Mixin’ It Up: Sta

Friday, May 9th, 2008

A Mixin’ It Up from Canada? You know that we can’t get enough of them. It’s Sta time!

Sta is Stu Freen, coming out of Toronto, Canada. After passing around some bootleg remixes in early 2007 (notably his rework of Timbaland’s “Give it to Me” and his take on the In Living Color theme song, aptly titled “In Living Colour”) he started getting some major attention. Since then he’s been hard at work in the lab, cranking out remixes for everyone from Hail Social to The Crystal Method. His first single for In Living Colour dropped in March on Adam Freeland’s label Marine Parade to good reviews and lots of plays. Check him out in Australia later this May, where he’s playing dates in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

TRACKLIST:

Fischerspooner - Danse En France
Love the intro in this track, but the rest of it is a bit slow for my tastes. The DIM remix is great.

Cut Copy - Lights and Music (Boys Noize remix)
The man kills it on this remix. He took the original which I liked a lot and made it perfect for the dance floor.

Boys Noize - Oh! (A-Trak remix)
I’m probably breaking some DJ rule by playing two Boys Noize tracks in a row but what can I say, they’re two of my favourite new tracks. I’m actually not too hot on a lot of his stuff but this remix is great.

Midfield General - Disco Sirens (Boy 8-Bit remix)
This remix has a great intro for mixing in, peaking with the sirens half a minute in. This whole remix is pretty sick actually, although the lyrics are a bit dumb.

Adam Freeland - Hate (Sta remix)
Working for the boss man on this one. This is a remix I’m doing for the Marine Parade guys and I’m really happy with how it came out.

Liquid - Sweet Harmony (Streetlife DJs mix)
I am in love with these guys right now. First got into their Cazals remix, and their Bodycrash mix is favourite of the bunch. Cut up, engergetic, attention-grabbing stuff. My only half-beef is that the tracks go so strong the whole way through that they’re hard to mix out of, so I have to make edits.

Poney Poney - Cross the Fader (Headman remix)
I don’t know what to say about this one, it’s just a solid track. Good vocals, nice beat, tight production etc.

Daisy Daisy - Michelle Plays Ping Pong (Vicarious Bliss remix)
This is a sexy song. It’s a couple of years old but I never heard it out much, which is a crime. The ping pong sound could be a bit cheesy but somehow it just makes things even better.

Underworld - Ring Road (Fake Blood remix)
I like how the intro of this fit into the last song, I use it kind of as a bridge here. Fake Blood is sick. Is he a famous producer’s pseudonym or some guy with a computer? Who cares.

Round Table Knights - Freak from Desire
My favourite track from the Eurogirls go to Baltimore comp. I’m a sucker for cheesy piano riffs, what can I say.

Kid Cudi - Day n’ Night (Jokers of the Scene remix)
My dudes from Ottawa. They’ve been KILLING it this past year. Go Jokers. People tend to play the Crookers remix of this song out because it’s more high energy, but this one is sick too.

Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya - Fuck Friend (Yuksek & Brodinski remix)
This is another under-played track. It’s super simple, but dope none the less. I like how the lyrics fit under the Kid Cudi track.

Ladyhawke - Back of the Van (Fred Falke remix)
Someone told me that Fred Falke and Alan Brax aren’t working together any more, which is too bad. But, if Falke is going to keep making tracks like this one and his last EP, I don’t really mind.

Sta - Stay
Here’s where I slow it down a bit. This is a new track I’m working on and am kind of feeling so far. Hip hop beats and big fat synths, how can you go wrong.

Les Rythmes Digital - About Funk
I had totally forgotten this song existed until I had a random brain flash last week. For some reason it just came into my head and I remembered how awesome it is. SDP doing his best Daft Punk impression, ’nuff
said.

Sebastian Tellier - Sexual Sportswear (SebastiAn remix)
I am feeling most of the new SebastiAn stuff a lot. “Dog” is the exception (it’s kind of shitty). I love that whole “Motor” EP though, and his Das Pop remix is really good too. This is really a SebastiAn song after he gets through with it, but I do like Sebastian Tellier a lot too.

Thanks Discobelle!

Mixin’ It Up: Stockholm Syndrome

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

This week’s Mixin it up comes from Stockholm Syndrome. Their remix of American Boy have been downloaded over 20.000 times so we know that you want more from them. Take it away boys:

When you guys first asked us to do a ‘Mixin It Up’ we began jotting down some tracks that have had real meaning over the years, right up to stuff we are listening to and are inspired by today. However, when the list started topping 80 tracks we knew this was going to be tough! So, we trimmed it down to 25 tracks. How? I’ll never know. It breaks my heart to leave out some of the tracks we left out, such is life I guess. Anyway, this mix really is a mixture; old and new. We’ve chucked in half a dozen of our own productions, two of which we did especially for this mix; “New Song” & “Make You Whole”. We certainly didn’t want to bang out an hour of current tracks, where’s the fun in that? It’s far more satisfying digging through the crates and finding some gems from yesteryear and then throwing it all together and seeing what happens…

TRACKLIST:

1. D-Train - Music
Title track from their second album. What would YOU do without music? I have no idea. James Williams has somewhat bizarrely gone on to become one of the leading voiceover men in the business, and you can hear him on an array of jingles, including; Army & Navy, Nescafe, Home Improvement & Got Milk. Lucrative, but odd!

2. Jermaine Jackson – Come To Me
B-side of an old 7” called ‘Sweetest Sweetest’. I thought his brother only made records that were this good?

3. Chic – I Want Your Love (Todd Terje Edit)
Just about the right amount of tinkering, less is most definitely more.

4. Daft Punk – Face To Face
Everybody knows the big Daft Punk records; this however, is our favourite. If anyone knows what the lyrics are or even the name of the record(s) they sampled (on this track), then please hit us up on our MySpace and let us know!

5. The Believers - Who Dares To Believe In Me?
Roy Davis Jr has made some great records (‘Gabriel’ arguably being his best), but this for me epitomises the early 90’s big room sound. First release on the ‘Sound of Ministry’ label and a true classic that has got me reminiscing about Todd Terry holding court in the main room.

6. Seven Grand Housing Authority – The Question
Gospel House from Detroit producer Terrence Parker.
Picked this up in ‘93 (on Olympic Records) and it lived in my box for years. The early 90’s spawned a million piano led House records, but this (and ‘The Believers’) really are timeless. Sends a shiver down my spine still.

7. Howard Jones – New Song (Stockholm Syndrome Remix)
I was a huge fan of this record and Jones debut album, ‘Humans Lib’. I used to go to bed dreaming one day I could own the Jupiter 8 synth on the front cover of the 12”! Colin Thurston who was, no doubt, a pioneer of the 80’ synth sound, produced the original. He engineered for David Bowie & Iggie Pop and produced various albums for The Human League, Duran Duran, Talk Talk & Gary Numan. It was an important record for me as a youngster (I was 11 when I bought it, 99p in WHSmith!), and thankfully Ollie was up for us re-working it. This version will probably never see the light of day, but we’ll definitely use it as a DJ tool.

8. The Whitest Boy Alive – Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)
We love French House, and were keen to include a few bits in this mix. The boy Falke nails this, simple as. This will still get played in ten years time. Vocal is a bit wack in places, but I guess sometimes you can’t have it both ways.

