Mix of the year? Let’s give it up for Kingdom!

Kingdom is a Brooklyn-based producer and DJ whose signature sets and productions have been gathering a following since he released his first mixtape in 2006.

“For this mix I wanted to showcase tracks that moved me physically and emotionally, and tracks that represent the new sound aesthetic of a small unit of future-minded DJs worldwide. Syncopated drums, heavy bass, and female vocals can be found throughout the mix, including several original tracks, remixes, and edits that were created while making the mix. This mix is also a prequel to my first official release which will be out via Fools Gold and Acephale next month.

Download: Kingdom – Mix for Discobelle, Oct 09 (zShare) (alt link)

1) Kingdom – Wine & Stomp (Intro)

Dark trancehall you can wine your waist and stomp your feet to.

2) Jam City – In the Park (Kingdom Refix ft. Allure)

Jam City is a new London-based producer who is making very open-minded club music. I added some bass drops and vocals from the acapella of R&B group Allure’s 1998 hit “Head Over Heels.”

3) Bok Bok – Ripe Banana

I was staying at Night Slugs HQ in south London when Bok Bok was finishing this track, and I would wake up to the subs pumping this track each morning. I think it’s imprinted in my subconscious because I am transported every time I hear it. 10 out of 10.

4) L-Vis 1990 – United Groove (Kingdom Remix)

This remix will be released on the United Groove remix EP, out next month on Mad Decent. Ethereal vocals and echo pianos drifting over broken drums and trance stabs.

5) Cooly G – Jus Wanna

Cooly G is the most intriguing producer to me at the moment. Her productions are simple, experimental, and entirely unique. On top of that, she does all the vocals on her tracks. So instead of found vocal samples, she is recording her own vocal samples, and the results are incredible.

6) KG – 808

Each time the beat progresses and a new part kicks in, it comes as a welcomed surprise, and when the strings finally break through, it feels like freedom.

7) Roska – Elevated Level (Kingdom Edit ft. Brandy)

It’s an old Roska track at this point, but I play this vocal edit out a lot. This is the track I play when it’s time to bring the energy level up. Even a tiny vocal sample from legendary vocalist Brandy manages to make this track into an anthem.

8) Marcus Price & Carli – Mat, Bira, Kvinnor, Weed (Kingdom Remix)

There are certain tracks that I am magnetized to and have no choice but to remix, even though they didn’t ask for one! This was one of those.

9) Dubbel Dutch – Throwback

Brand new track from Texas’s own Dubbel Dutch. The mixing and compression on this track are so nice. Chopped diva vocals and clean sub-bass. I love the drifting cool-down moment in this track too, and when the breakbeat kicks back in, you know you need to brace yourself for a huge drop.

10) Lil Silva – Different (Kingdom Remix ft. Jazmine Sullivan)

It seems like some of the best UK funky beats are just begging for vocal versions. Here we have a sample of the incomparable Jazmine Sullivan going off over a Lil Silva’s grimey funky banger.

11) DJ Makency – Ragga Jump

My Los Angeles family NGUZUNGUZU and DJ Total Freedom turned me on to tribal guarachero, which is a fusion of tribal house and cumbia, and it has become my favorite genre of late. Intensely syncopated hand percussion mixed with stomping kicks and serious sub-bass. Interestingly this track has a reggae vocal sample on it, adding to the mixup.

12) DJ Alan Rosales – Claps

Another banging tribal guarachero track, this one with an indescribably fluctuating arpeggiated synth lead.

13) KS-20 – Fun-key (Instrumental)

KS-20 is a Japanese baile funk producer (!?) who incorporates influences of classic house and dubstep to his tracks. This is an instrumental dubplate he made for me of one of the tracks I heard on his MySpace player. The kids go off vogueing to this one.

14) Lil Silva – Pulse vs. Flex

I got into this track hearing it played by Bok Bok and L-vis 1990 last year, and I am still obsessed. It combines the bass from Musical Mob’s grime classic “Pulse X” with Silva’s signature “acoustic” snares and hi-hats. That persistent hissing open hi-hat that never closes is so unique to this track.

15) Kingdom – Mindreader ft. Shyvonne (Bok Bok Remix)

I’m really looking forward my first release. We have remixes from Todd Edwards, L-Vis 1990, and this dark-drone-triplet-garage banger of a remix from Bok Bok.

16) Lenny Fonata – Spirit of the Sun (Bump & Flex Mix)

Give me classic 2-step with organ bass and diva vox and I’m all good.

17) DJ Corlando – Passa Passa (Kingdom Remix)

This is a kuduro remix I made for my set at Night Slugs last year. I finally finished it while making this mix. By the end of it, it’s a totally different track, with a pleading Keyshia Cole sample near the end.

18) Kingdom – YOU

This is the B-side to my upcoming Fools Gold / Acephale release. Bubbling-trance with an SWV sample on helium.

19) Terror Danjah – With U ft. Shola Ama

Rhythm & grime was my favorite sub-genre. The soulful side of grime that never got enough shine. I’m still upset it didn’t yield big chart hits. Davinche and Terror Danjah were working with Sadie and Shola Ama, and the results were mind-bogglingly beautiful. This skittery track from 2004 reminds me of the innovation and elegance of Timbaland’s early work with Aaliyah. Terror and the sisters Ama are apparently linking up again, so I’m hopeful.

20) Young Dot – DPM Remix / Threat Misses – Juke Ya Girl (Kingdom Remix)

A shorter version of this blend was on my first mixtape in 2006. I recently revisited it and expanded it, adding melodies and drums.

21) The Dream – Fancy

The Dream and Tricky Stewart are the most important R&B production team in America right now. The way the track slowly builds and the details in the arrangement are truly amazing. Listen to this track on your mobile phone on top of a mountain in the desert for best results.”

Krakow duo Supra 1 are the newest members of the menacing bass phenomena known as NYC label Trouble & Bass. Here they are with a huge latest edition of our Mixin’ It Up series, this will seriously put a dent in your weekend and many more weekends to follow. US peeps, they’re embarking on a US tour next week so check their MySpace for details on which cities they’ll pulverize.

