Jay Weed – On The Nile (BFlecha Remix)

Sinden’s Grizzly label has been in a frenzy of activity for 2011, currently showcasing a whopper of a release from Lyon born Jay Weed.

Jay Weed’s sound taps into similar vibes that folks like Mosca and Oneman have fostered throughout the “impossible-to-define-if-it’s-dubstep-or-not” genre, but this latest release is brimming with a kind of infectious dancefloor energy that blursg the lines between a collection of influences.

In a time where some “future garage” music seems to be a bit drained of energy and enthusiasm, it’s a pleasure to have a complex release that still makes you want to get on a table and pantomime the actions to Ginuwine’s “Pony”.

Here’s what label boss Sinden had to say on the release:

I caught wind of Jay’s stuff a year ago through Douster (who weighs in with a really cool egyptian banger on this EP). Impressed, we locked in the release. Leading track, On The Nile, operates on a grey area bass music tip that its really stripped back, funky and evocative. I love the Egyptian synth melodies in the breakdown reminding me of old Amstrad computer game, Oh Mummy or Egyptian lover meets the Cyber Pharoahs as Douster once said. I’ve had so many people ask me about this when I’ve played it out. The track really is a one of a kind, a real original – perfect Grizzly material.

City Staccs is a great fit as the second track and much like On The Nile really hard to place. It’s just as rhythmical, but more stoned (weeded?), subtle with plenty of low end. I love both of these. Jay’s definitely a producer with his own sound!

‘On The Nile’ is out now on Grizzly, grab it here!

midsummer-tale-500

Koyote – Midsummer Tales EP

“Midsummer Tales” is the name of Koyote’s ambitious first installment of a trilogy of EP’s he has set for release on one of my favorite imprints over the last few years, Mixpak Records. Meticulously crafted on hardware synths and drum machines, Koyote pushes beyond his booty/ghetto-tech roots, tapping into a wide ranging set of influences, from Deep Purple to Kenny Larkin.

Packed with inventive analog rhythmic gymnastics, this EP looks back to the glory days of intelligent techno for inspiration but takes the sound further. The term “psychedelic body music” has been thrown around to describe a new breed of producers making tripped out analog music that you can actually dance to. “Midsummer Tales” extrapolates on this idea: it is a record that works both on the dancefloor and the motorway.

Composed during a road-trip around the south of France, this EP is the soundtrack to Koyote’s gallic adventure: overnight trains, August heatwaves, the whir of crickets and napping under bamboo trees. Join him.

Available now from iTunes, Beatport, and Juno.

We’ve also got an exclusive track that’s not on the EP, but one that still conjures up visions of a campfire next to a stream where a bunch of woodland creatures emerge and start shaking their junk.

Koyote – Dragonfly Frenzy

For more summer nostalgia, check out the hugely underrated video for Mixpak boss Dre Skull’s remix of “Wellness is Wild” by Goon & Koyote, and watch Mixpak for an absolutely gigantic Vybz Kartel collaboration album coming up in the near future. You can read an interview with Dre Skull at Soundclash where he talks in detail about the collaboration.

koreless

Koreless – Maria

Versatile is a term that maybe gets overused these days, but Glasgow based Koreless is exactly that. Evoking the emotional side of Ramadanman and the mechanical side of James Blake, his debut EP is a sophisticated cut of cleanliness and micro melodies sparking off one another, working around organic instrumentation and lonely vocals.

“Maria” is available as a free digital download to help promote the “4D / MTI” single, and it builds a wispy harmony up into a full bodied piano song accompanied by a stuttering two step beat floating overhead.

You can also listen to his excellent jazz(ish) mix for The Daily Street and download his recent Jaques Greene remix if you somehow missed it.

The “4D / MTI” EP is available now on both 12-inch vinyl and as digital download. The vinyl is hand-stamped, numbered and part of a limited run of 300 copies.

grooove

Addison Groove- ‘It’s Got Me / Minutes of Funk’

Aside from singlehandedly making the term “Footcrab” something that’s yelled on dancefloors and oft-repeated on message boards, Addison Groove is also responsible for a momentous new release on Martyn’s 3024 label that sounds equally as unhinged as his past work, but with a bit more finesse.

‘It’s Got Me’ feels like what plays on the inside of your eyelids after a concussion – twinkling drums and chopped voices hover overtop a bleepy synth line. Meanwhile, ‘Minutes Of Funk’ is a track that shuffles and jukes around the recognizable refrain of its predecessor and employs some deadly accurate 808 hits amongst pounding toms that leave you feeling frazzled and energized at the same time.

Preview the release below, and remember that both this release and Julio Bashmore’s upcoming “Grand National” EP are both going to be getting gorgeous vinyl releases, so save up your $$$.
