Mixin’ It Up: Downtown

Friday and another installment in the Mixin’ It Up series. This time we go to Helsinki and DJ Downtown of the New Judas label. Let’s get going:

“One of the main guys behind the New Judas label, Downtown, is getting more and more busy. After his debut solo track release last April on a split vinyl with the Finnish partners in crime Top Billin, He’s been DJ-ing frequently both as a resident at his own club night NOW! alongside names such as Radioclit, Duke Dumont & Zombie Disco Squad and at festivals and venues in big cities all over Europe. Downtown as a producer is behind several projects ranging from the happy house of Pets On Prozac to the debut single of the mega hyped pop group Le Corpse Mince De Françoise. The newest project Renaissance Man with fellow Helsinki DJ Jaxxon has already created hype behind the scenes of the club world.

Download: Mixin It Up – Downtown (direct link)

1. Quintino – Rap Das Armas

Good stand out opener even though the vocal track is apparently like a war chant of the favela gangs. This Quintino version is the best i’ve heard so far.

2. Le Corps Mince De Françoise – Ray-Ban Glasses (Downtown Dub)

I produced the original track with Jonas the Limping Boy. It’s more downtempo and clubby so with the remix i wanted to do something more housy and chilled. The LCMDF (www.myspace.com/lecorpsmincedefrancoise) girls hold amazing talent and first and foremost a dear friends of mine. This one is out on New Judas next week!

3. Zombie Disco Squad – Vie

Love the blend of house and baile on this one. Zombie Disco Squad boys are great guys and great producers. Almost every set i play holds a track from them.

4. Daniel Mehlhart – Fata Morgana

Found this track quite recently. It’s one of the better and classier ones of the “etno house” boom. I seem to be really in to chants.

5. Eilmes Kohlberger – Tabasco (Andre Crom Remix)

Nat from ZDS played this on my night in Helsinki and i got totally hooked on to it. Has worked every time since. Great horn action.

6. Renaissance Man – Dumbo

Renaissance Man (www.myspace.com/renaissancemanmvsic) is a new project of mine together with my pal Jaxxon. This is supposed to be on the first release with the Spraycan track later on the mix. It’s coming out next spring on a label that most of u will probably know.

7. Late Of The Pier – Bathroom Gurgle (Tomski & Fredboy Remix)

Great original track and even greater remix by the boys of the Tartelet Records, one of my favorite labels.

8. Franky Rizardo – Flute Test

This young guy has put out few really amazing simple grooves.

9. Style of Eye – Clown

I really like the less deep side of Style of Eye production and specially this circus track.

10. Mixhell – Boom Da (Downtown Tom Jam Remix)

This is a remix i just finished for my Brazilian friends. I’ve been really in to toms lately and decided to to do a remix totally based on them.

11. Renaissance Man – Spraycan

This is the first track we ever made with Jaxxon. We’ve gotten massive support from friends we’ve sent it to. Forming in to a big track i hope. Simple idea around maybe the most used sound of the bmore and dancehall world sounds fresh on a more minimal environment.

12. Butch – Mushroom Man

Also a really straight forward track with some nice nintendo bleeps. good companion for Spraycan.

13. Laidback Luke – Generation Noise (Afrojack Remix)

Great tune. I love a lot of the Laidback Luke stuff and also the other big room house stuff from the swedish housemafia. The gliding bassline sampling the “Be” track is brilliant.

14. Mystery Jets – Two Doors Down (Duke Dumont Remix)

Perfect epic and beautiful ending for the mix. I think Duke is one of the best producers around, always full of surprises. I could have easily picked also the brilliant LOTP remix but I’ll save it for next time.”

Anonymous: Yeah, that was few months ago. I wouldn’t call most of the tracks on here blog house, some baile funk, some minimal, Laidback Luke is perhaps the closest. But you should listen to na and hey if you don’t like it that’s fine maybe you’ll like the next Mixin’ It Up.
