Gilles Peterson Remix Contest

We here at Discobelle have teamed up with Havana Cultura to bring you a Gilles Peterson remix contest where the grand prize is a trip for two to Havanna + tickets to the Rotilla Electronic Music Festival. Alright, here are the details:

“In October 2009, Havana Cultura and DJ Gilles Peterson collaborated to create a double album of modern Cuban music called Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound. Then, June 2010 saw the launch of a remix of the original album, Gilles Peterson Presents: Havana Cultura Remixed. Peterson, an early proponent of the new Cuban sound, personally commissioned some of the world’s biggest DJs to participate on the album, including Carl Cox, Louie Vega of Masters at Work, Solal of Gotan project, MJ Cole, and Cuban DJs Wichy de Vedado and Edgaro. The result was something extraordinary—an infectious marriage of both old and new that perfectly showcases the energy and ambiance of modern Havana. Now, we would like to take modern Cuban music out of the studio and put it back in the hands of the people. Brainchild of Havana Cultura and the world-renowned Gilles Peterson, the Gilles Peterson Remix Contest is an online contest that gives aspiring DJs and music enthusiasts the opportunity to bring today’s Cuban sounds into the spotlight of dance music.

The rules are simple: just go to Havana Club’s Facebook page and become a fan. From there you can download one of two original tracks. Then, it’s up to you! You’ll have one month (April 1-29) to craft the most innovative, interesting and dance-worthy remix possible. After, add your remix to the GP Remix Contest drop box on Soundcloud.com and watch for the results released every week.

Each week for one month Gilles Peterson will judge the submitted remixes alongside some of the dance music scene’s most popular bloggers. After choosing their favorites, the 10 final favorite tracks will be featured on a Havana Cultura online compilation album. Best of all, the grand prize winner will win a trip for two to Havana, Cuba and tickets to the Rotilla Festival for Electronic Music!

Noob – April Mix For Discobelle

Hard to believe that this April marks Noob’s first independent solo release on Popof founded label Form Music. After all, we’ve been listening to remix ‘pon remix from the French native, from the WMC touted “Dinosaurs With Guns” collaboration to remixes of everyone from Proxy to style of Eye and Tiga.

And then there was that moment in 2009 that found Noob releasing the mindworm known as “Peanuts Club” with Brodinski, a twerky “techno circus from hell” themesong that was stuck in the brains of dancefloor citizens everywhere (whether they wanted it to be or not). Oh god, and then the video…

Now the Crumble EP comes with four startlingly good original productions a Para One / Teki Latex collaboration coming straight out of the depths of vocoder hell, maybe Teki’s “Ibiza breakthrough moment” or perhaps not quite yet (but even if it’s not, it’s excellent).

Dubbel Dutch rolls through with a free edit of Dexplicit’s tune “Bullacake” (named after the delicious Jamacian molasses, ginger and nutmeg spiced delicacy) that employs strings, pitched vocals and the sound of bullet casings hitting the ground to absolutely deadly effect.

Speaking of Dubbel Dutch, his 12″ of white label re-edits will be coming out on Dutty Artz soon, featuring reworkings of Deborah Cox, R. Kelly, Ciara, Harddrive, and two original tracks. Pre-order it at Crosstalk, it’s absolutely not to be missed.
