Old Money – Dolla Van (Acuras, Maximas, Cressidas & Celicas)

Sonically invoking grime/kuduro/hard edged South African House, the new track from Old Money connects / confronts “seemingly disparate things such as: historically black fraternities and sororities in the U.S., pre-Columbus African presence in the western hemisphere, police brutality, “tutting”, euro-centric beauty standards, our Jamaican and Guyanese heritage, and more”

Also helps that it’s a huge jam.

Dubbel Dutch – Hymn EP + Unknown To The Unknown Mix

Seems like just the other day that I saw Dubbel Dutch’s “Throwback EP” on the front shelf of the “staff recommended” list in a basement record shop in Osaka, Japan – proof that even without record labels throwing millions of dollars at you, having a knack for making unique, transcendental dance music can get you respect from every corner of the globe.

So, maybe then it’s no surprise that Dubbel Dutch’s next EP will be collaborating with the extremely globally minded Mixpak imprint, quickly following the heat generated by his fantastic remix of Vybz Kartel’s “Half On A Baby” which kept all the pop heat of the vocals with a deep underground vibe incorporated.

The “Hymn EP” has already received support from Ramadanman, Girl Unit, Bok Bok, Mosca, and Samo Sound Boy amongst many others, and looks to continue Dubbel Dutch’s tradition of smashing down expectations – an early review of the EP includes the phrase “As if goth Kids fell head over heels in love with Miami Bass”. Definitely sounds on track.

Bonus: Dubbel Dutch guested on DJ Q’s 1Xtra show recently, and Unknown to the Unknown threw up a download link for your aural pleasure (because with global timezones being so effing confusing, who can actually catch a radio show at the right hour these days?)

Jacques Greene – Motivation

Now that it’s been a minute since Jacques Greene’s self-titled “Greene” vinyl white label series was launched, he’s decided to do a kind thing for the internet and share his Kelly Rowland rework that soundtracked a summer of bump-and-grind moments. On par with his consistently high quality other reworkings, “Motivation” is the kind of big-room jam that satisfies purists and people just looking to scream along to their favorite lyrics alike.

Download from Soundcloud for free below, a few copies of the 10″ are still available at Phonica if you’re quick.

ANGO – Another City Now

ANGO (birth name Andrew Gordon Macpherson) is the latest in a long line of producers from Montreal to break into the spotlight, his debut EP “Another City Now” was just released by excellent tastemaking Scottish label LuckyMe. The EP sees ANGO draw on influences ranging from 80′s pop, early 90′s house and r’n'b to create a striking balance between upbeat and deep, vintage and modern, uplifting and heartaching.

Juk Juk – Frozen / Winter Turns Spring

By no means a new release (it dropped back at the beginning of October) but absolutely one that’s been garnering tons of repeated play at Discobelle HQ is Juk Juk’s new 12″ on Four Tet-curated Text Records.

Melding garage house with a genre that maybe is still classifiable as dubstep but probably not really (considering that dubstep is the same term that PR emails are using to describe the Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull remixes they’re flooding the internet with), “Frozen” takes you through a minute of softly thumbed acoustic strums and monklike stuttering before a restless, thumping broken beat comes speeding out of nowhere and replaces the quiet with a thoroughly satisfying climax.

“Winter Turns Spring” also turns on a pulsating rhythm that slowly gets amplified by buzzing static electricity, it’s a track that make six minutes feel like a heartbeat. Call it instrospective two-step, dubstep for people who absolutely loathe dubstep, or just don’t try to lump it into any classifiable category and listen to it again and again and again and again.

DJ Stingray Enters The Unknown

Detroit’s mostly-masked DJ Stingray & London’s DJ Haus team up for a rather dark slab of efficiently dangerous sounding techno. Entitled The Sadist Pts 1 & 2, the vinyl comes with remixes from legendary Heinrich Muller (Drexciya, Dopplereffekt) which you can grab a free download of from Fact Mag below.

Grab the vinyl at Phonica, and read up on a great DJ Stingray interview from The Wire magazine that talks in detail about the difficulty of getting condensation inside your mask and why Detroit techno is so damn fast.

Worthy – Lost Dog EP

San Francisco’s Anabatic label runner and Dirtybird co-founder Worthy is on one with his followup to last year’s “Big Perm” release on Discobelle Records. This time, he’s channeled his expert house percolation into the “Lost Dog” EP, accompanied by two remixes – one from amorphously adaptive percussive dream team LOL BOYS and another from Pelican Fly’s frenetically unpredictable dancefloor worker, Lucid.

“Lost Dog” starts off as a skeletal house beat with some big hollow, rapid wartime drums sounding off over shamanic incantations yelped in the background. Things quickly get a bit more fleshed out as the tune meshes together into cohesiveness – Joe’s “Claptrap” for the tech house set, but replacing handclaps, sparse piano and coughing with chirping cut up vocal bursts and an unending percussive beat that burrows its way inside your skull.

It’s tough to outshine the LOL Boys remix though, which completely revamps the source material into a runway worthy pulsing, bubbling 808 affair complete with a dancefloor slaying vocal cut. “I work the crowd, I REALLY work it” gets muttered by what could well be a New York City transexual go-go dancer while a ballooning, expanding bassline rumbles underneath, powerful enough to kill small animals and puncture eardrums of anyone standing too close to the sound system. Throughout the six minutes, the track undergoes a workout of percussive somersaults and sounds like Egyptian Lover had a love child with J. Phlip on a yacht somewhere in the South Pacific.

Lucid’s take on “Lost Dog” asks you to check your expectations at the door, as the sound of hitting one of those question mark boxes in Super Mario Bros. signals a descent into a wormhole that abandons any cohesion or sanity that you might expect. Skittering bursts of hip hop pseudo-trance infused drum machines gallop their way overtop unpredictable synth fluctuations – outrageous southern hip-hop melded with a trip down the K hole. After coming out the other end, it’s safe to say you’re not going to be the same.

Out November 7th, stream it in full on Soundcloud now!
