapes, so this dialogue intro sample was a reference to that.

Love away from me…LCD Soundsystem

I don’t even know if this song has a real name, I should have made a phone call. But man all the dj’s i know either chopped this thing out of the LCD Nike 44:33 mix or play it straight off the mix. Anyway it was a favorite song for the SpankRock crew for a while. You could catch XXXchange or Pase or I dropping it religiously from last fall to early this spring…. these are the tracks i mixed in on top of the LCD track..

((Date With The Rain – Eddie Kendricks

I mixed this because it’s one of my newly discovered favorite songs and it fit perfectly with the rain dialouge.

Like This – Chip E
Donnie – The IT
Get The Hoe – Gangsters of Freestyle

I put these tracks in because they reminded me of what LCD might have been going for with their track.

Love on a Summer Night – The McRays))

Summer mix. summer love, C’mon. snuck in the “summer breeze” seals and croft too.

Ladybug – Bumblebee Unlimited (Larry Levan mix)

Man, another track i was really late on, I got this song a couple of years ago in a big folder from a friend and never got into it until the begining of this year. I have to say it’s completely amazing, it seemed to fit well with the LCD track too. had to lay some extra bee samples and enviromental noises in.

Take it Easy – Amanda Blank & M.I.A

This is a track that Amanda and M.I.A did with XXXchange. It’s a real early version so the recording is mad rough but for its use here i thought it was pretty cool.

More Fun To Re Edit – Mr Devlin

This is a re edit I was working on that is not really a re edit just a short beat that i made with a really tweaked out sample of Kraftwerk’s “More Fun to Compute”.. It’s got a four on the floor inro, which is pretty empty. Here I layered a bunch of recordings i did of all the sounds out of my windows in my apartment. School is out for summer so there are alot of kids hanging out in the alley and in the street. I also put in Summer Song – Chad and Jeremy its a really dope song…if you lisen closely you can also hear some of Love’s “Hummingbirds”….After this intro comes the tweaked out sample break, then it goes into a more club type vibe, this were I threw the very spartan and very dope

Comfy In Nautica – Panda Bear

I really like this album and this song in particular .. its erie and beautiful. so i had to try a remix because the pace is do ripe for it. It came out ok … the O G is so good , go buy the album

Comfy in Nautica (Mr.Devlin’s Jamaica Plain Humpbacks Remix) – Panda Bear

My attempt to remix this track.. I used alot wierd underwater bass noises and for this mix i layed alot of whale noises over the track as well… i dont know mannn… I know that Noah is a Panda Bear but i the whales sounded good and kept the ocean summer vibe alive. I extended the outro and went into the smooth…

Sexy MF (clean version) – Pase Rock & Amanda Blank

This track is sexy motherfucker! Pase and Amanda with XXX on the beat. Summer jump off. I like the clean version, any clean version with good sound effects beats the dirty version hands up, thumbs down. I only used two verses for the sake of time. i then go into…

Biting Strafe on Acid/The 40 years after interlude – Mr Devlin

I made most of this beat on the train from my new home in Boston to my native Baltimore. I structured it after Strafe’s ” Set it off”.. I used it here so i could add some more wierd samples and thangs into the mix. you hear in the background….Bob Marley’s “Reaction” and the demo version of Love’s “Hummingbird” which came out in ’67 I think you know the Summer of Love mannnn. Oh no here comes a live scratched in mix , it’s…..

Theme from Police Woman – Henry Mancini

This track is really great, good horns and really dramatic. Masta Killa sampled it. I put the accapella of just my imagination over it because that seems like a good get high in the daytime summer song.

Instructions, Oohs and Ahhs – George Roberts feat. The Neighborhood Kids

Here is a little more neighborhood recordings and an interlude i’ve been working on with the drums from Funk” by Mecco. I like albums with breaks and wierd shit in them this is some of that. from here I go into….

Let’s Finish What We Started (XXXChange and Mr.Devlin’s Italo remix) – Kudu

I have always been impressed when i see Kudu. They are dope. The fellas hold down the chops and Sylvia’s voice and stage presence are commanding. So when Alexxx said you wanna work on this remix i was pumped. We flipped an Italo sample, broke out the poly six and went to work. I came back a few days later and Alex had replaced the original vocals we had (processed) and switched them to these raw vocals. It was exactly what the song needed and we were done. This song isnt so great for a home listen but it is real nice with club speakers.

This is Sick – Switch

I was doing this dramatic ass mix with these two songs on a tour Ron and I did with Pretty Titty this May. So I figured i would put it in here. I think it works pretty well and everybody bugs out when the square ass big bass drops. You got to get out quick though so i would then throw in this next track for more drama.

Roll it, Light it, Smoke it (xxxChange, Devlin, Darko Fully Fitted Remix) – DJ Class

We all had this idea after “Show me what you got” came out. Make a club beat with the “Shaft in Africa” horns. Pase and I were gonna do it, we didn’t. Chipset and I were gonna do it, we didn’t. Well, Scottie B was looking for remixes for an upcoming release so the Fully Fitted crew got it done. It was a 9 AM session.