Download: Supra – Mixin’ It Up for Discobelle (Megaupload)

Royal-T – Beat Fighter (Bok Bok Remix) / Unreleased, forthcoming No Hats No Hoods

‘Grime in disguise’.

Brackles & Shortstuff – Saturito Faita / Planet Mu

Easily one of my favourite tracks of the year. Ultimate number 1 as far as the drums are concerned.

Joy Orbison – Wet Look / Hotflush

Sounds like:

null

TRG – Siberian Poker / Unreleased

Heard it first in the Untold’s fact mix and it stood out so much. That lead line is so vicious! One of these rare tracks that are avantgarde in a way but with high dancefloor potential too.

Gemmy – Rainbow Rd / Planet Mu

Simply THIS:

+ THIS:

IMG_7890

Supra1 – Kowloon / Unreleased, forthcoming Trouble & Bass

Kowloon was a tiny Chinese enclave that was located in the middle of British Hong Kong for decades. Originally a military fort, it became a very dense urban settlement, until it was torn down in 1993. The city was notorious for its excess of brothels, casinos, opium dens, cocaine parlours, food courts serving dog meat, and secret factories. Personally, one of our favourite spots in Hong Kong.

Rustie – Bad Science / Wireblock

Rusto brings the FILTH.

Mark Pritchard & Om’mas Keith – Wind It Up / Hyperdub

Ridiculous tune. First time I heard it was on a beach, chatting with a beautiful girl, sipping on drinks, watching the sunset. Our clothes were all wet, it was freezing.

Terror Danjah – Zumpi Hunter (Swindle Remix) / Planet Mu

You can’t mess with Terror Danjah and those synthlines either.

Supra1 – I Still Believe / Unreleased, forthcoming Trouble & Bass

Soulful is the word. We love chicago house influenced diva type of vocals and melodies and so decided to do a track that takes that and mixes it with T&B’s hit’em, smash’em tear’em crash’em attitude.

Drop The Lime – Devils Eyes (Supra1 Remix) / Unreleased, forthcoming Trouble & Bass

When we got the parts to do the Devils Eyes remix and heard the vocal track it was shivers down the spine. It was clear we needed to do a tune that would create space for the vocals and put it in the limelight.

SMD – Cruel Intentions (Joker Remix) / Wichita

Bristol —> Stuck In The System —> Cruel Intentions Remix

Mixin It Up: Cobra Krames

Friday, September 11th, 2009

krames_heatstroke

No one wears a mullet like Cobra Krames and few can get their mix on like he does.

“It was the beginning of what would become an epic summer, and I was restless from the heat. Unanswered questions arise to any man seeking meaning in what has become many moons of partying. I decided to go on a vision quest to seek inspiration; for the future of the dancefloor depended on it! I spent my summer on the isles of the great Shamans, smoking ceremonial pipes, eating mushrooms & chanting till the wee hours of the morning. At times it was if the sun never set and I found myself in enormous drum circles with the high chiefs of many forgotten tribes. In sweat tents we sipped tea and meditated over the powerful trance-inducing drumming of the Shaman. At the summer’s end I returned to Bushwick Brooklyn a changed man. The sounds I’d heard on those beaches and mountains had inspired me to re-create those feelings on the dancefloor.

Download: Cobra Krames – Mixin It Up for Discobelle (zShare)

“New Mission” – Cobra Krames & “Make Em Shake It” (acapella) – Wahoo
I wanted to start the mix with a big rave anthematic intro so make that happen , then I sampled Tangerine Dream’s “Kiew Mission” to make the melody for the riddim, it really sounds a lot like Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” I think.

“Club Love” Dub – Cobra Krames
This is a riddim I made for The Cataracs from the bay area for a remix of there “Club Love” single. I like the dub version so I used that w/ the Wahoo acapella as well for that mega mix feeling!

“Allah Ma Diana” – Le Zagazougou & “Party Hard” – Donaeo
I like the drum riddim in “Allah Ma Diana” and Donaeo has a great voice, really cool in that context. I thought it would be a good seg-way into the rest of the mixtape.

“Afreaka” – Solo & “Brooklyn Anthem” (acapella) – 77 Klash
I got this acapella from Klash and I really wanted to rep Brooklyn right in the mix, I live here so its important to rep that in the music and we’re creating some dope new styles here and Klash really is pushing new music and the direction of the party. “Afreaka” has a dope tribal feel to it that I am really driving through the mix.

“E Samba” (Cobra Krames Remix) – Junior Jack
E Samba is a dope Latin House tune that I really wanted to put a twist on, so I worked with the acapella and turned it into a Puerto Bass Banger, I think the industrial power saw bassline combined w/the ringtone and techno synths makes for a dope combination.

“The Leak” – N.B. Funky
Dude is pushing the UK Funky scene for sure and he’s got a buncha tunes, it was really hard to choose which one to pick for the mixtape, but I think “The Leak” really fits in with my production sound for the mixtape and works to bridge my original tunes together.

“Bajo del Bongo” Dub – Cobra Krames & “Mas Que Nada” (acapella) – Sergio Mendes
One of two beats I made recently with a Baile Funk and Tribal House vibe in mind, so you catch elements of both of those styles, with the tambors and fills, but you get a 4 on beat as well with some heavy bass. The “Mas Que Nada” vocal I thought was simply a good fit and also seg-ways really nice into the next section of the mixtape.

“Wonton Garden Riddim” – Spoek & “Nice Green” (acapella) – Jahdan Blakkamoore & “Delirio del Sotano” Dub – Cobra Krames
This Riddim is currently one of my favorites, I’ve heard it used a few different ways and it just seems to work no matter how you flip it, Spoek killed it with this one. The “Nice Green” acapella is dope and Jahdan be killin’ it right now , dude is about to blow up on some major shit , he has to!! “Delirio del Sotano” is the other Tribal Funk Riddim that I recently made, taking from some influence of Masters At Work on the snares and really driving in the whistle, thats my shizz, the whistle!!!

