The Heatwave – Energy Bashment

The Heatwave’s dancehall filled mixes have helped me do things I never thought possible – staying up 59 consecutive hours working on a ten foot tall tornado replica for a Canadian museum while solely listening to Heatwave mixes, for example.

Maybe it’s because they excel at seamlessly blending dancehall refixes of pop staples, or maybe it has something to do with their effortless bridging of Jamacian produced vibes with a UK bashment tinged edge.

Whatever it is that’s responsible for the magic they’ve been weaving in their mixes, it comes out in full force here – brimming with exclusives from Vybz Kartel, a new Sticky & Ms. Dynamite collaboration, and a multitude of tropical riddims to give spring the final needed push to just become summer already.

Jai Paul – BTSTU

Kicking off with a whispered falsetto muttering “don’t fuck with me, don’t fuck with me”, Jai Paul’s clicks-and-glitches-clunky-yet-elegant-bass-pop track “BTSTU” actually surfaced back in 2010 as a work in progress demo.

However, it’s recently been revealed that Jai Paul’s material is going to be making a debut on XL Recordings (one of the few labels these days that’s doing definitively better than “just keeping afloat). Considering XL’s output of excellence in the past two decades, we’re eagerly awaiting more material from this twitchy ballad writer with the Ma$e comeback style braggadocio lyrics.

Can’t wait for this to drop, serious vibes courtesy of Spooky and Mosca.

“Mosca gets his dubby hands on one of last year’s biggest grime tunes, Spooky’s ‘Spartan’. Some serious cross-genre niceness, with Mosca really dipping confidently into the dub tradition – A LOT of reverb, plenty of samples and a sufficiently deep bassline, reminding us that the two genres definitely do have a whole bunch in common.” (Via Mixpak)