9. Chromeo – Needy Girl (Lifelike Remix)
Chromeo need no introduction and everybody knows ‘Needy Girl’. Lifelike takes the track up a few gears and this is a peaktime floor killer! Excellent remix.

10. Coach House Rhythm Section – Timewarp
Eddy Grant most definitely got out of the wrong side of his bed on the day he made this! ‘Timewarp’ was a record Louie Vega used to drop slap bang in the middle of a House set, and the boys over at The Paradise Garage were also big supporters. You just would not believe this was made in 1978!

11. Fragmenté – I See You
There is a good story to accompany this track, but I’ll save it for another time. Fragmenté is a project we are involved with along with some other peeps and we made this record a couple of weeks back. It’s received a good reaction from some friends we played it to, so we thought we would include it. We’ll drop a 12” soon and see where we go from there.

12. Metropolis – Metropolis
‘Future Sound Of London’, incognito.

13. Stockholm Syndrome - Quadrophonia
The Dutch were really on the money in the early ‘90s. Beltram’s ‘Energy Flash’ nearly made it into this mix and R&S was a fantastic label. This is a cheeky reworking of an old favourite, and a great DJ tool.

14. RAW - Asuca
This record took me about ten years of searching to locate and I never owned the vinyl until a few years back. (Imagine spending ten years searching for an MP3, it just wouldn’t happen would it!) When Discobelle invited us to do the mix this was the 1st track I wrote down, which is testimony to how much I love this record. Way before Subliminal and around the time of his Reel 2 Real project, ‘Asuca’ is one of Erick Morillo’s greatest productions.

15. Stockholm Syndrome – Make You Whole (Stockholm Syndrome Dub)
We only finished this yesterday! This will be our first proper release, later this year. More mixes to come.

16. Armand Van Helden – I Want Your Soul (Fake Blood Remix)
Had to include some AVH. I DJ’d with him in 2000 at Centrofly, NYC, and we used to be signed to the same label about 8 years ago. I love ‘Ultrafunkula’ and that nearly went on, as did ‘Witch Doktor’, but we settled on this. Fake Blood is on the money right now, and he blows this record apart.

17. Lil’ Mo Yin Yang – Reach
A Vega / Morillo collaboration and another big Strictly Rhythm release.
Based around an India vocal sample ‘Reach Out For Love’, this record never fails to smash the club up.

18. Kraak & Smaak – Squeeze Me
Oh my days, how good is Ben Westbeech on this?! Kraak & Smaak are turning heads; even Perez Hilton is a fan! Not sure about his appraisal though on this sounding like an Amy Winehouse / Moby soundclash…

19. The System – You’re In My System
When our good friend Mike Fielder found out we were doing a mix for Discobelle he was more than happy to hear we were including ‘The System’. “1982’s finest record. Revolutionary!” Covered by Robert Palmer (which made it popular), however this (the original) is the version to head for. David Frank (Producer / Keyboards) was way ahead of his time here, and he went on to write some amazing tracks with Omar which, sadly went under most people’s radar.

20. The Black Ghosts – Let’s Get Physical
Olivia Newton John’s ‘Physical’ was the most successful song on the Hot 100 during the entire decade of the 80’s. The video was immense; who remembers her blue and pink leotard? Calm down Peter… Anyway, Black Ghosts cover this, brilliantly.

21. Black Kids - Dance With You (The Twelves Remix)
I guess this is Disco that’s not Disco? Brasils finest, can The Twelves do no wrong? Ok, so your Mum dances around the room to this on Jools Holland, but we like it.

22. Boys Noize – Oh! (A-Trak Remix)
We love Boys Noize. In fact we love Germany. Kanye West’s beat commander remixes this to perfection. Easily one of the best records so far this year. Mint!

23. Stockholm Syndrome - DJ’s Take Control
Of all the records to come out of the early 90’s Rave Scene, this was one of the best. We borrowed the lead synth and mashed it up.

24. Estelle feat. Kanye West – American Boy (Stockholm Syndrome Dub)
I guess we remixed our own remix. Estelle and Kanye went through the shredder and according to Rolling Stone Magazine;
“In this remix, London R&B singer gets sliced, scattered, twisted and diced. Which, apparently, is also a way you can order eggs at a Waffle House.” Ha, thanks!

25. The Black Ghosts – Any Way (Fake Blood Remix)
Black Ghosts + Fake Blood = brilliant!

Mixin' It Up: Mike The 2600 King

Friday, April 25th, 2008

This weeks Mixin’ it up is from Mike The 2600 King. And the story goes a little something like this:

Starting off as a college radio DJ in St. Louis, Mike learned his way around a pair of turntables and began building his record collection, spinning at parties on campus and around the city. In 1999, he released “Yars’ Revenge,” a 4-track mixtape of funk breaks, scratch routines, and Black Sabbath and Sesame Street samples.

In the years to follow, Mike linked up with Doug Surreal, Bitch Ass Darius, and other St. Louis DJs to form the Litterthugz crew, with whom he spun at clubs, parties, and DJ battles around the Midwest, was twice nominated as St. Louis’ best hip hop DJ, and released the T.A.B.L.A.M.F.C.B. 12″, a barrage of cut-and-paste jeep beats, as well as a slew of acclaimed mix CDs including the funk and psychedelic workout “Heavy Session.”

Now residing in Minneapolis, Mike can be found cutting up funk, disco, classic hip hop, oldies, Miami Bass, and ’80s rock and R&B at parties and clubs around town, opening up for acts such as Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, The Rub, Spankrock, Atmosphere, DJ Steinski, and Prince Paul.

TRACKLIST:

Strawberry Alarm Clock “The World’s On Fire”
I used this track for my remix of Rick James’ “Give it to Me.” Awesome uptempo psych rock song from the group you might recognize as “the guys who did ‘Incense and Peppermints.’”

Doug Surreal & Mike the 2600 King “Give it to Me (remix pt. 2)”
I took the last few bars of my Rick James remix and sent them to my dude Doug, who added some keyboard parts and extra percussion. He sent it back and I extended the ESG vocal part and added the James Brown nuggets. It ended up kinda groovy. In 1999, Doug and I started a DJ and production crew in St. Louis called The Litterthugz with Bitch Ass Darius and a few other folks and now he’s living in a wigwam somewhere eating wheatgrass and drinking 808s.

Arcade Fire “Black Mirror (Mike 2600 Party Version)”
We (my design and screenprinting studio Burlesque of North America) design and print all of Arcade Fire’s tour posters and have done a few t-shirts and other tour graphics for them, so I thought I’d be totally sick of their music at this point, but I still really dig it. They’re great to see live in concert too. It’s like a Superbowl halftime show but with good music. When this acapella surfaced, I couldn’t resist doing a remix.

Santana “Mirage”
I extended the drums out of the end of the Arcade Fire remix and threw this great Santana song which I stole from my Dad’s music collection last time I was at my parents’ house. Hi Dad!

Mike the 2600 King “Rumble (Gettin’ it On)”
Big bass cut-and-paste number I whooped up and added a Big Daddy Kane acapella on top of. Rapp attack.

Eric B. & Rakim “Hypnotic”
This is one of those ‘unreleased’ songs that everyone probably has now since everyone has every song ever. Either way, Rakim is still probably the best rapper of all time.

Jermaine Jackson “Erucu”
From the “Mahogany” soundtrack. What a cut.

Breakout “Planet Funk”
B-side of their smash “Planet Rock” 12″ single on Melting Pot Music, one of my favorite new labels (and I’m not just saying that).