“Hey Rumba” – Bangana & “Makonde” – Uncle Bakongo
I really like the breakdown in “Hey Rumba”, it really symbolizes the style of the movement in the music and what puts this apart from other things you hear, the chanting and melodic percussive instrumentation and then putting that w/ the Riddim of “Makonde” which is very organic.

“My Penis” (Cobra Krames Remix) – Larry Tee & Perez Hilton
This is one of those tracks that people tend to get a kick out of, the original is on Larry Tee’s summer release of “My Penis” and “My Pussy” b-side, I have got a lot of comments on how this is simply a fun tune! Produced in a similar vain to the other original tracks featured on the mix.

“Inflation” – Crazy Cousinz & “Do Dis Thang” (acapella) – Cobra Krames ft. 215TFK
Crazy Cousinz doing some big things in the UK Funky scene and I wanted to flip one of there tunes on the mixtape, so I did that with an acapella from an upcoming single I have coming out w/ 215 The Freshest Kids, we recorded these hooks at the crib while Buddy Lezzle was in town and Cerebral Vortex lives in NYC now so thats a good look.

“Calinda” (Cobra Krames Remix) – Ritmo-Dynamic
This is one of those tunes that really reps the style on the mixtape. Like the other ones, its got some rave synths and heavy bass with a tribal riddim. I really like the track “Calinda” so I thought it would be dope to put a bass feeling to it and get it poppin’.

“Uptown Pon De Floorever” – Cobra Krames
I was on a journey and I thought to myself, what is a reggaeton melody that everyone knows that I could flip w/ my style. At that same moment I realized how similar the words Baltimore and Pon De Floor sound if you say them fast together ya know. I decided to make it epic w/ some big reverb and a simple bassline to drive the horns from “Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)” and do something tonal w/ the pon de floor phrase making it go up and down.

Mixin’ It Up: Brandon Sek

BSEKART450

Time for this weeks edition of Mixin’ It Up. This time we go to Toronto, Canada to hang out with Brandon Sek from Curbcrawlers. But apart from running one of the best blogs around he is also a great DJ. Take it away Brandon:

Download: Brandon Sek – Mixin It Up for Discobelle (direct link)

1. Tom Flynn – San Fran Shuffle

Some brand new unsigned music from Tom Flynn. I love the way it slowly builds up with horn stabs, tense strings and eardrum rattling 808’s. It sets the tone for the rest of the mixtape perfectly.

2. Kenton Slash Demon – Singla

Tartelet’s 007 release has been without a doubt one of my favorite EP’s of he year. The KSD guys really break the mold here with some chunky subs and off-time percussion that result in some serious head nod sh*t. Only recently did i discover that KSD are both members of When Saints Go Machine whom have been on regular CCHQ rotation for years.

3. Renaissance Man – Aloha (Dub Mix)

Chest crushing bass weight from team Renaissance Man on one of 2009 most forward thinking labels Sound Peligrino. Similar to KSD’s Singla, the Dub Mix of Aloha experiments with some really dope rhythmic patterns that keep things particularly interesting

4. John Tejada – Torque

Some “classic” Tejada thrown in here. I’ve been a big fan of his music ever since he released a dnb single on Klute’s Commercial Suicide label some years ago. I quite enjoy the sinister “mars attacks” feeling in this one. Dark without being overly noisy.

5. Claude Vonstroke & Bootsy Collins – The Greasy Beat (Funk Bomb Mix)

Love this one to bits. Forthcoming on Dirtybird CVS teams up with Funk legend Boosty Collins for some low riding booty slap business.

6. LOTP – Bathroom Gurgle (Duke Dumont Remix)

I don’t think this tune’s left my favorites list since it dropped late last year. Big boy 808’s reminiscent of Aux88 on a Detroit Electro Techno tip from Dumont that’s stood the test of time.

7. Carola Pisaturo – Et Voila (Cinelli 2009 Remix)

Picked this one up while checking out Barem’s beatport top ten chart. I absolutely love Barem’s deep house and although this remix wasn’t done by him, I think it does a bang up job and highlighting a trend in techhouse/deephouse pushing ultra low dnb-like rolling subs under the kick. Rib shattering basslines here.

8. Audion – Jukebox Hero

Brand new Audion on Spectral here. Audion’s most recent works show him carving out a really unique sound that I’m all over right now. Like Stimming, this sloppy broken funk laden house suits Audion and I hope he keeps running with it.

9. Dubbel Dutch – Trollsta (Round Table Knights Remix)

Forthcoming on Palms Out Sounds Records, My good friend and guest Curb Crawlers blogger Dubbel Dutch gets the remix treatment from Round Table Knights.

10. Kenton Slash Demon – Khattabi

Tartelet 007 here again. Without a doubt this is 2009’s 12″ of the year.

11. Poligono – Let Me Down Easy

Fresh out Mexico. Poligono’s been getting a good number of people talking lately and we’ve only heard the tip of the iceberg from him so far. Love the old Soul edits in this one. Currently unreleased, forthcoming on a fine label shortly no doubt.

12. J Phlip – Rumble Rumble

A Dirtybird favorite from 2008. Still does damage on in the dance like clockwork.

13. Matthew Dear & Seth Troxler – Hurt

Decided to ride Seth’s vocals of this mix for a short bit to spice it up.

14. Brooks – IWANCHU

Taken from the AUS music All Night Long LP which is an absolutely banging Album! Crossing the best in Dubstep, Funky and Deep House it’s defiantly something to pick up if you haven’t already.

Mixin’ It Up: Bok Bok

Friday, March 13th, 2009

null

We’ve been meaning to get Alex Sushon AKA Bok Bok - dj/producer/graphic designer who’s one of the budding names in the UK dance music scene, responsible for the Night Slugs radio show/parties in London and generally one of the nicest dudes we’ve encountered – to do a mix for us for some time but since we’re all busy it took a little while to get it finalized. But we can tell you that it’s definetely been worth the wait, Bok Bok comes correct with an absolutely smashing mix where every single track is stellar.

