In Flagranti – Worse For Wear (video)

In Flagranti have their aesthetic down so well that hearing their music conjures up a visual image of a dirty malt liquor stained Brooklyn sidewalk outside the Meat Packing District in the early 80s. It feels like a homage to New York back when your parents were in nightclubs that had mirrors on the ceiling and DJs who talked to the crowd in between songs.

Now, Sasa Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor are following up on 2006′s “Wronger Than Anyone Else” and 2009′s vintage porn-chic idolizing “Brash & Vulgar” with “Worse for Wear.”

“Flea markets and recycling parts of our production are really at the center of this album,” says Crnobrnja. “I like things to be old and run-down,” added Alex Gloor, who still resides in Basel. “So I let myself be inspired by one of my favorite places to spend time: 1970s- 80s New York City.”

Preview all the tracks from the album above, an abundance of gritty basslines and degenerative dance music moments.

Para One & Tacteel Live at La Gaîté Lyrique

Para One & Tacteel are weaving some serious magic here, because their performance somehow makes a forty minute live disco set at Parisian festival Gaîté Lyrique look and feel deceptively effortless.

Recreating it all from behind a mountain of synthesizers, we get to hear everything from live versions of unreleased material to a jaw dropping performance of Bo’Tox’s “Blue Steel.”

You can stream the full video of their performance above- for anyone interested in live dance music, this is a must watch.

Kavsrave vs. Joy O – Untightled

Even though we’re all gutted that newly renamed Joy O recently dropped the “rbison” from his name, life must go on. Whether it was for fear of copyright infringement or not (this Doldrums Records tweet seems to suggest that the name change wasn’t his choice), I’m all for whatever alias Peter O’Grady wants to go by if his new tracks keep sounding this good.

“Untightled” begins sounding very precise and controlled, piano sweeps and percussion clicking like Joy O and cohort Kavsrave are holding something back. But after everything quiets down suddenly for some incomprehensible dancehall vocals, the track grows more and more unhinged, branching out into different driections and then surging back together.

It’s tactful and uninhibited at the same time, and clocking in at just over five minutes it feels like it could’ve gone for another ten without exhausting the vibe. Regardless, Joy O or Joy Orbison, we’ll take what we can get.

Prince Club – I Know

For me it’s a video game. You know how people are obsessed with Starcraft and World of Warcraft? How people die from playing too long? For me, that’s producing.

– Max Antoine-Poulin of Prince Club

Prince Club’s output of free music in 2011 alone has been pretty substantial, giving away some classically seasoned, fall-off-the-bone house music cuts for free and then offering up a new EP on Riva Starr’s Snatch! label with three original productions that show a startling amount of promise.

Now we’ve got a previously unreleased, recently remastered track that’s yours in return for signing up on the Snatch! mailing list. Feel good classical piano stabs and a castanets laced upbeat tempo make it feel like the perfect choice for a summer festival, or a yacht trip around the outskirts of the Pacific.

Joyce Muniz – Carnaval Mixtape 2011

Like Humphrey Bogart said in a classic movie: I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship…

Joyce Muniz provided us with an amazing Carnival mixtape last year and the Carnival season is upon us once again so we continue the tradition but this time we get the classics. Take it away Joyce!

“Another year passed, back again in cold freezing Vienna while my friends in Brasil already prepare for Carnival. I do get a lot of inspriation from listening to traditional Brasilian Music. Therefore, the next installment for my Carnival mixtape for Discobelle focusses more on the old Brasil stuff. I was lucky enough to spend my entire last 3 days with this mix listening to tons of old Brasil Vinyl records putting them all back into my latop. This is not only Tropical – this here is the original Brasil shit!!”