Yoko Ono “Walking on Thin Ice”
I overheard her performing at Pitchfork Music Festival last year and that shit sounded like 10 cats getting operated on by a blind, drunken veterinarian. Yo. Shit was not cool. I’m glad this song doesn’t sound like that.

Doug Surreal “Disco Sleaze”
Hopefully everyone will be on Doug’s jock after they hear this track. He did this one like 3 or 4 years ago. Stay tuned for the Motel Crew project.

Boney M “Felicidad”
I don’t think I’ve heard a Boney M song I don’t like.

TMS ft. Jimmy Graham “Get the Feelin’”
It’s like that perfect halfway point between disco and funk.

MSTRKRFT “The Looks”
This song and “Get the Feelin” go kinda really well together. It was outside of the MSTRKRFT show last October in San Francisco that Serg from beerandrap.com introduced me to bacon dogs. Shit yeah.

Ghosthustler “Busy Busy Busy (Prince Klassen Young Professional re-edit)”
My dude Klassen introduced us all to this great group out of Austin TX and served up this hot re-edit of their already hot song.

Chaka Khan “Fate”
Girls request Madonna. Women request Chaka.

Stardust “Music Sounds Better With You”
Congratulations to this song for its 1000th appearance in a mix for a blog! We did it!

Cougar Shuttle “Tow”
Wizard of electronic music, astro-physics genius, and casual mathematician, DJing with Cougar probably shaped the way I DJ more than any other individual ever. For real. This guy is a genius and this full-throttle acid song is just the tip of the iceberg of what dude is capable of doing.

Snowden “Kill the Power”
I think I saw my friend Mary wearing a Snowden button a few years ago but first heard this song on my friend Audrey’s radio show and was hooked, so this one is dedicated to both of them.

George Harrison “What is Life”
This is like the better version of “Got My Mind Set on You” from 10 or 20 years before. When is this song from? I don’t even know but I bet Google knows.

Grassroots “Wait a Million Years”
Oldies rock banger.

Mike the 2600 King “Fuck You Pay Me”
Boooyaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Pase Rock “Fingertips pt. 3.5″
This is my favorite song to transition from non-clubby bassy stuff into clubby bassy stuff. Stevie + handclaps + 808s + Lyn Collins drums. What else do you really need?

Say Wut “Futuristic”
This dude has the best formula for Baltimore club music and everything he makes it just nasty.

Bird Peterson “The Jump Off”
I love this guy. He can DJ for 2 hours while only spinning his own music and it’s all incredible. This song is available on the DO IT TO IT 12″ single our crew just released. You can learn more about the record at http://burlesquedesign.com

Egyptian Lover “I Cry (Every Night)”
EMO BASS!

Blondie “Call Me”
Girls request Madonna. Cool girls with tattoos request Blondie.

LCD Soundsystem “Daft Punk is Playing in My House”

Daft Punk “Human After All”
Do these really need an explanation?

Danzig “Mother (instrumental)”
Whoa, I’ve been into Danzig for almost 20 years. Still have my original Danzig I tape and I remember exactly where I was driving when my Lucifuge tape snapped… I was heading Southwestish on First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis with Aaron Horkey righ near the parking lot with the Greyhound station in it. I’m still kinda pissed about that.

Soulja Boy “Crank Dat Soulja Boy (acapella)”
You.

Dead Prez “Hip Hop (instrumental)”
Back in the St. Louis days, this one used to clear out the booths and fill up the floor more than any other song at our weekly Litterthugz club night.

Peter Bjorn & John “Young Folks (acapella)”
This one sounds really good over a half-time beat. Last summer, we had a Peter, Bjorn, and a John all working in our design studio at the same time. It was around the same time that this song was huge and it was totally hilarious. LOLZ.

Dawn Penn “No No No”
Special request for my lady.

Mixin’ It Up: Philadelphyinz

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Friday and Mixin’ it up! This time we asked Skinny Friedman and Apt One from the DJ duo Philadelphyinz to make the mix for us. They have divided the mix between each other so everything from the beginning through Tum Tum is by Skinny Friedman. Everything afterwards is Apt One. But before we let them start the mix you should visit their web page for tour dates (they will be on an US tour from April 12th - May 3rd), tracks, remixes and other tapes. Time for less talking and more mixing. Let me present Philadelphyinz!

Tussle - Pow!
I layer drums on everything so I’ve been playing out these Tussle tracks which are basically all drums a lot lately. This shit would have made me pop a boner during my drumline days in high school.

Jackie Chain f/ Jhi-Ali - Rollin (LOLZ ROYCE remix)
This insane remix is by Stumble and Ghost aka LOLZ ROYCE and has a grip of outer space sounds and china cymbals. This is what rave rap should really sound like.

LCD Soundsystem - Get Innocuous (Soulwax remix)
Nothing against the OG version but those evil Soulwax synths work a little better in the club.

Neon Neon - Raquel
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this track and with like a minute and a half of drums at the top it’s mad fun to spin. I originally dropped the acapella for Midnight Star’s “Midas Touch” over that drum breakdown but it didn’t really work.

Big Audio Dynamite - Hollywood Boulevard (Club Mix)
Produced by Sam Sever who is probably best known for doing a bunch of beats for 3rd Bass. Apparently he also did a remix for Live, which I now have to track down because what the fuck?

Holy Ghost! - Hold On
I am going to be so sick of this song in two months but right now I can’t play it enough. DFA does sentimental disco bangers better than anyone.

Ghostface - Charlie Brown (DJ Mehdi remix)
I remember this track leaking a few years back before Fishscale but with a murky MF Doom beat. I like this version better.

Tum Tum - Caprice Muzik (Skinny Friedman remix)
This was one of the first tracks clubbish tracks I ever made, before I was self-conscious about using the “Think” break. It’s kind of low energy but I like how it turned out.

DJ JJC - Machines Wanna Buck (Apt One’s Jive Blend)
JJC is a cat from West Philly who is experimenting with some new four on the floor stuff he’s calling Buck Buck. He’s also known for having the self-proclaimed “world’s worst record collection.” This is a little blend I did of one of his Buck Buck jams to give it that added “outer space” element for a classic electro feel.

M&G - When I Let You Down
Italo as a genre has a lot of deeply weird tracks, and it takes some work to get a dance floor to the point where you can throw something as weird as this out there and have it work. One of my goals when I DJ is to work a crowd to the point where I can play a track like this- something that is awesome but totally fucking bizarre, and have it work.

Escort vs. Eazy-E - Luv 4 Life
It’s ironic that the backing track here comes from a current band that makes throwback music, and the acapella I put over it comes from an emcee who is dead but still sounds ahead of his time. RIP Eazy.

Escort - Bright New Life
For a long time I’ve said that I’d start playing instrumental music again with a band only if I could play in a big disco, funk or soul band (or old time country orchestra). Escort is all over it. But this is truthfully like saying I’m only going to start playing basketball again if I can dunk, probably not gonna happen unless I wear special shoes.

Sinnamon - Thin Line
This single gets lost in the shuffle because Sinnamon was on Beckett and Jive for a while and this was the first single after they left. It’s on a little known label called Power House. Classic 80s NJ-NY-CT freestyle feel though- the sonic version of a tanning bed.

Charlie - Spacer Woman
This is an italo classic that most heads should know. Our good friend Lexie loves this song so much. All she wanted for her birthday a few years ago was a crispy 12″ copy. Her BF obliged and that record is more or less her dowry.