“For my installment of Mixing It Up, I wanted to give you guys a taste of where the Night Slugs sound is at right now. 2009 has been amazing so far, people are more open-minded than ever, sets are diverse and suddenly it feels like anything is possible.

As a DJ my aim is to gather tracks from a wide range of sources, scenes and styles and make them all work together in a riddim-y, dutty uk soundsystem / pirate conext. I’m originally a grime head, but the emergence of the UK Funky scene has got me looking for that raw percussive momentum and bass energy in all sorts of strange places.

To guarantee that rolling pirate style, this mix was recorded live on the decks (as I’m sure you’ll hear!). I recommend listening on a night drive / while cycling, or running, preferably at night, and if you’re listening at home turn up your sub!”

Bok Bok – Discobelle Mix, March 2009 (Sharebee)

1. Riva Starr – War Drums

An out-of-character tune for Riva Starr, all minimal nail-biting toms, this is the perfect ‘oh no it’s gon happen! ‘ intro.

2. Karizma – Outta Control

UK Funky hits like Donaeo’s Party Hard have got us drawing for the Defected and Strictly Rhythm back catalogs, and digging up things like this haunted riddim by Karizma. I love the brass section!

3. Essy & Vibes – Dream On

Tunes like this are the reason I like to call the new UK House movement ‘Grime in Disguise’. Tropical bass!

4. Perason Sound – Wad

This was made by a certain house and techno-infused producer of twisted dubstep – guess who. Banging broken, twitchy house with a big gutter sub. I can’t stop playing this one at the moment.

5. Martin Kemp – No Charisma

I’m sort of responsible for the title of this track – it’s a funny-ish story that I won’t tell here. This twilight riddim with the heavy kwaito pitchbending synth line was produced by Martin Kemp, the brother of badderman DJ Brackles, and is forthcoming on the later’s label.

6. Gregor Salto – Just For Fun (Bok Bok’s edit ft. Hawatha

The vocal on this track comes from Hawatha, a Texas rapper that my friend Prince William is working with at Krispee Ones studios. Out to the TX connection.

7. L-Vis 1990 – Run

This L-Vis dubplate is a current personal favourite of mine. He makes it seem so easy!

8. Emvee – Glitch Dub

The drop on this tune is devastating! UK house at it’s most cantankerous.

9. Wizzbit – Jam Nite

Wizzbit is the alias of garage>grime>funky godfather Geeneus. He’s worked a lot of styles over the years but despite Jam Nite dating back to 2003 the insane bruckout drums and the huge bassline in this tune sound more relevant than ever. Definitely one of my favourite grime classics.

10. Karizma – Darqness

If you’re driving to this mix like I recommended, this is when your vehicle takes flight. Jackin’ celestial merkery from Karizma.

11. Sarantis ft Warrior Queen – More Than Money (Starkey remix)

Starkey transforms Warrior Queen’s pining ballad for the ‘boys dem’ into a cyborg hypergrime tribute to sweet love.

12. Spooky – Got Myself Together Riddim

Spooky is king of grime bootlegs, and this is no exception. The sweet vocal hook is swiped from a classic uk garage track and twisted into Spooky’s signature carnival style.

13. Diplo & Laidback Luke – Hey! (L-Vis 1990 remix)

I love the original of this tune too, but also love how L-Vis made it sound really immersive and disorientating.

14. Zomby – Entropy

Fresh from the ever-mutating Zomby – alien, crunked-up house/grime/dubstep.

15. Joe – Rut

Rut is forthcoming on the amazing Hessle Audio, and you can tell straight away when you hear it. A beautifully executed, lush and percussive garage-dubstep track with a unique celestial warmth.

16. Lil Silva – Get Wid This

We Night Slugs are big Lil Silva fans. His decidedly grimey take on UK Funky has set a benchmark for huge, driving productions that simply destroy raves. The combination of militant brutality and luminously bright carnival synths remind me of why I love grime.

17. Bok Bok – Ram Riddim

Something that mutated out of working with L-Vis on our Bongo Jam refix. Ram, because originally there was a typo in our refix that read “Bongo Ram”. Say what you mean eh?

18. Kingdom – You

Kingdom is absolutely unique and one of my favourite producers. He blends the aesthetics of UK garage with classic rave, hardcore, jumpstyle, – even trance, with a heavy dose of the drama and emotion of classic Chicago house. His new material is on fire!

19. Matt Shadetek – Battery Charge Riddim

I love the story that Matt’s Brooklyn Riddim was appropriated up by bashment kids in NYC and it became a hit in that scene. Never one to stand by idly, Matt made a whole batch of grimey bashment/house directly aimed at that scene, this riddim is one of them. Sounds like a 4×4 Ruff Sqwad

20. Christian Martin – Elephant Fight (Justin Martin’s Jungle remix)

A deceptive subtitle for a remix that’s not Jungle style so much as it’s IS a jungle, a sweltering pressure dungeon. Those elephants are NOT happy.

21. Untold – Sweat

Forthcoming on Hotflush Recordings, this track is my rubbery yet blissed out outro. Enjoy!

Mixin’ It Up: DJ Tuco

Friday, February 20th, 2009

null

Friday and time for another Mixin’ It Up, this time we’re going to Brazil for some baile funk via British born but currently residing in Prague DJ Tuco. He recently spent a month in Rio and he picked up some tunes. Enjoy!

“Hi, my name’s DJ Tuco, I’m from a pretty dull place in England called Reading (Does It Offend You Yeah?, Ricky Gervais, Kate Winslet) where I grew up on a diet of house music and Hip hop, I’ve been DJing and promoting parties since the mid – late 90’s. I’ve also lived in Italy and and the last few years i’ve been in Prague which is wicked. Alongside DJ Quime we promote the infamous Dutty Weekend parties…Be sure to check out them out if you are ever round these parts.

