Mixin’ It Up: mike ill

This weeks Mixin’ It Up is from LA’s mike ill (http://keepinitright.com/). It’s got a nice soulful feel to it. Over to mike ill:
“Hi. My name is Mike, and I’m an alcoholic. I did this mix in one take and I was drunk. That’s my imaginary excuse for my jacked up equipment and some loose blends. Whatever. I’ll just leave it at that. However this selection is superbly excellent. Doing this set I picked the first three songs and then recorded it live. ‘Feeling’ was more important to me than technical skill in this case. Although both would be ideal. This mix has an old school sort of sound throughout most of it, yet you’ll notice from the track list that there are newer artists on it as well. I tried to bring together old heads and young kids on this, and I think it worked out well. I feel it is important in my life to bring people together. Kinda like a Star Trek convention. However I won’t bore you with that cheesy talk. That’s why I made sure this mix is fun. It’s like a happy machine one might say. In any case maybe I bit off a little more than I can chew with this attempt, but I guess I’ll leave that for you to decide. Now off we go. listen!
“Sunshower” by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band
A lot of people will recognize this song from the M.I.A. track, “Sunshowers.” It’s a great track from a disco sorta band which has been also sampled by other popular Hip Hop artists.
“Second Time Around” by Shalamar
“Second Time Around” popped up on my iTunes random mode and was the partial inspiration to this mix.
“Tenderoni (hidden album cut)” by Chromeo
This is where I sprinkle in some newness but keep an old sound. The first time I heard Chromeo I really loved the sound.
“Promise (Siik Remix)” by Ciara
Siik comes with some smoothass refixes so I had to include this. I played this song in my car constantly around this time last year.
“Fannypack Nu Nu Yeah Yeah Remix” by Krazy Fiesta/Jo-han & Erik HP
This song is SO fun.
“Saturday Love” by Cherelle & Alexander O’Neal
The first time I heard this song I was probably in the 8th grade and I heard it on a mixtape by DJ Icy Ice, who is one of the greatest pioneers in LA hip hop DJ history. No joke. Hearing that mix was the first time I ever felt that I wanted to DJ.
“Get Up (b.cause kashif home stretch edit)” by Ciara
I know I played a Ciara song already, but this just fit. I’m sure peeps who read Discobelle know how nice B.Cause comes with it on this edit.
“100%” by Chromeo
Once again, I really like Chromeo. I especially like the part of this song that goes, “Girl if it’s alright.” It reminds me of that Montell Jordan song, “Get It On Tonight.”
“Carribean Queen (No More Love On The Run)” by Billy Ocean
I’ve been holding onto the instrumental to this forever and have been waiting for just this opportunity to play it. Plus, there’s a saxophone on it. kind of like the previous Chromeo song so it fit. It also has this crazy sound like a tiger growling or something.
“I Love Only You” by The Popular Peoples Front
I don’t think there really is a need to explain how awesome this song is.
“Do It Any Way You Wanna” by People’s Choice
I played Popular Peoples Front prior so I figured why not play People’s Choice next. Plus this beat is so driving and the dude is telling me to do it any way I wanna.
“How Long” by Ace
This is a little bit of a change in the sound from this mix, and the beginning of a new section. The song is within the time period though. My uncles would love this one.
“Shake It To The Ground (Pistol Pete Remix)” by DJ Blaqstarr
My most favorite song to mix. I might even go so far as to say, my most favorite song to mix ever. So choice.
“Shopping On The Dancefloor (Krames Remix)” by Purple Crush
A 90s sound which I’m really feeling right now. Purple Crush has been kiltin’ the blogosphere.
“The Love That I Crave (Luvtek Edit)” The Blow vs Strategy Strata
Luvtek makes some dope edits with a sensibility that I’m really feeling. I also really like The Blow. My homie ‘Marks’ introduced me to The Blow.
“Beeper” by Sinden & Count of Monte Cristal
I’m sure Discobelle readers know this one.
“Yeah Yeah (Flosstradamus Remix)” by Matt & Kim
The last song had a bass kick that reminded me of this song. Plus I have some friends who like this song so I wanted to play it for them. Hey guys.
“Shawty Is A Ten (Mano Remix)” The Dream x Mano
I found this song on Discobelle! This track is SO dope. The choppiness isn’t overwhleming. Sometimes I feel like too many effects ruin a song, but this is done really well. The changes are dope too. Mano’s got skill.
“My Beau” by Daedelus
A whimsical take on a old favorite.
The end. Thanks for reading and thanks Discobelle!”

