Gentlemen Drivers

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Easter is upon us but we here at Discobelle aren’t really that interested in eating eggs, lamb or candy. Instead, we’ll most likely go out partying. Tonight is the sixth edition of the club night Pastell here in Malmö and they managed to lure Parisian electro producers/dj’s Gentlemen Drivers to chilly Sweden. Together with swedish electropop hope Gentle Touch, they’ll make us dance all night.

Gentlemen Drivers are Michael and Benoit, they’ve done smashing remixes for The Teenagers, Klaxons etc. This track “2042 LA Dreams” (yeah, we know that it’s been around but unfortunately we couldn’t get the new Gentlemen Drivers track since it’s not finished yet) does indeed sound like the electrodance soundtrack to a future Los Angeles, sunstroked yet a bit dark and dystopic.

Cut Copy - Far Away

As you may already know, we here at Discobelle are big fans of the new breed of bands coming out of Australia. Dancey electropop outfit Cut Copy is one of them and they’re dropping one of the most anticipated albums of 2008 with their sophomore CD “In Ghost Colours” (produced with Tim Goldsworthy of DFA fame, it will be released by Modular in Europe in late April/May but you Aussies can get it on Good Friday). We got our hands on (thanks again to the ever so lovely Naomi at Darling Department) one of the tracks from the album, “Far Away” is a lovely upbeat track that reminds us of the new wave bands of the 80’s but with a modern sound.

Boom! This just surfaced in the good old Discobelle mailbox. Electropopsters Hot Chip meets upcoming house/dancehall/bassline producer Toddla T who drops some serious heat with this frantic remix. Looks like Toddla T will be doing it big in 2008.

Philadelphyinz mega post

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

More great club stuff from The Philadelphyinz AKA Apt One and Skinny Friedman. We proudly present this mega post with some of their recent tracks/remixes. They’re about to embark on a tour next week and they’re also in the process of making us a Mixin’ It Up so be prepared. Here we go:

“We’ve been doing a party called Philadelphyinz in Philly for several years and a party in Brooklyn called “I Pirate New York.” We’ve known each other since way back in the day in Pittsburgh. (For those interested in how the name “Philadelphyinz” came to be, look here)

We spin roller skate music, rap about diamonds, 80’s jams about special ladies, futuristic dance music by dudes in tight pants, spiced out thug club tracks, Bell Biv Devoe and probably a bunch of hip-house. We also produce tracks that fall somewhere between all of those genres. We’re gonna be on tour this spring (which we are currently booking), our MySpace page will have all our tour information as it’s available.”

On to the tracks:

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Hey Discobelle readers - this is rick re:action from Redscroll Records in Wallingford, CT, USA. I’ve been a loyal reader of Discobelle for quite a while and an electronic music fan for much longer. I’ve done stints as Music Director and Program Director at a few local college stations (currently at WESU). I hope you enjoy my picks for you. It’s been a pleasure going through the incredible amount of tracks that have come through.

First up, Jupiters Heroes with what they self-describe (quite accurately) as “neo italo cosmic techno”:

JUPITERS HEROES - COMMODORE (zShare)

Burning up the clubs in the great white north (namely, Montreal and Toronto) comes a mix by Mofomatronix:

This next mix was a promotional mix for an event (with Shir Khan, Juiceboxxx, Dre Skull, Acid Girls, Fluokids, Krames, Egyptrixx, my!gay!husband!, DJ Orion, Iggy baby + Culnsweet djs) that happened this past weekend at SXSW. From this mix I can only assume it was a blast:

And finally nice and thick cut up house jam comes by way of Project Cyborg:

That was the first week of rick re:action’s We Got Mail. He will be back next week for another edition.
