Brenmar By Antwan D. 1

Ralphi Rosario – You Used 2 Hold Me (Brenmar Remix)

Something feels unmistakably sincere about the music Brenmar touches – whether in the sample laden edits of overlooked classics like Cassie’s “Me & U” or original tracks that showcase a deep affection for HipHop, RnB, Bass, House, Juke and the aesthetics of the club, there’s almost always a sense that Chicago’s Bill Salas is making music that he himself would jump around to with hands thrown in the air if it came on in the club.

Releasing a new track every time he hits a new 1000 followers on twitter, Brenmar just dropped the latest one, a 2011 update to Ralphi Rosario’s classic house track. Definitely for the clubs and accompanying DJs, it’s the kind of thing that will evoke nostalgia and make you want to design some futuristic two-step cooking dance synthesizing moves at the same time too.

Omar-S – It Can Be Done, But Only I Can Do It

Even though “It Can Be Done, But Only I Can Do It” is the first LP from Alex Omar Smith since 2005, it would be a blatant lie to call Omar-S unproductive. His Detroit-based imprint FXHE Records has been unleashing a near constant barrage of classic material over the past few years, everything from 12″ records to blank CDs filled with mixes from the early 2000s to… um… ice cube trays. Even more impressive is that the album was released less than a week on the heels of a free Scion collaborative project that paired him with Theo Parrish. Fortunately, when it comes to classic Detroit techno and house, there’s no such thing as a point of oversaturation.

“It Can Be Done” is a eclectic but controlled mixture of new material and some of the previously vinyl only releases, like a mishmash of house, techno and downtempo beats, but really calling it a mishmash makes it sound unplanned or thrown together in some way. Instead, it feels like a culmination of several years of progress coming together to form a cohesive sound.

Kicking off with “Solely Supported” from last October’s “These Complimentary Tracks” EP, you’ve got a slow burner combining trace elements of acid house with an infectious drum kick that takes its time coming to the front of the track.

Meanwhile, “Look Hear Watch” is the most NSFW dance music track of the year, or, maybe decades. Either Omar-S is employing some world class pornographic foley artists, or there’s an audio track of two people really “doing it”.

“Here’s Your Trance, Now Dance” is still the most recognizably ecstatic track on the LP, but it’s given a serious run for its money by the title track, where filter mutated synth stalagmites seem to be sprouting out of the ground all around the dancefloor. “Nite’s Over Compton” sets crashing high hats and mellow piano keys overtop clacking drums and acid 808s, and “Over You Too” sounds like you’re descending into the memory banks of a computer circa 1988, awash with fuzzy undulating bass.

All this is to say, this is one release that’s absolutely essential listening whether you’ve been following Alex Omar Smith for years or if you’re new to this whole thing. Grab it at Phonica now.

Distal – Boss Of The South (teaser video)

“Boss Of The South” is a new track from Atlanta producer Distal and the title rings true, out on Sindens Grizzly label September 12th.

“I was in Austin, Texas when producer/DJ Dubbel Dutch played me Distal’s ‘Boss Of The South’ after our Ustream,” Sinden recalls. “On that US tour I was exposed to a lot of great music, but this was an absolute beast – it stood head and shoulders above everything I heard and it was really produced, totally original, gangster but playful, energetic with that Southern rap attitude – a rolling cult rap and bass anthem. I had to find the Atlanta-based boss of the South behind it!”
