Interview: Zimmer

Jun 18 2015

Under the hot sun, we managed to steal Zimmer for a few moments to hear about his upcoming EP release with his Roche Musique friends and we were able to pick his brain for a bit. He’s been busy since we caught up with him a mere two days ago, and he’s released his single for his release on July 10th. Check out the track below, and check out our interview after the jump!

Discobelle: Hey Zimmer, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. I actually wanted to ask you about this hot weather. How do you focus on performing when there are so many external factors?

Zimmer: Well, when I start the set, I really don’t worry about anything else. I just focus on the music and my brain switches. It’s like a different mode! The weather can be anything, it can be very cold or hot. I’ve played through so many different things, I think I’ve played every kind of venue there is by now. I’m road ready. I can play wherever, whenever.

DB: That’s awesome. I heard you’ve lived in the US and in France…

Zimmer: Yes, I spent around 4 years in California when I was a kid, but mostly in France.

DB: Do you notice any differences in what different crowds in different countries react to?

Zimmer: Naturally, there’s always a little bit of an adjustment based on time and location, but I try to bring the same vibe wherever I’m playing. I have a certain vision of what I want to play so I try to make it like that.

DB: I wanted to know more about your upcoming work with Roche Musique.

Zimmer: Yes! The first single is on Monday. The full release is July 10th, so super excited about that.

DB: What drew you to working with the guys at Roche?

Zimmer: Well, I’ve known the guys for a long time and been friends with them for a long time,  it was very natural. We’re all sort of into the same music… It’s cool! We tour together… Like right now, I’m with Cherokee, (he was out getting drinks), and we’re kind of on the road together, we party a lot together in Paris, so it’s honestly just like a family thing.

DB: I’ve seen that in your past interviews, you’ve described your music as horizontal disco. How has your music changed since you first coined the term?

Zimmer: I think the horizontal term is still the same, but it’s definitely getting house-ier. I’m shifting away a little bit away from disco. Although… I don’t like putting a genre on my music overall. To me, [my music] is something new. I’m using [elements] of disco and house and pop to bring together something fresh. I think that’s what Roche is about. We’re all creating something new.

DB: Okay, time for you to give some advice to people out there. What advice would you give those looking to get into the DJ/production world?

Zimmer: I think the most important is to find your own sound and be fully immersed in that, but to still be diverse. Once I settled on a sound, that helped me [tremendously]. That’s when things started to grow.

Thanks Zimmer for taking your time to talk to us. We’re super excited to hear the full EP in July.