This mix is really, really sloppy.
November 2nd, 2007 at 14:18
I rather like it actually.
November 2nd, 2007 at 14:32
i agree, i think it’s sloppy and frankly over-explained.
i appreciate you wanting to get your thing and your thoughts out there, but great music, mixes, remixes, edits, whatever should speak for themselves. and this sort of sound could be done better and tighter and freakier.
November 2nd, 2007 at 17:50
johnny silver, i agree. i actually despise explaining song selections. i hate them i hate them! but that’s what discobelle asked for. it’s part of their ‘mixin it up’ series you’ll notice.
November 2nd, 2007 at 18:02
i kinda like it too. just enough old stuff to keep me hanging on through the new stuff.
November 2nd, 2007 at 18:10
too good! “sunshower” is my shit. haven’t heard that in a minute. note a popular ghostface sample in that song…
November 2nd, 2007 at 18:13
johnny silver needs to get in the HAPPY MACHINE!!!
November 2nd, 2007 at 18:30

johnny’s comments need a little bit of polish
November 2nd, 2007 at 18:58
What’s up with LA DJ’s not knowing how to DJ?
Green headphones anyone…
November 2nd, 2007 at 19:16
I love the happy up beat music theme going on here.
November 2nd, 2007 at 19:28
Not bad, but not good. Song selection builds up to truly get jumpin, but the breakdown of the mix and beat count needz some work. I would’ve liked to hear some cleaner intros. I would also like to hear a more polished version.
November 2nd, 2007 at 20:12
what’s up with new yorkers not knowing about what’s going on west of the Hudson River unless it’s on pitchfork

this is a great mix and something i’m going to listen to over and over again. the “feeling” i get is fantastic. thanks for sharing, mike.
November 3rd, 2007 at 08:30
i’m feelin this mix. i don’t care what the haters say!! mike, you kick ass.
November 3rd, 2007 at 14:31
Good song selection but you should try mixmeister or abelton to mix if your not going to use headphones.
November 3rd, 2007 at 18:20
Trainwrecks all over the place. And to the person who said sloppy remixes is the new black is either a microwave dj or a bystander. And to make an excuse for your bad mixes on your bad equipment or being drunk? pathetic. This was a waste of time.
November 3rd, 2007 at 23:03
la djs fucking suck
everyone knows its nothing new !
come on green headphones dawg
green headphones.
November 4th, 2007 at 02:50
i really don’t know what the beef is with la djs. just off the top of my head, i can think of a number of really awesome la djs who kill it on the tables. who are you anyway, switchlo and nyc booking dept? it’s easy to talk shit behind your anonymity. and is that ‘green headphone’ thing supposed to be funny? what the hell does that mean anyway? you’re stupid. besides… your mom liked the mix. and jo, you’re totally exaggerating.
November 4th, 2007 at 02:54
Nice selection
November 4th, 2007 at 03:00
Yea they’re just hating. These suckas are ruthless. I liked the mix.
November 4th, 2007 at 10:29
cool mix mike. fuck all those haters, keep making your music.
November 5th, 2007 at 02:24
Jesus wept. NOBODY is hating. Some people are publicly criticising a public offering, and giving their reasons, and nobody is being a dick about it.
I come from a tradition and an aesthetic of DJing and creativity where you always try to do the absolute best you can do, and you don’t make excuses (unless it is something totally beyond your control). Mike, you know this could be done better. Do it better. Don’t make it good. Make it AMAZING.
November 5th, 2007 at 04:24
get your face out of Diplo’s lap
November 5th, 2007 at 04:32
“I come from a tradition and an aesthetic of DJing and creativity…”
Dude, Johnny not to be the f’ing grammer police but stringing a bunch of words together that sound artistic in a mega run on sentence also doesn’t cut it.
I think you’re trying to make a point about putting your best foot forward, but your poor sentence structure makes me a little unsure…
November 5th, 2007 at 06:17
people be hatin’ just bc it doesnt sound like an 80’s arcade and shit. you guys need to get your ass out of the bleeps and bloops phase and listen up! it is what it is and its good! beaudicoup!
November 5th, 2007 at 08:23
hey johnny silver. i never said YOU were hating. (unless you’re going under different names on this thread?) however there are some haters here. doesn’t matter though. i’m over it. in any case, thanks for the input.