The Goodmen - Give It Up (Apt One’s Shake blend)
This track kind of defies description: it’s got some samba elements, it’s made by some dudes from Amsterdam and it’s most definitely a Jock Jam. There’s a frantic energy to this song that builds and dissipates a few times. I tossed a loop of Blaqstarr and Rye Rye’s “Shake It To The Ground” over the breakdown to give it some familiarity and some extra movement.

Twin Hype - Do It To The Crowd
Back in ‘89, east coast hip hop was just getting into the house sounds the midwest had been serving up and this was the quintessential street-wise house track out of Newark. Apparently, Twin Hype is back together. I don’t know if the twins still dress the same though. These guys are like the Sedin Brothers of Newark Hip House.

Architecture in Helsinki - Debbie (U-Tern Remix Instrumental)
I really admire U-Tern’s production chops- anybody with an ear for this stuff can tell that he doesn’t cut any corners, and he keeps it real classic. Honestly, I have no idea what the vocal version of this sounds like because I don’t like it when indie bands sing over my disco tracks.

Philadelphyinz - Pittsburgh Club Anthem
This is our tip of the cap to our hometown. It’s a remix of what I can only describe as a hilariously bad song- the Steelers fight song that gets redone every year with the names of current players. Skinny and I watched the Steelers shut out the Seahawks last season in a bar in New York the day after a gig and we were all fired up and laid this down. The funny little voice in there is Myron Cope, the Steelers’ long time announcer who recently died, he was like family to everybody in town. This song is dedicated to him. (You can download the track here (direct link).

Mixin’ It Up: White Girl Lust

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Two in a row! I guess you can say that we are back with Mixin’ It Up fo’ real. This time we asked White Girl Lust to make one. Take it away boys!

“Homeboys and girls gather ‘round and and listen to the tale of Solid Bump Records. WGL grew up in the West and spent our days listening to the sound that made the early 90’s so fresh out here. It started with what would turn into G-Funk and all it’s influences. Later we could be caught listening to mixtapes from the Wicked Crew and all the funky ass house that called upon disco breaks and deep bass. When we started the label we wanted it to sound like Above the Law instrumentals were being remixed to go on an early DJ Dan mixtape.

This mix is the perfect example of the label and the sound. It kicks off with some mid-tempo electro tinged funk and progresses up to what we think is the 2008 answer to this sound. At 30 minutes into the mix things are starting to pop pretty hard. By the time our new hero DreDay steps in the party – it is GAME OVER. Unfortunately we were unable to include some of the other awesome talent on the label such as Spoek from Sweat X, Cerebral Vortex, and Buddy Lezzle.

Go pop over to www.beatsource.com afterwards and buy the new West Coast Bump Remix EP featuring DJ Krames, Sir Nenis and DJ Pushups, Tactic, and DreDay. G’yeah!

1. Bonnie Pointer // Free Me From My Freedom (Extended Mix)
And we set it off with a perfect song for spring fever. Since our EP is a homage to the west it is fitting that Ms. Pointer is from Oakland. What other song do you know with a funky ass banjo – NONE. Huge props to DJ Alona for introducing this song to us.

2. Ciara // Goodies (B-Cause Whatnauts Renovation)
Edits are like assholes – everybody has one. B-Cause (also from the Bay) is one of the only people that has the taste and class to pull them off consistently. The blends are so simple but brilliant. He did this one long ago and it’s source vocal is completely played out but the blend totally keeps it fresh.

3. Indeep // The Record Keeps Spinning (12′ Mix)

4. Kleeer // Tonight

Although this band is from NYC they will always epitomize West Coast funk due to DJ Quik’s interpolation back in the day. This raw talk box makes Roger Troutman sound like a polished lounge singer – not that I am sayin’ that – this shit is just dirt dog.

5. Ray Parker Jr. // Just Havin’ Fun

6. DJ Quik // Mo’ Pussy
One of rap’s kings of thinly veiled homosexual lyrics comes with a ode to the female reproduction system. It’s sort of like your closeted gay buddy who keeps a ton of straight porn around on display. Yeah dude, you are not fooling anyone. Regardless, one of the funkiest rap producers of all time. His studio musicians were amazing.

7. Raydio // For Those Who Like To Groove
Yep, two Ray Parker Jr. tracks almost back to back. What can I say? Ghostbusters was a huge influence as a youngster. Anyone else notice how this sounds like “One Nation Under A Groove” part 2? This hot biscuit features Herbie Hancock on the synth. OUCH!

8. Mike Dunn // Phreaky MF (Edit Version)

9. S.O.S. Band // Take Your Time (White Girl Lust Edit)
Clay re-worked this classic FM radio jam into a smooth but simple edit.

10. Greens Keepers // The Color Pink

11. Talking Heads // Moon Rocks (White Girl Lust Edit)
“Flying saucers/ levitation/ … I can do that”… what a way to start a song. Funkiest white people EVER. WGL’s all time favorite band.

12. DJ Pierre & Marshall Jefferson // Clap Your Hands (Solsonik Dub)

13. The Dream // Fast Car
Sometimes if you are bombarded by a swarm of Beckys at the club requesting Prince you can play this instead. Then they request a Madonna/ ACDC mash up because it is their girlfriend’s birthday.

14. Jesus Jackson // Damn (Nova Project Rmx)
To me this sounds like if Pharrell did a jacking house song. Big up, Jesus.

15. Suzy Q // Tonight
This is one of those tracks you can play and get the dance floor poppin’ even though people don’t know what they are dancing to. Again – we totally swagger jacked this from DJ Alona.

16. Green Velvet // It’s Time 2 Jack
This is a more subdued version of “Shake and Pop”. I have never heard this played out and it makes me wonder why? Why!?!? Did Steve tell you that? STEVE!

17. White Girl Lust // Shake Your Body (Demo Version)
New as a new track can be and still be playable. Clay cooked this up while we were picking songs for this mix. Damn dude – nice move. Do I smell a new release coming?

18. Hijack // Possession
If I hear one more white person use the “Think” beat in a shitty B-More remix of a rock song there will be body bags filled with kids in fitted neon hats. Luckily this is a not an example of poor Lyn Collins usage.

19. White Girl Lust // Come On My Love (DJ Krames Rmx)
This is of our new remix EP on Solid Bump Records. Krames killed it!

20. Nicola Fasano & Pat Rich // 75 Brazil Street

21. Top Billin’ // Willin’
OMG. Seriously. Best new song around. This should be on Turntable Lab any day now!

22. DreDay // Chat Noir
As we said – the best new producer on the block. This dude has an insanely unique vibe and thus far every track we hear is amazing. This will be the next release on Solid Bump Records. WATCH THIS SPACE!

23. Dazz Band // Whip It (DreDay Rmx)

24. U-Tern // All That Cha Got
Even though this dude doesn’t respond to our inquiries about remixes we still ride for him. He also has an amazing song called “Kiss This” coming out soon. In the meantime go pick up part 2 of his Cookie Jar series, featuring his doo-doo fresh cover of “Sippin’ On Some Syrup”. Get at us homie!

25. White Girl Lust // Tail Light Bump (DreDay Rmx)
Dre totally took our track and owed it! This is also part of the new West Coast Bump Remix EP on Solid Bump. GO COP THAT!”