Lupita (XXXChange and Mr Devlin’s Ferrari Session) – Tito Puente

Made this at the Royal Castle one afternoon with Alexxx, it was a fun little session and i never used it so i figured this was as good a time as any… I put the “Te Mo Ba” by No Nos over it as well

Jungle Fever (Mr Devlin’s Rapture is coming re-edit) – Chakachas

I was just looking for the next piece of this project so i opened the industry respected Garage Band and fucked around for a few hours…this is the result. The vocals are courtesy of DJ David Day..I dont know where its from but this dude is on some dramatic lake of fire shit!!!

Baltimore in June (Outro) – Chipset and Mr.Devlin

This is so unfinished and Chip hates me for including it but, I was having such amazing times going back home and this pretty little begining of a track really summed up the early summer in Baltimore for me. Take it a way PRETTY TITEEEEEEEEEEEE….and don’t talk as much as me!

Part 2…PRETTY TITTY

Intro – Pretty Titty

This is primarily a Phantom Slasher re-edit of Eat the Jeans but there’s also some pieces of the instrumental for Radio Clash, a little Hip Hop Be Bop, some Spankrock, and Moonboots by the Orlanda Riva Sound thrown in to keep it spiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiicy!

Serious Trouble – Zongamin

I love Zongamin! Bongo Song can be the best thing ever but I can’t play that forever. True story: I played Bongo Song at Safari Sam’s in LA and some older hippy character in a wetsuit freaked out so hard that he got yoked and dragged right out of the club. I remember thinking to myself “Oh yeah! Bongos. Duh!” I haven’t played that song since then out of fear that my estranged hippy father might pop out of a storm drain and make the whole experience happen all over again.

Optimo – Liquid Liquid

I am a rabid Liquid Liquid fan. The way the bassline just repeats the same three notes in different patterns over and over, building up til it all breaks with dudes voice hanging over the end. I LOVE IT!!!! Musical genius

Me Mobile (Duckbeats Ringtone Riddim)- Vybz, Jesse Rose, Sinden

What’s cooler than a combination of all three of these guys?

D.A.N.C.E. (Eli & Diplo Mix) – Justice

This is, in my opinion, the only playable version of this song. The original is too slow, the other remixes are ho-hum. Eli kiiiiiiiiills it again.

Put Your Hands Up For NY – Party Crashers Unite (Trouble & Bass)

Rock the Casbah / Club Action (Pretty Titty Re-Edit) – The Clash / Yo Majesty

I really never get tired of hearing Rock the Casbah. I can always close my eyes and vividly remember the video with the sheik running around with a boombox which is what I picture my Arab hipster friend Ahmad would be doing if he lived in the middle east instead of Seattle.

E Talking – Soulwax

It’s so weird that these guys are brothers. Who likes hanging out with their brother THAT much?

If Ever I Feel Better, I’ll Go To The Disco (Buffalo Bunch, Pretty Tittty Re-edit) – Phoenix

Guy – Manuel’s (Daft Punk) brother made this remix. I chopped it up and rearranged it a little to make it better suited for a quick play.

I Love Club Music (Pretty Titty Re-edit) – Ms Thang

My wife’s favorite song ever. It’s also the perfect song to play after someone asks you to play more hip hop.

Feeling For You – Cassius

This song was huge at the Tunnel in like 1998. Haha! How do I know that?

Beeper – Sinden

I have a friend from Alabama who literally loses his mind every time this song comes on. They still use beepers in Alabama, that’s why I think.

Let’s Go Swimming – Arthur Russell

This whole mix started out for the Pool Party Tour that Chris Devlin, Ronnie Darko, & myself went on in May. We jumped the gun a little and only made it into one pool but other than the lack of swimmable water it was pretty amazing. We listened to a lot of Panda Bear, which strongly reminds me of that Arthur Russell record World of Echo which has the original Let’s Go Swimming on it. This is the Walter Gibbon’s mix.

No offense to the artists responsible for this mix. They make some amazing music, and yes, the FABRIC live mix CD was incredible (I still freak out every time I hear the mix of Daft Punk’s “Technologic” into Switch’s “A Bit Patchy”. However, this mix lacks everything a successful mix requires like flow, continuity, progression and direction. Very confusing. This mix represents everything that is wrong with the world of mixing with software like Torq and Ableton.

re: “However, this mix lacks everything a successful mix requires like flow, continuity, progression and direction. Very confusing. This mix represents everything that is wrong with the world of mixing with software like Torq and Ableton.”

Maybe you’re just not ready for this rapid-fire nu-collage of hidden gems and layered goodies that’s just as intelligently constructed as it is dance-able. Here’s where echoes of old-school and beyond play leapfrog with tomorrow’s head music. When you say “direction,” maybe you’re still stuck in your two-dimensional world view, Anonymous. Welcome to the hyper-linked short attention spans of two DJs who know what the funk is up. I actually enjoy all the non-continuous pauses where they allow you to catch your breath for a moment. There’s something really artificial about the plethora of perfectly seamless DJ mixes out there that “progress,” as they ignore the human element. Any lifeless, boring computer program can automatically match beats, but nobody can party down like us humans.
