DJ MikeQ – Let It All Out Mix + Interview on Ballroom For Network Awesome

Continuing in their tradition of excellently curated video content, Network Awesome is hosting the absolutely classic “Paris Is Burning” documentary, chronicling New York’s vogue scene in the late 80s. While paying homage to the scene that influenced an unimaginable amount of the music we enjoy today, they’ve also gone the extra mile and hosted an interview with East Coast superstar DJ MikeQ, who’s at the forefront of some fantastic new ballroom productions in New Jersey and New York these days.

MikeQ describes as ballroom as “weird, cunty, sometimes hard-hitting, dramatic, repetitious, half club/half house beats”, and that’s just scratching the surface. Watch the Paris Is Burning documentary if you haven’t already, and then read on for some insight into ballroom history from MikeQ.

MikeQ has also put together a fantastic mix of ballroom beats that you can grab from Network Awesome, scroll down after the interview to download the mix.

Disco Of Doom – Invader EP

The latest release on Discobelle Records is out today and comes from UK techno duo Disco Of Doom with the massive “Invader EP”.

Disco Of Doom – Invader EP – Discobelle Records by discoofdoom

Techno afficianados Disco of Doom have gifted us with a release of dark and otherworldly tech house that’s both a series of polished and efficient club anthems as much as it a hectic, unhinged portrait of the back alleys of clubs and plagues of the not-too-distant future.

“Invader” starts off the package with a bang, sounding like Zombie Nation driving a rickety Sedan into a lamp post and then stumbling down an empty street at midnight with a broken arm. With a bit of an acid house tinge laced in around its rougher edges, it’s tech-house meets weird-house meets a burning down house in the middle of the suburbs.

Arveene & Misk’s rework of “Invader” sounds like the inside of that burning house, electronics short circuiting and the smoke alarm sending out a perfectly pitched screaming synth warning while smoke fills up everything in front of you. Pitching the vocals up and down while a barrage of wheezing, hazy chords race overtop, it’s destined for big things.

“Doomsday” is filled with schizophrenic stuttering vocal samples, crashing cymbal kicks and squelchy synth stabs that are perching on the cusp of spilling out of the speakers and congealing in a sludgy dark pile in the corner of the club.

Continuing his year of exceptional work, Bowski produces another perfect jam, smoothing out some of the rougher edges and distilling “Doomsday” to its humid essence with a riff that spirals and oscillates around the vocals while a percussive woodblock keeps time above everything. It feels like you’re ascending out of hell on a slightly malfunctioning escalator, dreamy and unsettling at the same time.

“Space 2.0″ is a song about one of those times when you’re wearing sunglasses because anything in daylight feels like it’s going to scorch your retinas straight off your eyeballs..

Finally, “Alice Cooper” likely refers to the period in his career before he started golfing, back when face paint, boa constrictors crawling around your shoulders and a stage show featuring (fake?) public executions were the defining points of Cooper’s character. The track embodies a resurrection of that early 70’s druggy territory, filtered through a satanically possessed MPC. Mason’s “School’s Out” rework may cash in on the cheap thrills of the track’s title, but certainly keeps the vibe of the original pulsating with its echoing drums gaining momentum as they wind through the track.”

You can grab the Arveene & Misk remix over on the Disco Of Doom Facebook page in exchange for a “like”.

Joe – Twice

Hessle Audio’s release of first ever compilation “116 & Rising” has been making a lot of mouths froth for good reason. James Blake returns to making “dance music” ? Untold pens a track called “Cool Story Bro” (maybe inspired by 4chan)? It’s being released as a triple vinyl?

But the reason I’m feeling most excited about this compilation is an inclusion from North London based Joe, whose past two EPs on Hessle have been accompanied by a veil of anonymity – no press pictures, no hyped up promotion, and as a rare interview he conducted with The Quietus outlines, not really much of a release schedule planned out either.

Joe’s last release on Hessle Audio (Claptrap / Level Crossing) showcased a deadly effective use of minimalist production: the use of a kick drum, handclaps and sparse muttering and coughing in the background, and not much else. It’s influence can still be seen tracing its way around the globe- most recently, I saw it weaved into the sets of popular Japanese DJs Dexpistols.

In contrast to the lo-fi beats , Joe’s new production seems orchestral. Even though he hasn’t ditched his typewriter-esque percussion that forms the base of the track, now we have some swelling synth in the background, and a sample of Don Cheadle trying to sell a TK-421 soundsystem from “Boogie Nights”.

After Cheadle’s assertion “oh, I think you need all that bass, if you want a system to handle what you want”, the song hits its full addictive peak, tossing in a piano line that will firmly attach itself to the inside of your brain.

Funny story about that sample -the soundsystem that Cheadle talks about, TK-421, is actually named after a stormtrooper from the original Star Wars movie, and has been used as a recurring pop culture easter egg over the past 30 odd years. Consider Joe’s track the evolution of that meme, maybe? Or if not, maybe just a blissful slice of percussion from an immensely promising producer.

I Break Horses – Hearts

I Break Horses – Hearts from Bella Union on Vimeo.

Here’s some perfect spring fare from Stockholm’s I Break Horses. Static filled shoegaze dance pop for driving across the country early in the morning, and maybe for driving across the country all night once the Tom Rowlands (of Chemical Brothers) remix follows soon.
