This Is Head – De Trop (Johanna Knutsson Cosmic Support remix)

The latest single from Swedish krautdisco warriors This Is Head is called “De Trop” (the original version was released on a single by Adrian Recordings back in May). Now we get a sublime, slow chugging and almost balearic sounding 9 minute remix from Malmö turned Berliner dj/producer Johanna Knutsson, during the recent year she has risen from local to internationally renowned with the aid of a neverending line of amazing dj-sets, remixes, edits and her other work over at Berlin techhouse label Klasse Recordings.

“It’s Saturday night and you go to bed at 23:00. You set your alarm clock on 05:00. You go up and have a couple of beers for breakfast and then you’re ready for the floor. You arrive at Berghain, Panorama bar, Berlin at 06:00 and most likely you will find Johanna Knutsson at the DJ booth, maybe she even has her whole label with her and what you have stumbled upon is a Klasse Recordings label party. Johanna is the latest star on the more mellow techno scene of Berlin. The scene that peaks at 07:00 when the party re-starts.”

Schlachthofbronx (ft. Gnucci Banana) – Coolie Fruit

Munich based partystarters Schlachthofbronx drop their second EP on Man Recordings, it’s entitled “Carimbo” and the four tracks are all huge! Gnucci Banana jumps in on the wicked track “Coolie Fruit” where she among other things raps about mangoes, sweet tea and soup over some next level bassy tropical flavour.

Marvin’s Room (DJ Dodger Stadium Edit)

When Drake calls out “I’m just sayin’, you could do better” on the crooning chorus of “Marvin’s Room”, most would assume that it’s directed at an ex lover who he happens to be drunk dialing from the club in a rare moment of existentially charged drunken loneliness.

But perhaps Samo Sound Boy and Jerome from LOL Boys (who together make up DJ Dodger Stadium) heard something else in those lines, maybe a call to revise the track into something even more emotionally resonant while adding some swelling club friendly drum patterns and pitching up the vocals to a chipmunk-on-helium level?

No way to be sure, but this track precedes the launch of Body High’s first EP – the new label that Samo & Jerome founded in an attempt to give a voice to underground dance music in the US. Definitely worth exposing yourself to is XLR8R’s recent interview with Samo Sound Boy where he talks about the positioning of the new label, saying:

“There’s something going on in the States, and it is really changing and getting better. [Body High] is our piece of the puzzle… We don’t exactly know what we’re doing right now, but people are willing to help, and it’s coming together”

Drake – Marvin’s Room (DJ Dodger Stadium Edit)

The first DJ Dodger Stadium EP is out Oct. 4th on Body High.

TEED

TEED – Garden (Joe Goddard, Hackman & Donaeo Remixes)

This stunning batch of remixes for Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’ latest single “Garden”, (which actually got the re-rub treatment back on Play It Down almost a year ago now) brings together two big names who put a unique touch on things.

Donaeo drags the track through a metal processing plant on the edge of town, running a buzzsaw in between the vocals and dropping a big UK Funky bassline that jars the original’s placated duet.

Hackman goes the opposite route, and provides a subdued mix of the original track that rolls along on some atmospheric bleeps & twinkling, letting the vocals breathe and take control of the ambience of the track, especially when they’re twisted into a foreign mantra completely different from the original halfway through.

Finally, Joe Goddard is still riding high on the same magic dust that spawned the recent “Gabriel” track on Greco Roman, with a remix that throws on some wobbly synth actions that leave the vocals largely untouched but bend and warp the original melody like a piece of vinyl that’s been locked in a sauna overnight and then played out the next morning. Fortunately, it sounds much better than actually doing that in real life would.

Garden remixes drop on Oct. 16th on Greco-Roman.

Bonjay Mix for Sub|Div

Canada’s riddim renaissance team Bonjay have given us an abundance of good things in the past year – in addition to live sets that absolutely rupture the presumed divide between genres of r&b, dancehall, electroclash, indie and bass music, they’ve given us last autumn’s debut EP “Broughtupsy” and a unique single released on UK imprint One Bird Records that was a limited-edition handcrafted notebook with a USB stick containing the tracks inside.