I recently spent a month in Rio where I hooked up with a lot of people and had a blast, during my time there I picked up a lot of music mainly Baile Funk so I decided to throw a mix together. The hardest part was going though all the CD’s finding the playable stuff as the quality of the tracks over there wasn’t great, Most of this took place on a 10 hour car journey from Italy to Prague that almost sent my brother over the edge (mentally), next up was IDing the tracks (also a difficult task) then of course the fun part of mixing them. I don’t claim to be a Baile Funk expert, this is just a personal choice of music I thought was cool, if you want to know more check out these great blogs Soundgoods & Rio Baile Funk… So turn your heating up full, turn the volume up so its distorting and you have to shout to communicate with your flat mate, grab a warm whisky and red bull, sit back and enjoy!”

DJ Tuco – Mixin’ It Up for Discobelle (Sharebee)

MC Gi – Karma Sutra (Produced by DJ Edgar)

Anyone who has met Edgar will tell you he’s one of the nicest guys you could meet, we tours europe regularly and is well worth booking, before I left Rio he gave me a lot of his own production so he features heavily on this mix, which isn’t a bad thing because the quality is high and he’s one of the best out there!

DJ Sandrinho – Parapapa

Sandrinho shouldn’t need any introduction on these pages, one of the biggest names in Funk.

Lady Gaga – Just Dance (DJ Edgar Remix)

Edgar with another classic Montagem (Remix) the beckies on their year out in Prague love this…

Dino E Fu – Aquecimento Do Buffalo

This track translates to something like “warming up to buffalo” Buffalo Bill is referenced a lot in funk and would love to know why… I guess its something to do with the sample…

Putaria – Track 18

No it all gets a it strange, I bought a CD outside a Baile I went to with Gringo, they sold CD’s of Putaria (a word for sexually explicit funk), the CD itself cost one Reais… I did enjoy asking for “1 pack of cigarettes, 1 beer and CD of Putaria” needles to say there was no track list or artwork, just a CDR in a paper case. This is one of the few tracks from the CD without annoying drops every few seconds. If you can ID it I would be really grateful.

Putaria – Frog

From the same CD, its not actually called frog, I just tagged it that, it will become obvious why, again an ID would be sweet, Im sure I heard this quite a bit out there…

Pras Novinha Safada – Relaxa Na Pica

This is a dope track, I also like it because in Czech it would translate loosely to “relax on c**t” no idea what the it means in Portuguese.

????? – Mini Game

Dj Google tells me this montagem seems to have been made by quite a few people but I believe this could be another one of Edgar’s because the sound quality is actually very good, simple but great track, initial crowd reaction in Europe is usually one of bemusement!

DJ Vinicius – Delicia

Again another big track, this isn’t the original, the quality was just too bad, the Delicia sample is another one thats heavily used.

DJ Edgar & DJ Lendrao – Destination

Those horns again, given the Carioca treatment they sound as fresh as ever.

M (thats all I could get) – Cornetinha Fodoska da Vila Alianca

Crazily infectious, you’ll be humming this for hours after hearing, providing you’ve made it this far!

MC Bolinho & DJ Woody – Buffalo Bill

Ol’ Buffalo Bill rears his head again, I think this is the original “Buffalo Bill”, could be wrong, its a huge track though. you can sing along to this track “buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo, bill bill bill bill”

Tigrao – Uma Por Uma (Dj’s Dinho e Fu)

Tigrao not sure if this is linked to Bonde Do Tigrao or not but I love the sample of the kid (or woman with a squeaky voice), you get that a lot in funk… again I wish I knew what they were saying, I guess its know different to Czechs listening to Dancehall though!

Corneto Da Putaria

Unfortunately this track is pretty bad quality but it had to be included, it ticks all the boxes, shouty chorus, kids screaming some questionable beat boxing etc etc…

DJ Edgar Feat: Million Stylez

I like the break down in the middle of this track it kind of reminds me of a Funk version of a Scottie B track or something.

MC Gringo Feat: Amazing Clay – Berimbal

Ok, I had this track long before I went out to Rio but if I wouldn’t have met Gringo I wouldn’t have seen or heard half the stuff I did, so I wanted to include a track of his on here, amazing Clay is one of the original Funk Dj’s and also a great producer

Alex DJ MPC – Aquecimento Do Globo

I woke up on someone’s couch after a heavy drinking session at about 9 am and was woken up by this tune, my first reaction was to scramble around for my phone then I realized that it was coming from a car parked a few roads over, they must’ve have played it 3 or 4 times over the next couple of hours, then I just seemed to hear it every where! Very simple but a big big tune…

Mixin’ It Up: Jubilee

null

This should have been up friday but we’ve been busy opening Christmas gifts, hanging out with loved ones + getting rowdy on Boxing Day to find the time to post it, we’re sorry for the delay. It’s definetely worth the wait though. We proudly present this edition of our Mixin’ It Up series which was done by none other than the most amazing lady from NYC, Jubilee, she’s been killing it lately with a bunch of top class mixes. We’re glad she wanted to provide us with one that’s in fact also the last Mixin’ It Up of 2008 and she sure makes the year end with a bang. Here we go!

“Brooklyn’s own Jubilee is the press director for Berlin label Nightshifters. She also goes by 4AM Jess and sometimes DJs under the name Jolt. She does a monthly in Brooklyn called Flashing Lights alongside Nick Catchdubs, DJ Ayres and many special guests. You can also find her writing for Trash Menagerie, The 21 Gun Salute and Nightshifters.