Mixin’ It Up: Royal Rumble

Friday, March 28th, 2008

After a few slow weeks of waiting for mixes from different DJs we are finally back with a new Mixin’ It Up. This time we head over to L.A and the trio known as Royal Rumble. Let’s leave it to them:

“We want to begin by saying that we should have started this mix out with the Classixx remix of “Buzzin” by Shwayze, but it just wasn’t flowing, being that it’s 93 BPM. Anyway, we’re Dan, Russ, and Kyle, and together we play music for people at parties under the name Royal Rumble. We also produce some music of our own, we throw a monthly party in Los Angeles with Classixx and Dan Oh called Hush Hush, and we throw a weekly all vinyl night called Sudden Death with DJ Pubes, Blu Jemz, and Cosmic Kids.

Making this mix was quite a task, but we knew we wanted to accomplish a couple of important things. We wanted the first 10 minutes to be comprised mainly of the type of music we have been playing at our new weekly, Sudden Death Disco. From there we wanted to gradually bring out the burners. If you want to know what we are all about right now, this is it. Other than that, we are just a few guys who hang out in our friend’s garage almost everyday.

1. The Whitest Boy Alive - 24K
DAN: This cover of Morgan Geist’s almost classic (is it old enough to be a classic?) is pretty slick. Its best if listened to with nice glass of wine.

2. Indeep - Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (Mirage Remix)
KYLE: I was sitting in my car listening to the Italians Do it Better compilation, “After Dark,” and soon as the track came on i knew i was in for something good. Then the grimey bassline dropped and instantly fell in loveee.

3. In Flagranti - Affective Placebo Effect
DAN: All of In Flagranti’s tracks sound so dirty. I think that’s why we love them.

4. Escort - Love in Indigo
KYLE: 20 something piece band, nuff said. I hope they come to LA some day.

5. Daniel Wang – Warped
KYLE: Whens the last time laser beams made you feel this fucking amazing? “Man, I wish music like this was playing while i was walking around 24/7″ – Nick Vic.

6. TEPR - Minuit Jacuzzi (Royal Rumble ext. intro edit)
RUSS: I really like this song. I think we have to say that this was our fire for a minute

7. Cut Copy - Lights Music (Boys Noize Happy Birthday Remix)
DAN: I didn’t really believe this was Boys Noize when I heard it. I’m always stoked to hear producers trying something new and nailing it. This remix is their “Face to Face. ”

8. C-Jay DJ 19 - Nethercutter (Aston Shuffle’s Dub Mix)
DAN: Aston Shuffle are very patient with their music. They like to save the dopest part for about 3 minutes into each of their tracks, almost always preceded by a long, windy, almost confusing breakdown. These guys are ridiculously talented.

9. Siriusmo - All The Girls (Tomboy Remix)
KYLE: Originally I was drawn to this track by its cover art. It’s even pressed on an appropriate clear red vinyl. Then you hear that vocal, “Get Get Get Get Get, GET DOWN”. Flood gates are now open with fire coming from every angle.

10. Kid Cudi - Day ‘n’ Nite (Crookers Remix)
RUSS: This song makes me think of coal workers that have to work all the time, so they sorta forget what time it is and sing about not getting ass or something.

11. Bass Kleph - Bump Uglies
DAN: Bouncey and heavy in the best way possible.

12. Scuola Furano - Saxada
RUSS: Silent Night turned me onto this dude. I’m a huge fan of Ace of Base.

13. Armand Van Helden - Playmate (Jesse Rose Remix)
RUSS: I’d really like to see a double dutch competition to this song that’d fucking kill it!

14. Aston Shuffle - For Everyone
DAN: I think this is their only original track floating around. Its way fun though.

15. Justus Köhncke - 2 After 909
DAN: In a way, I think we are paying tribute to Erlend Oye’s DJ Kicks by including this track. We were all listening to that mix a lot when we met, and hearing anything from it now is so nostaligic.

16. France Gall - Laisse Tomber Le Filles
RUSS: If you like April March or old snowboarding videos, you’ll like this.”

Download: Royal Rumble - Mixin it up 58 (zShare)

BONUS: They also sent us a new exclusive remix that they did for Big Moves. Can you tell that they been listening to a lot of Italo disco?

Mixin’ It Up: DJ EXCEL & MC ELIXIR

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I’m going to keep it short and then hand it over to this weeks contributor to Mixin It Up. Let’s present DJ EXCEL & MC ELIXIR from SKRATCH MAKANIKS / Philadelphia, Pistolvania. Take it away!

“Like many of you, I check Discobelle often. They always have good music, videos, & info. That’s what’s up!!! I noticed there was a segment titled Mixin It Up & they had dj’s who i knew, respected & the one’s i didn’t know always had good music. I wanted to be a part of those 56 dj’s… So thanks to Niklas for gettin back to me. I hope you guys enjoy the mix we put together. It ran a bit longer then they asked for, but once i started, i couldn’t find a good place to stop, until i did. We’re actually in Canada again… Playing @ Time Supper Club with dj’s Yo-C & A-Rock & with the Peer Pressure kids @ Coda. I was gonna wait until after we got back to make the mix but my boys, DJ Psychology (Oakley) & Leslie (WRGMag.com) are taken us snowboarding for the 1st time… so just in case something goes wrong & let’s hope not!!!, at least the mix is done!!!

Download DJ EXCEL & MC ELIXIR - ski-goggles r a must discobelle.net.

01. Q Project v. T of I - Champion Junglist (Jim Sharp Bmore Remix)
I love the horn sample in this song. I felt the way it started was the perfect intro for the mix. Like if the Army was about to storm the field, the horn dude would be blowin out this tune!!! The horns may be more familiar to some of you guys from the Shawty Lo - Dey Know joint. The chantin in the song & the “Before making records, the hood was my savior” set’s the tone for the mix!

02. Sat One f. MC Elixir - Bitches & Money
My partner Sat One is well known in the Underground Hip Hop world for making the ill tracks & his djin. He’s been working on a experimental project called Spooky Monkey, which is madness on herion!!! we were in the studio & the idea for this track came about. My MC Elixir heard it & had the verses in the cannon. So it came together & here it is. Freshly bounced from Logic to mp3 for you!

03. Digitalism - Pogo (Mano Remix)
This song just has a move behind it. Like it should be in a car commercial or someshit! Mano did a nice job on the remix tip & this stays in the rotation when I’m rockin. Make sure to check us both out in the current issue of Vapors Magazine.

04. Partyshank - Penis vs. Virgina (Shanks Killer Mix)
These dudes!!! Killer indeed. I love the verse. That & the drop outs hooked me on this one! The pic that’s attatched to mp3 is pretty fresh too! I had that green leaf sweatshirt homeboy is wearin!!!!

05. Thunderheist - Jerk It
I’m a Thunderheist fan!!!! No question!!! I was introduced to them for the during one of our trips to Canada. My homegirl Kenza took me to a Peer Pressure party, which was insane! Grahm & Isis are murder shit! All the joints i heard prior to this already made me a believer. But wen I heard this shit!!!!!! i was done! Kenza is the one who sent me this track! She’s the shit for that! 1 of my Top 10 joints to play. I don’t dance, but this shit makes me set off a lil 2 step bounce!

06. KRS One - Sound Of The Police (Krames Remix)
I got a thing for classic Hip Hop songs remixed. A lot of these songs get lost in the shuffle & some of the younger kids don’t know what they are. It’s sad… But when a brother like Krames flips it like he did, it gives the song a new life & makes people do the homework & find the original! I’m sure all the hip hop dj’s thank you for that this one pimp!