Now they’ve provided a deeply satisfying mix for British Columbia’s Sub|Div bass movement, as well as a thoughtful explanation of the tracks.

Read on from Bonjay:

“In recent months, a lot of the best new dance music has reminded us of turn-of-the century BET gems – the futuristic R&B, dancehall, and rap that ruled urban radio from the mid-90s through mid-00s. It was a producer-led era, ruled by those who paired tough, syncopated drums with glossy soul hooks. The kings – like Timbaland, Lenky, The Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Black Chiney, and Just Blaze – were hired guns who added one or two slugs of their sound to dozens of albums and film soundtracks every year.

We’ve been listening to a lot of this stuff – old and new – while we work on our forthcoming album. In our music, these sonics are filtered through a lot of other influences and come out much less targeted at the dance. But while we don’t make strictly hype tunes, we love DJing and listening to the new stuff. Especially the ones that add fresh ideas to take these sounds to new places. So we put together a mix of our favourites.

You’ll hear tracks that conjure up specific Hype Williams videos alongside much more oblique references to the likes of “What’s Your Fantasy” and “Get Ur Freak On”. Some of the artists featured here stick to leftfield sounds, while others are inspiring Toronto cheerleaders to perform halftime dance routines. There’s no city or region that serves as a focal point – it’s a pretty even split between UK and North American producers. The common thread is that these tunes haven’t coalesced into a scene or a sound – their future lies ahead.

While it’s too early to call a revival, if you think about it these sonics are ripe for re-discovery and reinvention. North American rap and R&B don’t share the culture of UK music, where everyone joins in at the same tempo once a new sound is invented. So unlike some dance music revivals, there’s a lot of new ground to be broken – the rhythmic ideas here aren’t yet in danger of being burned out by thousands of copycat tunes. And if producers continue to stretch out like this, that won’t happen for a long time.”

Viadrina – Bodymind EP

Even though Viadrina sounds like a prescription drug for sale on the streets of Bangkok, the Polish duo Konrad & Mateusz have formed a much more potent intoxicant than any black market opiate can offer. Their debut EP on Catz N Dogz owned label Pets Recordings was received with open arms by dancefloors of the world at the beginning of 2011, and now Viadrina continues to hone their craft on the Discobelle Records released “Bodymind” EP – a synthesis of lofty reverberating tech house and sweaty, dancefloor tested pure body jacking jams. Released today so go grab it at your favorite digital music retailer!

Some chopped up howls and supernatural noises float atop scaling synths start off the dancefloor anxiety-inducing kick drum heavy “Out There”. An ominous vocal cut whispering conspiracy theories about strange stuff in the dark? Check. Slowly emerging funky baseline that feels like it’s sitting in the bottom of your gut? Check. Roller coaster style buildups hovering at the top of the roof of the club in suspended animation before dropping back into a dizzying percussion laden climax? Yes, absolutely.

Meanwhile “Night Drug” feels like it could be part of the Strictly Rhythm catalogue anywhere from 1990 – 1994; pumping rhythm and thick lust funk in full effect, a love letter to strobe light illuminated nights and the dress code from the nightclub scene in “Basic Instinct”. Quick moving synth lines dart and stab around sultry dragged out diva vocals, and everything culminates in a blindingly bright stomp-and-shake inducing finale.

“Bodymind” kicks off with rollicking tin can percussion and misty synth lines emitting a woozy infectiousness that make you feel like maybe you just bought the bar but can’t remember. The warped vocal sample shifts from murkily unrecognizable to front and present dance instigator, immersing the track in a hazy euphoric swamp of r&b moaning and groaning. It’s tearing a page out of Blawan’s recent playbook reminiscent of “Getting Me Down”, but a little bit dirtier content wise. Is the sample R. Kelly? The Isley Brothers pitched down to the seventh layer of hell? That’s for you to figure out.