Hi friends! This mix is basically where my head is at these days. Just a collection of some recent songs I am feelin’ and playing when I DJ, or dancing to when some of you are DJing. I try to be really careful when I pick out music these days. There is so much available that it is overwhelming. This is a mixture of some UK, Some Canadians, some breaks and some upcoming stuff from Nightshifters that we are anxiously waiting to release. There’s some great stuff from my New York Family too. New York is really killing it right now. There is some amazing music coming from here and I am really excited! I hope you enjoy. XOXO Jess

Download: Jubilee – Mixin’ It Up for Discobelle (dec 2008) (zShare)

1. Baobinga – State of Ghetto Jackin’ Feat DJ Nasty (Dave Nada Remix)

I am really feelin’ the Baobinga record on Trouble and Bass. The fact that there is a Dave Nada remix is an added bonus. Plus anything telling anyone to “Drop that thing” works for me.

2. Diplo and Buraka Som Sistema – Inna De Ghetto (Remix)

I can’t even verbally express how much I love Buraka Som Sistema. The fact that they remixed this song with Diplo is the perfect example of why I feel this way. The original was always on Power 96 when I lived in South Florida and now it has been brought to my current level so many years later. Also how awesome was Crystal Waters in the 90s?

3. Machines Don’t Care – Badman

I was afraid to listen to Machines Don’t Care for a while because the supergroup just seemed too good to be true and I was scared that I would be disappointed. I was wrong.

4. Crazy Cousinz Featuring MC Versatile – Funky Anthem

I was really hoping that this song would have a video because I predicted exactly what it would be like in my head. Sure enough here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98BRZFTyOwk . I want to party with them in my bathing suit.

5. AC Slater – No Party for Old Men

This is off of AC Slater’s upcoming EP on Nightshifters. I don’t know if you are ready for it.

6. Proper Villains – Big Top

I love this song. Jon from Proper Villains really kills it. His upcoming EP on our label is going to be amazing.

7. Armand Van Helden Featuring Team Facelift – Shake That Ass (Drop the Lime Remix)

If you are on Twitter I highly suggest adding Team Facelift’s “The Fat Jew”. Laughs for days.

8. Machines Don’t Care – Beat Bang (Trevor Loveys Dub Mix)

I found this song while being mad at myself for neglecting Machine’s Don’t Care.

9. Bassbin Twins – Ruffest

I think I have a subconcious rule in my brain that makes me put a Bassbin Twins song in every single mix I make. I never ever do it on purpose. It always just works out that way in the end. This line between dubstep and breaks keeps getting thinner and thinner and I am not mad at that at all.

10. AC Slater – Hello

Hello! I am AC Slater and every song I make is fucking awesome.

11. Kid Sister – Pro Nails (Rusko Remix)

This song sounds like it would be the worst idea ever but it is SO GOOD. And how about that Essential mix?

12. Starkey – Gutter Music

I have been listening to “Ephemeral Exhibits” pretty often and this is my favorite song for sure.

13. Egyptrixx – All That Jelly

More Egyptrixx in ‘09 please.

14. Little Jinder – Polyhedron (Mikix the Cat Remix)

And while we are on the subject of people I would like to see more of in ‘09…

15. Douster – This Shit (2 Bit Thugs ‘Late As Hell’ Remix)

I hope that one day I am at the point where I can get Busta to scream on my intros just like Dilla did. I think I can make it happen…I know nothing about this song except for the fact that THIS SHIT IS A FUCKIN EMERGENCY.

16. Audio Bullys – Dope Fiend (Tommie Sunshine and Udachi Remix)

This song gets stuck in my head for days at a time. Also one day you are going to wake up and Udachi is going to be EVERYWHERE.

17. Stanton Warriors – Blaze (Baobinga and ID Remix)

I saw Stanton Warriors this year. Pretty epic. I wish NY had more breaks parties. Baobinga and ID remixing Stanton Warriors…I knew I would like it before I even listened to it.

18. CT Burners – Kickin it Hardcore

CT Burners has 13 year old raver pics that are better than mine and I am jealous. The house music he has been producing definitely stems from his roots and I am starting to hear alot of it out. This song is definitely different than most of his stuff…and yes that is me on the vocals.

19. Lauren Flax featuring Sia – You’ve Changed (Dre Skull Remix)

If you don’t know how great of a DJ (and person) Lauren Flax is you definitely live under a rock and most likely aren’t reading this because you don’t have internet. Same goes for Dre Skull and his music.

20. Hard House Banton – Sirens

I saw this description when I found this song: “HARD Funky Chooon/Beat! Man Dem Know Itz HARD! .” Yep! Sounds about right.

21. DJ Double S – From Day (Cardopusher Remix)

I think I have gone through every phase that Cardopusher has except I never had dreads.

22. Jokers of the Scene – Baggy Bottom Boys (DZ Remix)

I don’t need to tell blog readers and club kids how good of a song Baggy Bottom Boys is. But I WILL tell them that they better not be sleeping on the DZ remix.”

BONUS TRACK:

The original version of “You’ve Changed” by Lauren Flax, single drops in January/February with 10(!) remixes from the likes of Dre Skull, Junior Sanchez, Larry Tee and Alexander Technique, Proper Villains, Chris Udoh and Deep C etc.

Mixin’ It Up: CFCF

CFCF is a producer from Montreal that makes smoothed out disco jams and he’s constantly killing it so we’re proud to present you with his addition to the Mixin’ It Up series. Here we go!

“Michael Silver (aka CFCF) is one of those rare talents to whom pop sensibility seems to be second nature. The Montreal native has been making music in his bedroom since he was 12 years old, but it’s only over the past year or so that the rest of the world has been able to share in his pop experiments. Despite having just exited his teenage years, CFCF has a musical depth that constantly surprises his elders with influences ranging from Jellybean and Pete Rock to Todd Rundgren and Fleetwood Mac. This wide scope of interest in genre and pop structure and mature melodic instinct allow him to shift gears effortlessly from italo to disco to balearic to piano house and everything in between. His pop music can be sweetly melancholy or creepily disturbing, but it is always fundamentally pop.

