KRUEGER - GALACTICA EP (SIL008)

Kreuger – Galactica EP

“Synth-seared Electropic 808 rollers from the Silverback clan, backed with deeper house and future crunk-style remixes. Much like his labelmates Nguzunguzu and Damu, Krueger’s ‘Galactica’ is about the flashy swagger sound, firing shades-in-the-club synths and manicured machine syncopation to bump with, while ‘Nou’ hits into a class fusion of electronica melodies and tribal ruffige. On a more mellow tip, Bambounou slydes with sweeter keys while Sinjin Hawke comes big and bilious with remixes of ‘Galactica’.”

Huge new release from the folks at Silverback Recordings – Get it HERE and listen to the classification-defying “Nou” in full below.

oki-ni presents: THEHOTLUNCH by Derrick Carter

British boutique oki-ni continues with their mix series, this time they go for the gold.

“We love each mix in our mix series equally – as if they were our children – but we have to admit that this week’s is a little bit special. One of the world’s best-known DJs, Derrick Carter was instrumental in the Chicago house revival of the 90s and now the famously-reclusive DJ, and one of Chitown’s favourite sons, is gracing the oki-ni mix series with his presence. For his mix, Derrick has taken more of a soul and disco approach, creating a eulogy for the lunchtime mixes that he used to avidly tune-in to on Chicago local radio back in the 80s.

Back in the ’80s, WBMX radio here in Chicago used to play a LOT of mixes: there’d be the regular “Friday Night Live – Ain’t No Jive Chicago Dance Party”; the standard Saturday night mixes from 10:00 – 4:00; the after work or rush hour mix; and my fav, “The Hot Lunch Mix”.

Coming in at noon every weekday, it was a nice little bit of heat to break up the monotony at Walther Lutheran High School. I used to have a lunch period followed by study hall right around that time of the day, so I’d sneak and listen to it while either eating or pretending to do homework. The mixes were always friendly (since it WAS broadcast radio, there was no swearing). And they were usually more on the song and groovy tip than some of the more jacking stuff played at night or on the weekends.

Using that as my main focus, I decided to go on a disco & classics trip, which I think will work lovely if you want to listen to it while eating lunch at your desk, walking to get some grub, or just sitting on a bench and watching the rest of the world do its thing.

I hope y’all enjoy it.

-Derrick Carter”

When Saints Go Machine – Parix

When Saints Go Machine have probably never been accused of sounding like someone else. Or if they have, that “someone else” was probably an ethereal choir made up of Arthur Russel reincarnated as a thousand teenagers in the suburbs teenagers. All this is to say that the new single “Parix” is weird, and good, and has a weird, good video to match. Lots of beautiful young people look at things and feel bored, or maybe nihilistic, or maybe pregnant. It’s tough to tell. One of them does some drugs that I’ve never seen before on a car ride. What is that?

Regardless, much like the rest of their album it’s very beautiful haunting stuff with some pop sensibility wedged in the middle. Grab it on iTunes or Rough Trade.

Bonus points if you pick out the brilliant “Face Off” tee with John Travolta’s name and Nicolas Cage’s image, a meme started by the hugely deserving-of-your-money African Apparel company.

DJ Dodger Stadium – Stadium Status

There’s probably enough dance music creativity split between Samo Sound Boy and Jerome of LOL Boys to create a 48 hour live percussion laced opera that could only be performed in the depths of LA’s sewer system, so their recently formed Body High label feels ripe to bursting with potential. The first release, the “Stadium Status” EP is a warning sign to American dance music labels everywhere to step their game up, five tracks merging new and essential classic Dance Mania vibes indistinguishably.

Calling your lead single “Stadium Status” would seem to imply that it’ll be one for the clubs, and that’s certainly true here. Pitched up vocals referencing “all you hos” behind some bubbling-coffee-pot acid synth work melds together to result in a big psychedelia infused drop three minutes in.

However, the video delves into some darker territory. A second-long clip of Rodney King getting assaulted by the police quickly cuts away to huge fires blazing in downtown LA, verging of engulfing the highway in flame. It feels like an acknowledgment of one of the important events in the last quarter century that perseveres in shaping LA’s identity today, and adds a sinister kind of urgency to the track.

Buy the Stadium Status EP on Beatport or Juno Downloads now, and stream the entire EP on Soundcloud.