07. Timbaland - Miscommunication (Bloody Beetroots Remix)
I had the Timbaland LP mad early. I only heard a few songs I liked. At that time, this wasn’t one of them. It wasn’t until i heard this remix that made me actually give the original another listen & i actually like it! They freaked this one & its my favorite version of this song to play!

08. Blaqstarr f. Rye Rye - Shake It 2 The Ground (Hatchmatik Electrolux Club Mix)
Rye Rye got herself a nice buzz goin right now. Big ups to her for & Blaqstarr. The main reason why this song is on here is cause my homeboy Hatch is the shit!!! The same night i discovered Thunderheist, I met Hatch. We officially met again on another trip to Montreal. Great dude & his sound is solid! His remixes always crush shit… There was no way i could put this together & not include him! Keep bangin them shits out homey!

09. East Flatbush Projects - Tried By 12 (Excel 9mm Remix)
I was in LA in December working on some shit with my homie Revolution. While out there, i caught up wit my dudes, DJ’s Ammo & Ed Ski. We went to this gig & i heard a remix of this song done by DJ Spider. I wanted to put my own twist to it. This was a huge song for us on the east coast growin up. Big Up to East Flatbush & my dudes Spencer 4 Hire & Rusty Juxx!!! We need another Hip Hop classic fellas!

10. Steve Angello & Laidback Luke - Be (Laidback Luke Remix)
I hear Robin S - Show Me Love all day when the melody hits & the vocals start running!! This causes a nice frenzy in the club when the chicks, “booties start shakin & movin all around”

11. DJ Riz - Bring That Beat Back
This guy!!! just put the hot sauce on the fried chicken!!!!

12. Yelle - Tristesse Joie (Rolf Honey Remix)
Her voice on this song just plays over & over in my head at random times during the day. I love how they reworked this joint. When this hits, dancing is a must!

13. Armand Van Heldan - I Want Your Soul (Fake Blood Remix)
One of my favorite house producers. I love the funk & bboy swagger he puts into the remixes. From the early days, Armand always had a track i kept in the crates. Now the Fake Blood dudes, just took a dope song & put it on another planet far far away! They use the chops like instruments & play them in melodic fashion! You gotta put this on from the beginning & let it take off! Its like 0-6000mph in 30sec.
“Please fasten your belts & keep all arms & legs in the rocket ship”

14. Pase Rock f. Amanda Blank & Spank Rock - Lindsay Lohan
There’s a few remixes i really dig of this song, but with all the remixes i have on this mix, I wanted to use the original version. Spank, Pase, & Amanda, been killin shit for some time now. Plus i love the statement! “Why are you showin them coochie lips, gettin up out the car”?

15. Enur f. Natasha vs. Wing Wang Twins - Bmore Calabria
One of the biggest songs of last year. Still huge this year. Those horns are another sample that wont stop playin in my head! As a DJ, you gotta love when throw this on & the beat drops out & the horns play! It drives people crazy & the reaction is massive!!! I get down with this bmore version, the shuffle it has is monster!!!!

16. Justice - We Are Your Friends (Scottie B Bmore Remix)
What more can I say about these guys that hasn’t been said. Magical. Talented, etc. I was introduced to them through my ace, DJ Botany 500 @ Cue Records. He put me on to some thing major, thank you big homie & big Up to Scottie B, this gets much play!

17. Jean Nipon - You Call It Love (Eurogirls Go 2 Bmore)
I got into bmore house many years ago, when i was playing college parties. Being from philly, a majority of the college kids are from different areas. At the parties i would do, most of them were from the DC, Maryland, & the southern states. So Bmore & Go Go were a must have. Bmore was cool, but for me, i felt it was limited to certain types of parties. It wasn’t until i heard other types of music freaked in Bmore fashion that i was able to incorporate it more in my sets. It was then i became a bigger fan of that style & its been dominating dance floors for a while now. Shouts to Rod Lee, Technics, all the originators & the cats who’ve been inspired by them to create great remixes!

18. Feist - 1, 2, 3, 4 (My Gay Husband Remix)
Really dope song. MGH put a nice twist on it. & i get a dumb laugh about having a song on my serato that says “MY GAY HUSBAND REMIX” haha! Awesome name!!!!

19. Buddy Akai - Cut Me Up (Villians Remix)
There’s not much for me to say here. I dig the song & the Villians remixed the shit just right! Electro-rock, Rock On!!Nuff said.

20. Martijn Ten Velden - I Wish You Would
The hook got me. It’s catchy… simple. The girls love it. It’s a no brainer.

21. M.I.A - Bamboo Banga
1 of my favorite song on the LP. “MIA comin back with the power, power”!!!

22. Feadz - Numanoid (Edit)
“Feadz is hookin up the beats” Pop The Glock!!! Booohhh!

23. Duke Dumont - Pop Dat Poosay
This dude is on some next shit! Or he’s on some really good drugs! As if Uncle Luke didn’t kill shit himself.. Uncle Duke put together the precise example of how to make the dope, doper! Blue Magic type shit!!!

24. Blaqstarr - All The Girls Around The World (Klever So So Death Remix)
Everything Klever remixes is crazy! A true thorough bread DJ with a great sound. Another brother I had to include in the mix. Keep doin it the way u been pimp!

25. Kylie Minogue - Wow (MSTRKRFT Remix)
Mstrkrft created a sound that you can’t deny is electrifying. They have a catalog of remixes & all of them are bangin! Now Kylie was hot back in the day. Then the flame sizzled out a bit… But there’s been a grip of remixes of her joints & dudes like LA Riots, The Twelves & Mstrkrft made her explosive, not to mention she’s still a fly lil number! I think its a proper ending for the mix…

or maybe not….

26. Feist - My Moon, My Man (Boyz Noize Remix)
The homie A-Rock played this Thursday & again on Friday. I was fucked up!!! This shit is insane! Like gives me a chill & i twist my face up insane. DJ’s & music lovers know that feeling. The mix was done, bounced to mp3 & ready to send.. i know its not the newest song, but after hearing it again friday I knew it wasn’t complete with out it. I had to go back & add it.. Her voice being so subtle & the track being so fucking hard is deadly! By far one of the illest joints I’ve heard Boyz Noise remix! Thus the perfect ending! Super gas face, middle finger to Boyz Noise!!! You made this shit unfuckwitable!!!”

Mixin’ It Up: DJ Neoteric

Friday, January 4th, 2008

We’re gonna be in Oslo tonight (check a blurb here) but here’s a Mixin’ It Up from Vancouvers very own DJ Neoteric that’s filled to the brink with canadian goodness. Let’s read what he has to say about it:

“Hey Young World,

Here’s my “Mixin It Up”. I’m into all kinds of music, so I wanted the tracklist to reflect that. It’s quite eclectic, perhaps to a fault, but i think there’s something on here for everyone.

Thanks to Discobelle for having me, and thanks to everyone who hit me with tracks. There’s alot of Canadian content on here, I tried to showcase some of the incredible talent we have in this country. Big ups to everyone who checks out this mix, and please be sure to hit up my website and add me on MySpace or Facebook, and if you’re making tracks or edits, send them my way! Brrraaappp!!!

* Denotes Canadian Content

01. King Polo - Acid Shack *

The perfect way to start the party. King Polo is the homie from Vancouver, check for him.

