Round Table Knights- Remixes EP

Two reasons to lust after the new Round Table Knights remix EP:

1) Limited 300 copy 12″ vinyl pressing looking so crispy.
2) Erm, the music on afformentioned beautiful EP.

For example, L-Vis 1990 & The Neon Dreams ascend “Paparussi” to a previously unattainable level of vibes, and adding Javeon McCarthy’s fantastic vocals to the track is a brilliant decision that makes it sound immediately more organic and intimate.

Calling them the new Fleetwood Mac of the dance music world may be misinterpreted as an insult, but it’s anything but: the professionalism of recording quality (presumably Cubic Zirconia’s Nick Hook at work) and the pacing of the track never falters as it grows to a shimmeringly bright climax, and the final product feels polished and exciting in a way that few other releases lately have been able to achieve.

Comparatively, Mercury and Homework have a lot to live up to with their renditions of “Say What?!” – but both bring something special to the plate. Mercury adds on some soft diva humming under their escalating and falling house stabs, and Homework forgoes the vocals altogether, twisting the track into something unrecognizably different, but catchily enough that it doesn’t even matter.

Out on Made To Play later this month.

Jon Convex – Convexations EP

Everytime a new Martyn-curated 3024 release pops up, you know it’s time to pay attention.

This is definitely true for Damon Kirkham’s return to the label after giving some backup vocal chops for Marty’s ‘Natural Selection’ release back in 2008. Since then, Kirkham’s been keeping himself busy as half of the warehouse wrecking Instra:mental, and now his new release from 3024 comes under a different moniker; Jon Convex.

‘Falling Again’ is the most immediately striking cut from the EP from a dancefloor perspective. 2-step rhythm, spliced vocals, and an addictive organic bassline takes its time coursing around the veins of the production, not forcing you to dance, but instead, asking if you think you’re up for it.

‘Convexations’ sounds like someone’s flushing a bunch of paint down the drain, a swirling mix of Yamaha fog and gibberish dialogue. And only on the digital version will you find ‘Order Into Chaos’ – a shame it won’t be included on the EP because it’s pure warehouse material, the kind of thing that would be great to pull out of your record bag when you want to show off to friends at how much distorted bass your soundsystem can withstand.

Similar to Julio Bashmore’s recent 3024 release, I love the way that the label is pushing the limits of weirdness while still keeping to a sound that’s moderately accessible, if you’re not afraid of looking a bit spastic on the dancefloor that is.

SBTRKT

SBTRKT – Wildfire

Geeeez. SBTRKT, what have we done to deserve this?! There’s something fantastic about the new single from everyone’s favorite Kaonashi mask wearing dub warrior that makes it somewhat difficult to believe that it’s being offered up for free.

Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon pitches some appropriately shrill firey vocals over the wobbling, cascading beat of SBTRKT’s tune, a matchup that is right up there quality wise with baby faced, angelic voiced Sampha’s previous collaborations, as well as Jessie Ware’s honest soulfulness.

The very thought that all these collaborations and more are finally going to be housed on SBTRKT’s Young Turks released, self-titled LP fills me with a lot of hope for dance music this summer.

Zomby – Things Fall Apart ft. Panda Bear

Though a recent Fader interview shows that Zomby’s recent proclivities have been leaning towards drum machines, 808s, hip hop and soul, this collaboration is both a departure from the old jungle rave vibe of older Zomby tracks.

Darkly affecting, Noah Lennox chips in with his light as a feather vocals, which sound a lot more organic than Zomby’s work on Martyn’s “Hear Me” track. There are traces of dubby air horns sprinkled throughout and a clacking gun shot in between the echoing synth.

One thing that also seems to be consistent is Zomby’s weed intake – some things never change.

In preparation for tomorrow’s party with Total Freedom and NGUZUNGUZU, Kingdom flips Alexis Taylor’s soulful crooning into a pitched chipmunk diva noise on this re-edit of Win Win’s “Interleave”. Spaced out bliss for a late night out.

Voltron – Don’t Stop

Voltron’s “Freshmen” EP on Discobelle Records has been gathering a lot of praise from both DJs and dancefloors worldwide, and is now sitting on the Juno UK Funky/UK Garage/2 Step Garage bestselling chart. Kind of not surprising, considering that it’s stuffed to the seams with a series of blazing and polished “UK-garage-meets-soulful-house-in-the-bathroom-of-a-rave” productions.

Take “Don’t Stop” for example, which could popularize the term “sophistigarage” with its piercing, darting percussive strength. Employing some bashy drums around the edges of chopped stuttering vocals and echoing xylophone vibes, it feels and sounds like part of the feverish dreams of a hungover diva on a Sunday afternoon in New York.

Voltron – Don’t Stop (Original Mix)

Grab it on Juno for remixes from Ultravid, XXXY, NGUZUNGUZU, J. Dixon, and The Phantom, as well as the flip side track “Be For Real”.