Having first caught tastemakers’ attention with his contest winning remix of Crystal Castles “Air War”, CFCF has gone on to produce official remixes for talents such as Sally Shapiro, The Presets, HEALTH, The Teenagers and Genghis Tron among many others. For the past couple of years he has honed his fluid, eclectic and always fun DJ sets at his weekly residency with Montreal’s Saturday mainstay, Dance Dance Dance. This wide-ranging taste is also reflected on his weekly radio show, “Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth,” on internet station Viva Radio. CFCF is constantly honing his own productions and the next couple of months will see releases through Acéphale (who brought us Salem) and Paper Bag Records.”

Basically the tracklist is some of his favourite stuff over the last few years – hope you like!

Download: CFCF – Mixin’ It Up for Discobelle, dec 2008 (Sharebee)

01 Polygon Window – If It Really Is Me

To me this song really sticks out on ‘Surfing on Sine Waves’… The title is such a contrast to the rest of song titles, and that combined with its sound and melodies really sets it apart. Like an RDJ ballad. 808s and Heartbreak, as Kanye would have it, I guess.

02 Still Going – Still Going Theme

I wasn’t really aware of what was going on at DFA in the last year or two until a friend showed me this song. That piano–so crisp; the melody, so simple and versatile! It seems minimal until you dissect how much is actually happening, and then of course it seems completely epic.

03 Global Communication – 8:07

A great ambient piece in the vein of Tangerine Dream from this amazing record (’76:14′). Not much else to say about it except that it’s gorgeous. Amazing flourishes.

04 Gucci Soundsystem – Acarpenter (Joakim remix)

Kind of a creeper. The arpeggios on this are pretty unusual, the melodies are somewhat hard to grasp even if the bass is constant. I think it belongs in a scene from ‘The Running Man’.

05 Lindstrom – Another Station

This song is pretty much a perfect mix of everything I’ve liked for the past 5 years. Disco-italo-disco-piano-house-balearic-8-bit-ambient-stomper. Lindstrom is just the best, really.

06 Gavin Russom & Delia Gonzalez – Relevee (DFA remix)

Just a well produced piece of modern disco-slash-house. But I guess that goes without saying with DFA. Sounding so vintage with its elements, disco drums and house pianos but so obviously from the future…

07 In Flagranti – Effective Placebo Affect

Terrifying dance music. Terrifying in the best sense of the word of course; I like music to frighten me. This is the soundtrack for a killing spree. The murder weapon? Slap bass!

08 The Knife – Silent Shout

An obvious one from my favourite record of 2006. Hard to believe this approaching 3 years old. Everything is so fresh and crisp–the 808, the arpeggiated synth, and of course the layered pitch-transformed vocals. I remember reading that this album was based partly on Charles Burns’ graphic novel ‘Black Hole’. So when I started reading that book I had this album on constantly, whenever I picked it up. The two compliment each other perfectly.

09 Popol Vuh – Aguirre I

Haunting score from one of the best movies ever! Definitely my favorite Popol Vuh’s scores for Werner Herzog. I don’t think the chorus comes from a mellotron–I think that Florian Fricke maybe created the sounds himself using the same principle. The effect is amazing. It’s not completely synthetic but it’s not quite real either.”

BONUS TRACKS: Two new remixes that will leave you aching for more of the sweet stuff from CFCF. The first is an official remix of Femme, the up-and-coming Montreal band signed to Saboteur Records (Numero, Omnikrom). CFCF takes the glam/goth sound of the original and turns it on its ear (as he seems to do with most of his remixes), building a bridge between nightmarish vocals, a dreamy synth line and crisply light piano solos. Femme are currently working on their album which will be out at some point in the new year. The second is an unofficial revisit of recent Cassie single “Official Girl” featuring Lil Wayne. He takes this track to a darker place that still seems to glitter. It’s certainly a definite departure from his previous work, but one that we hope people will like!

Mixin’ It Up: Botanika

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Sorry that this weeks Mixin’ It Up came a little bit late but we had so much stuff for you yesterday that we saved it for today. Let’s go to Tel Aviv:

“We’re Botanika – a DJ crew based in Tel Aviv, comprised of Nadav Ravid (aka NDV), Amir Egozy, and our disco-licious designer Lady Moon. We spin everything from soul, funk, reggae & hip hop up to a variety of dancefloor flavors, like house/techno/b-more/dubstep/breakbeats and whatnot. This mix is just a glimpse into our larger selection, quite similar to our Botanika FM radioshows, while on a real dancefloor we’d probably let the music breath a bit more, but as we had certain stuff we really wanted y’all to hear, we just had to cramp it all in.

We mostly do parties around town either by our own or alongside our local friends (Kalbata, Onili, Soulico, TABAC, Kids Up Late, East of Eden & the Supplement Facts posses among others) – so sometimes you’ll hear us playing pure dubstep while at others on a hip hop/dancehall/bass vibe or on a soul/disco/house tip & so on. Over the past few years we’ve DJ’ed alongside international talents like Diplo, Sinden, Stereotyp, Seiji, Ghislain Poirier, Orgasmic, Roots Manuva, Laurent Garnier, Trickski, Al-Haca, Jahcoozi, Benga, DK, Juan Mclean and many others.

Anyway, we like mixin’ it all up, which we get to on our own parties and on our weekly Botanika FM radioshow on 106FM. Each of us does also another weekly show of his own – Nadav presents a 2 hour music show on GLGLZ, Israel’s biggest radio station, and Egozy does a weekly podcast for Walla!, the biggest web Portal in Israel. Our Myspace usually has links to most of them, so if you dig this you’re welcome to visit us for more.

Be sure to check NDV’s Shirbul project – 13 remixes to all Israeli artists done over the past 5 years, some sung in English and some in Hebrew and on a wide range of musical styles – which can be downloaded for free as a zip file including all the separate tracks (in 320kbs mp3’s) + artwork, and/or as a 50 minutes continous DJ-mix done by Egozy – over here.”

Outkast – The Art of Storytelling

We thought this will be a fitting title to start off the mix with. We love Outkast in general, Andre 3000 had a magnificent year with lots of great guest spots, and this one has been very big for us.