02. VNDLSM - Every Woman (1nder Edit) *

These guys are KILLIN it! Get your back up of the wall!

03. Dead Prez - Warzone (Ass in the Club Remix)

I’m not certain, but I think I read this was a Spank Rock remix, but regardless, its bangin, and the vocals match the aggressive electro banger perfectly.

04. Mat The Alien - Digitalism Who Looka Here *

This right here is some funky shit. My boy Mat the Alien is one of the best DJs I have ever seen, and his edits are top notch. Big Up Mat! He’s helped me alot of the years, its truly an honor.

05. U-Tern - Kiss This *

New U-tern!! By now you know dude is KILLING everything he touches. I’ve had the pleasure of working with him on tracks, and I’ve never seen anyone so good at what they do. Truly inspirational, and I’m certain he’s destined for big things. This disco banger is off the fuckin chain!

06. Wax Romeo - Synthy Disco *

Have you heard of Wax Romeo? Haha. Im sure this isnt the real name of the song. When I first got ‘Laura Winslow’ from the dope Neighbourhood Romeo EP, it was called ‘Marge Schotts Titties’ or somethin. Gross!

07. Kid Cudi - Day and Night (Jokers of the Scene Extended Remix) *

Some other Canadians makin big noise. This is such a beautiful remix. Big ups to JOTS and Fools Gold!!

08. Krames - Fuck Them Bitches

Krames makes some of my favourite edits, and this one is no exception. I know Kelis is being mean here, but it sounds like “hot” to me.

09. Sleazy V - On Your Knees *

10. High Powered Boys ft Ludacris - Hoes Get Down (DJ Amen Re-edit)

See what happened here? Poetic! DJ Amen adds my favourite vocal from the last Ludacris album to this. I digs it.

11. K7 & Sammy Bananas - Come Baby Come

The original of this is classic, but I love the way Sammy sped it up and updated for the 2 Double Oh 8.

12. Smalltown DJs - Smack a Badman *

These guys are Canadian too, and damn good DJs! Hot track.

13. DJ Spen presents Jasper Street Company - Solid Ground (Doo Dew Solid Mix)

I like rice. Rice is great when you’re hungry and you want 2,000 of something.

14. DJ Technics - Lets Go
15. DJ Phinesse - Crazy Hype
16. Kazey - Play Me Sexy
17. Say Wut - Some Action
18. KW Griff - Yall Aint Safe
19. JCW - Get Shot

This is the super hype crazy horns and gunshot section. Nuff Said!

20. Chubby Fingers - Droppin Pianos

Instructional ass-shakin music. Can’t go wrong.

21. Scott Matelic - Grapevine

It’s a trip to see former Anticon producers makin club tracks! This classic gets a nice retouch.

22. Van Morrison - Gloooria (Murge Refix) *

My boy Murge added some kick to this track

22. MSTRKRFT - She’s Good For Business *

So so funky, I’m hyped for the new record, this one just fell into the ‘happy bootyshakin music’ category

23. Lady Tigra - Bass on the Bottom (Justin Kase Edddit)

‘Let Your Body Move, and let your spirit free’…Good advice.

24. Cousin Cole - Gyrate Remix

Somewhat slept on remix from one of my favourite producers. Cousin Cole murders everything he touches. I love the pounding drums in this track

25. Nate Dogg - All the Girls Get Up (Mr. Andersonic Remix)

I have no idea why I don’t hear this more often. A Nate Dogg dance track? Game overrr. The Bassline is great too, it pounds in the club.

26. DJ Tanner - Pop Lock and Bang It *

My boy Tanner from the Faction Sound crew laced that AC Slater track ‘Banger’ with Pop Lock and Drop it, to great results. We do some 4 turntable party rockin shit that’s really fun. Make sure you check out his latest mixtape with Toronto’s 4Korners HERE (link to: http://www.zshare.net/download/5613657e2e1c6d/ )

27. The Knish Hit Squad - Your Body

Mike B makes dope edits, and this one is no exception!

28. Len - Hot Rod Monster Jam

This is some slept on heat! My boy Moves, who’s part of my crew the Party Killahs was in this group and toured the world off the strength of that hit “Steal My Sunshine”. Remember that? It actually was about doin’ acid. This album also had Biz Markie, Mr Dibbs, Buck 65 and others on it, and their 2nd album was executive produced by Divine Styler! Big ups to the Len Crew!

29. Fast Eddie & Funky J - Big Ol Booty

Say Yeah!

30. U-Tern - Look At That Booty *

More new U-Tern! This is a Bangers and Cash remix from the Cookie Jar Vol. 2, which should be out in the next month or so. Shit is 100% awesome.

31. Busy P - Chop Suey

Electro Booty madness

32. Kilo - America Has a Problem

I used to spend the weekends at my Dads place in Rodney, Ontario, where I was born (Population: 500). It was about an hour away from Detroit, and we’d get the faintest signals from the Michigan radio stations. I’d spend the whole weekend trying to hear these amazing tracks which were never played around my parts. I think it was ‘92 or ‘93 when this song dropped, and it was huuuge. For years I had no idea who it was, and searched it out with only the hook as a reference. Finally about 3 years ago my boy Moves found this album and made my life!

33. Andre Nickatina - Ayo for Yayo

I’m a sucker for a theme. (This is the Cocaine Section in case that wasn’t apparent). Classic!

34. Eddie Murphy - Party All the Time (Klever Remix)

Rick James wrote this….it’s one hell of a remix

35. Debbie Harry - Rush Rush (Neoteric & Matty C rough Edit) *

This is just a start to an edit we were working on, but we didn’t have time to properly finish it. It serves its purpose though. It’ll be much different.

36. DJ Sega - Bodies Hit the Floor (Hollertronix)

On snap! From the upcoming Hollertronix 12″, this shit is bonkers! He even manages to flip Papa Roach’s ‘Last Resort’ into a club banger. DJ Sega = The Truth!

37. Knowself - Why I’m Like This *

This dude got locked up for robbing 5 banks in Nova Scotia. He used to take part in testing experimental drugs for money, which isn’t really a good look. Anyways, he’s got albums of the most wigged out conspiracy rap ever and some crazy flows, but this is the one and ONLY beat he’s ever made, and its great. A fitting outro.

Mixin’ It Up: HATCHMATIK

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Time for the last Mixin’ It Up of the year. This time we visit Hatchmatik from Montreal and the Peer Pressure Crew. We have played his remixes out on the dancefloor all year long so we were very happy when he agreed to do a Mixin’ It Up. Lets get started!

Download Hatchmatik - Mixin’ It Up for Discobelle (zShare)

1. The Tough Alliance – Something Special (Alfie Special Summer Mix)

The Tough Alliance is an amazing group, one of my favorite pop acts. North sent me this and it has been one of my favorite tracks since the first time I heard it – it’s just so happy and bangin’ – seemed like a perfect way to start.

2. DJ Tameil – Bump Like This

The homey E6 in Chicago put me onto this track – Tameil kills it as usual and well that’s all there is to it.

3. Sebastien Grainger – When U Go Out (Mercurius FM Disco Love Mix)

This is one that has been in a lot of my sets since last summer, I picked a lot of the tracks for this mix from the folder I made just before I went out on tour. This is another song much like The Tough Alliance song that always has me singing along jumping around like a fool in the club (or in my room)

4. Chromeo – Bonafied Lovin’ (Hatchmatik Remix Ft. Teki Latex)

I got the parts for this remix about 5 months before I actually got down to it. Once Teki and I decided to work together on a track, I finally got my ass in gear and started going on this. He dropped an awesome verse for me and helped me make this a track I’m really proud of. We also recorded a Quebecois ode to Fatman Scoop (Frenchman Scoop) that will be out shortly.