John Miles – Stranger in the City (Pilooski edit)

Another big favorite for us – we dig a lot of what Pilooski has been doing, and this one has become sort of an anthem at our monthly loft parties.

Polar Pair ft Shawn Lee – Ever Happy (remix)

Polar Pair is Nadav’s collaboration with Malkiel Grossman – one of the first DJs to play electronic dance music here in Israel, and also a close friend, a mentor and  a source of inspiration for us. Botanika actually came together after Malkiel’s Sofabeat club closed down early 2004. On this track they host the multi-talented Shawn Lee, not a proper dancefloor tune, but we still wanted you to hear it.

Flying Lotus – Melt!

Like many around the world we’ve been captured by Fly Lo’s sci-fi take on hip hop and beat-making, and this one here is just one of the finest and simplest grooves he’s done – drop it on a buzzin’ dancefloor and see everyone go pre-historic!

El Guincho – Kalise (Frikstailers remix)

Stepping it up a bit with this wacky acid-cumbia remix of El Guincho, this is a hot new tune for us and has gotten us all hyped up, as both of us are very fond of good dancefloor tracks on slower-than-usual tempos that mix different elements into something fresh.

Jellybass – Wobble

This one has a bit of a nu-jazz flavor, alongside a wobbling bassline straight outta the dubstep arena – another example of hybrid sounds we enjoy spicing our sets with.

Cool Kids – What It Is

One of the more up-tempo and old-school flavored tracks by the Cool Kids, which we’ve been generally into over the past year.

Al Haca ft RQM, Coppa & Fefe – Banana Split (Polar Pair remix)

Polar Pair remixing our dear friends from Al-Haca Soundsystem, the sort of futuristic bass heavy dancehall we love so much.

Rustie – Pendulum

Another young producer which has become very big over the past year and so, this was the first track of his that really caught our ears and has proved itself each time we played it out.

Sugababes – Too Lost in You (Various Production remix)

Other than endlessly searching for rare stuff we also enjoy throwing in something with a bit of a pop flavor once in a while. Various Production are usually very interesting producers, thou not all of their output is really suitable for dancing.

Onili – Games (NDV ‘ave a new game remix) (http://remix.nadavravid.com/)

Onili is a close collaborator of ours and one of the more talented singers and performers we have the pleasure to work with. She’s done a song with Polar Pair, and this is one of two remixes NDV has done for her, which appeared on the first single from her forthcoming album. She also guests on the mic in some of our club gigs, and she and Egozy do monthly DJ/MC sessions at the Shesek lounge here in Tel Aviv.

Benga – Someone 20

Def one of the more talented dubstep producers around, this almost 4X4 track appears on any of the non-vinyl versions of his Afro Warrior album, samples the famous Night Rider theme, and kicks ass. Anyway, we thought it works as a nice interval between the two “sections” of this mix.

Kranz Trio – Din Da Da Da (NDV RMX/BLND)

NDV again – here with a bootleg blend/remix he’s done with a couple of cheeky  tracks  from the 80’s, somewhere between broken-beat & b-more,

Lil Mama – No Music (Starkey remix)

One of Starkey’s friendlier and bumpier remixes to date, quite different from the darker dubstep he’s been putting out lately, this one has a great bump and goes great in a variety of different contexts, anywhere from hip hop to electro..

The Go! Team – Doing it Right (Yo Majesty remix)

One of the remixes to Yo Majesty’s Kryptonite Pussy was among our biggest tunes of summer ‘07, but this remix for the Go! Team (always picking great remixers, btw) is totally far out, blending together so many different sounds and sounding like nothing else.

Martyn – All I Have is Memories

We wish more dubstep tracks will have in them as much innovation and musicianship as Martyn, sounding almost deep-house with those keys and the general vibe. Also worked quite good here as a bridge between the super-hectic Yo Majesty remix (so many drums going on there!) and the following…

Polar Pair ft Atlantis – This is What Happens (Mark Flash remix)

The original Polar Pair track that hosts Atlantis from Underground Resistance is more of a cut-up punk-funk affair, which Mark Flash from the UR camp has remixed into a totally classic Detroit sounding piece of music. Needless to say we’re so excited about this and eagerly waiting its proper vinyl release – more news regarding that early 2009.

Egg Foo Young – Up It

Proper club track from the so talented Egg Foo Young (aka Michna), which we’ve been following over the past few years and just recently released a great debut album on Ghoslty.

Sabbo – Babylon a Kill Dem

Sabbo is a quarter of Soulico crew – good friends of ours, which focus more on hip hop and dancehall but also share our general open-mind approach to music and DJing. Here’s a small sample of the tracks Sabbo has been doing over the past year and so – all very bass heavy dancefloor material, which hopefully will also be released early 2009.

Stush – Dollar Sign

This one has been around for a few years now, but thanks to the Heatwave crew and Soul Jazz records it got a good vinyl pressing earlier this year as part of their “An England Story” compilation – which is a treat all over. Anyway, Lady Stush is totally irresisteble, and Egozy has been dropping this track endlessly all year long.

Sunship ft Warrior Queen – Quits (Kalbata remix)

Our homie Kalbata did a remix to what was supposed to be the immediate follow-up to Sunship’s biggest smash over the past years, “Almighty Father”, but as Casual records sort of disappeared the whole release got lost in between until Sunship released the original just last week. Be on the lookout as this version should hit the blogsphere sometime soon.

Tawiah – Every Step (Zed Bias dub-rub)

Sooo much soul in a dubstep-ish track is quite untypical for that genre at the moment, and this remix by Mr Zed Bias is totally fabulous and has been sort of an end-of-the-night torch song for us, bringing this mix to it’s end.

Jackie Mittoo – Wall Street

But then we just thought we’d sneak this marvelous Jackie Mittoo piece – one of the most important reggae musicians ever, a perfect groove&melody for those moments before the club opens or after everyone’s gone… also quite fitting with all this Wall Street/economy crisis the whole world is freakin’ out about…

Peace&out

The Botanikats”