5. Yelle – Tristesse Jolie (Rolf Honey Remix)

We were lucky enough to have Yelle headline a show for us at Pop Montreal in the fall and I gotta say she fuckin’ killed it. Her live show (with TEPR and Grand Marnier) was the best of the whole festival hands down. This one always sets it off in the club.

6. DJ Pushups & Sir Nenis – U Don’t Know Me Remix

The Top Billin guys bring some serious heat on this Armand Van Helden remix. Out soon if not already on T&A Records. They are really nice dudes and always come with some serious club bangers.

7. Timbaland – Miscommunication (Bloody Beetroots Remix)

Italy killing it! And those masks! This track has been a serious favorite of mine and definitely one of my top songs for 2007.

8. Omnikrom Ft. Numero (Hatchmatik Club Remix)

You should all know by now, but if you don’t, Omnikrom is a group here in Montreal and they are running that Quebecois crunk shit. Check for their album son! TROP BANANE! With that Numero pop flavor this track bangs hard bee!

9. Kap10Kurt – Dangerseekers (Rolf Honey Remix – Hatch Edit)

This song is really NUNKY!

10. Duke Dumont – Pop Dat Pussy

Duke Dumont is a beast! I’m so glad he’s on Turbo. Dude is killing the club with this one – DOO DOO BROWN!

11. Ocelot – Our Time

Franki Chan linked me this and I must say I’m loving this shit. The vocals are amazing and the whole vibe of the song really sends me. Check for Ocelot in 2008 they are making amazing music.

12. Krames – What More Time

Daft Punk had a huge year – best live show I’ve ever seen – I know everyone says that but it’s true the shit is an epic vector seismic brodown sesh to your mind. My man Krames is killing the game right now putting out hot track after hot track like a mad man. Montreal has crazy love for Cobra Kai, Krames and Nick the Duke showed us some real southern fried flavor down in VA two summers back.

13. Justice – Phantom II (Boys Noize Remix)

Justice! Never heard of them but this song is pretty okay.

14. Mike Mumbles – WutWut pt. 3

The homey Dave Nada put me onto this track, dude is a triceratops with hulk talons in the club!

15. Hatchmatik – Gate 14 (2nd Bounce)

Maybe not a final version of the song, but this is an original track I was messing with lately.

16. Hatchmatik – Ghislain Poirier / Binaerpilot Blend

The keys in that Binaerpilot track are so insane and made me think of the classical moog stylings of Walter Carlos or the music from the scene where Alex links those girls at the record shop for a ménage in A Clockwork Orange. Ghislain sent me the acapella for his latest single and they worked well together so there it is !

BOOMSIE SHOT!

Mixin’ It Up: mike ill

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

This weeks Mixin’ It Up is from LA’s mike ill (http://keepinitright.com/). It’s got a nice soulful feel to it. Over to mike ill:

“Hi. My name is Mike, and I’m an alcoholic. I did this mix in one take and I was drunk. That’s my imaginary excuse for my jacked up equipment and some loose blends. Whatever. I’ll just leave it at that. However this selection is superbly excellent. Doing this set I picked the first three songs and then recorded it live. ‘Feeling’ was more important to me than technical skill in this case. Although both would be ideal. This mix has an old school sort of sound throughout most of it, yet you’ll notice from the track list that there are newer artists on it as well. I tried to bring together old heads and young kids on this, and I think it worked out well. I feel it is important in my life to bring people together. Kinda like a Star Trek convention. However I won’t bore you with that cheesy talk. That’s why I made sure this mix is fun. It’s like a happy machine one might say. In any case maybe I bit off a little more than I can chew with this attempt, but I guess I’ll leave that for you to decide. Now off we go. listen!

“Sunshower” by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band

A lot of people will recognize this song from the M.I.A. track, “Sunshowers.” It’s a great track from a disco sorta band which has been also sampled by other popular Hip Hop artists.

“Second Time Around” by Shalamar

“Second Time Around” popped up on my iTunes random mode and was the partial inspiration to this mix.

“Tenderoni (hidden album cut)” by Chromeo

This is where I sprinkle in some newness but keep an old sound. The first time I heard Chromeo I really loved the sound.

“Promise (Siik Remix)” by Ciara

Siik comes with some smoothass refixes so I had to include this. I played this song in my car constantly around this time last year.

“Fannypack Nu Nu Yeah Yeah Remix” by Krazy Fiesta/Jo-han & Erik HP

This song is SO fun.

“Saturday Love” by Cherelle & Alexander O’Neal

The first time I heard this song I was probably in the 8th grade and I heard it on a mixtape by DJ Icy Ice, who is one of the greatest pioneers in LA hip hop DJ history. No joke. Hearing that mix was the first time I ever felt that I wanted to DJ.

“Get Up (b.cause kashif home stretch edit)” by Ciara

I know I played a Ciara song already, but this just fit. I’m sure peeps who read Discobelle know how nice B.Cause comes with it on this edit.

“100%” by Chromeo

Once again, I really like Chromeo. I especially like the part of this song that goes, “Girl if it’s alright.” It reminds me of that Montell Jordan song, “Get It On Tonight.”

“Carribean Queen (No More Love On The Run)” by Billy Ocean

I’ve been holding onto the instrumental to this forever and have been waiting for just this opportunity to play it. Plus, there’s a saxophone on it. kind of like the previous Chromeo song so it fit. It also has this crazy sound like a tiger growling or something.

“I Love Only You” by The Popular Peoples Front

I don’t think there really is a need to explain how awesome this song is.

“Do It Any Way You Wanna” by People’s Choice

I played Popular Peoples Front prior so I figured why not play People’s Choice next. Plus this beat is so driving and the dude is telling me to do it any way I wanna.

“How Long” by Ace

This is a little bit of a change in the sound from this mix, and the beginning of a new section. The song is within the time period though. My uncles would love this one.

“Shake It To The Ground (Pistol Pete Remix)” by DJ Blaqstarr

My most favorite song to mix. I might even go so far as to say, my most favorite song to mix ever. So choice.

“Shopping On The Dancefloor (Krames Remix)” by Purple Crush

A 90s sound which I’m really feeling right now. Purple Crush has been kiltin’ the blogosphere.

“The Love That I Crave (Luvtek Edit)” The Blow vs Strategy Strata

Luvtek makes some dope edits with a sensibility that I’m really feeling. I also really like The Blow. My homie ‘Marks’ introduced me to The Blow.

“Beeper” by Sinden & Count of Monte Cristal

I’m sure Discobelle readers know this one.

“Yeah Yeah (Flosstradamus Remix)” by Matt & Kim

The last song had a bass kick that reminded me of this song. Plus I have some friends who like this song so I wanted to play it for them. Hey guys.

“Shawty Is A Ten (Mano Remix)” The Dream x Mano

I found this song on Discobelle! This track is SO dope. The choppiness isn’t overwhleming. Sometimes I feel like too many effects ruin a song, but this is done really well. The changes are dope too. Mano’s got skill.

“My Beau” by Daedelus

A whimsical take on a old favorite.

The end. Thanks for reading and thanks Discobelle!”
