“The mix is 1 hour and 45 minutes in total and the selection has a new wavey vibe to it: some of the tracks are obscure enough to be called minimal wave now, some are true classics of the early video era. Me I just like to think of them all as cool 80’s jams that you can’t not like.”

He has also made a name for himself as a dj and has also been throwing parties in Dartmouth College were he brought in folks like Jubilee, DStar, Villains, Dani Deahl, Yes Giantess, Fashen, etc. But now he is all yours with this weeks Mixin’ It Up.

Download Friendly Greg – Mixin it up for Discobelle

1. Round Table Knights – “Belly Dance (Mowgli Remix)”

“Belly Dance” is the first Round Table Knights song I ever fell in love with. However, it was the Mowgli remix of the aforementioned song that really blew me away. The percussion is wildly energizing despite being relatively simple and soft, which has made this one of my most used tracks during opening sets.

2. Camel – “Zig Zag”

“Zig Zag” is another sneaky track that gets people dancing frantically even though the song itself is pretty tame. It may be be the repetitive vocals. Perhaps it’s the uniqueness of the instrumental. I honestly have no idea what makes this tune so effective. What I do know is that this is yet another one of my favorite opening tracks.

3. Round Table Knights – “Calypso”

And here I return to Round Table Knights. Though “Belly Dance” was my first love, “Calypso” is my one true love. It amazes me how a track that’s seemingly so simple simultaneously has so much going on. Everything from the claps to the chants of “woo” plays a necessary part in making this is a seriously fun track.

4. French Fries – “Predador (Original Mix)”

Next up is an original from one of my favorite producers in the game: French Fries. Though it’s generally his percussion that kills me, the horns on this cut are what really get me going.

5. French Fries – “Senta (Original Mix)”

Though it may be a bad habit, I pretty consistently mix French Fries tracks back-to-back. The dude’s killing it right now, and one song simply isn’t enough. Here’s it’s the vocals that really move things along.

6. Dooze Jackers – “Got Line!”

“Got Line!” steps up the energy level with its high-pitched instrumental, shouted vocals, and considerable builds and drops. The name Dooze Jackers may baffle me to no end, but there’s nothing even remotely unclear about how much I love this track.

7. Zombies for Money – “Numbra One”

“Numbra One” is almost too obvious here, but that’s fine by me. Little changes musically when transitioning from “Got Line!” to “Numbra One” – the songs have a similar sound and energy level – yet the transition is indescribably invigorating.

8. Silvio Ecomo and Chuckie – “Moombah (Afrojack Remix)”

The Afrojack remix of “Moombah” may be another obvious choice, but once again I simply don’t care. This song knocks – don’t try to tell me otherwise. The cries of “turn up the bass” make crowds go crazy – just ask Dave Nada.

9. Afrojack – “Bangduck (Original Mix)”

A grip of people hate on “Bangduck” for being a “Bangkok” ripoff. Yes, “Bangkok” came first. And yes, they’re incredibly similar. Still, the borderline cheesy introductory moments of “Bangduck” rile me up in the best of ways. “Bangkok” is fabulous, but “Bangduck” is my go-to.

10. DJ Bam Bam and Mr. Robotic – “Watch the Club Go”

“Watch the Club Go” is a track I’ve had success sneaking into sets for Top 40-lovers. Most people act like sheep on the dance floor – one person hears the vocalist shout “let’s go,” gets pumped, and the rest of the room follows suit.

11. DJ Jean – “New Dutch Shuffle”

It took me quite some time to believe that the DJ Jean that produced “New Dutch Shuffle” was in fact the same DJ Jean that’s responsible for “The Launch.” But honestly, it makes sense – “The Launch” was a super influential song and “New Dutch Shuffle” is a surefire hit at almost any club.

12. DirtyBeats – “Alone in the Jungle (Tom Piper Remix)”

Words can describe neither why nor how much I love this song. If music could have A.D.H.D. it would sound like this. Which, of course, is a good thing.

13. NT89 – “Pumpin (Feat. Distrakt) (Beataucue Remix)”

My friend once described Beataucue’s tracks as “music that only sounds good when you’re wasted at three in the morning.” I, on the other hand, listen to Beataucue when I study in the library. This may or may not be part of the reason that I’ll go deaf before I hit my midlife crisis.

14. U-Tern “Style, Class, Flair”

The mix takes a huge turn here by moving from the fast, loud Beataucue to the silky smooth U-Tern. I respect the gent’s taste more than you’d ever believe, and his production is on point as well. U-Tern’s latest track is an absolute standout, and there was no way I was gonna leave it out of this mix.

15. Justin Faust – “Holdin’ On”

It all comes to a close with what’s quite possibly my favorite tune of the moment: “Holdin’ On.” I rarely DJ parties frequented by the type of folks that go out looking to hear a Justin Faust track, so I play a few hours of whatever it is they want to hear, then wrap things up with this poppy disco house gem. By that time they’re too drunk to complain that I’m not playing LMFAO or Drake. They can thank me later.

Friday and you know what that means, another edition in our Mixin’ It Up series. Today we have a stunning mix courtesy of German techno/house producer/dj Adam Port. We know that you’re gonna enjoy this one so cut to the chase and hand it over to Adam:

“Techno’s biggest flaw is its self-referencial tendency. You know the deal, the common contemporary DJ/Producer steals an Underground Resistance-record from his older brother at the age of 16 (biographical details may vary, not to impair the facts, though), thus presuming to have found the holy grail (what, of course, nobody is claiming to deny). His world is shrinking down to Detroit, Chicago, New York and Berlin within the following years, he’ll equip himself with records and turntables and not look over the rim of his MKII ever again. Adam Ports biography is different. Adam was Hardcore, when he was 16. No, not Rotterdam-Hardcore. We’re talking New York-, Boston- and Washington D.C.-Hardcore here. It’s a past that he still lives up to, cultivating it in his vegetarian-straight-edge-lifestyle. After that there was HipHop. He got in touch with turntablism, discovered his love for vinyl and evolved to be a skilled DJ for the first time. Then, finally came Techno. This way of tracing down spaces, giving one the best possible chance of self-development, is the essential reason for Ports presence being so unique. There’s no scene-dictated tunnel view in his activities, there is only a pointed emphasis on style, on groove and sophistication. An emphasis, that, because it’s informed by Dub, Danchall, Rap, Soul or even Psychedelic Rock, is advanced enough to always shine through the inflationary characteristic of the genre as notably original. That applies to both, his productions and his DJ-sets. What Adam Port is laying his hands on might have its place within the parameters of House and Techno, but it’s always more than that. It’s his style.

1. Adam Port – The American Dream / Unreleased

It’s always like this. The last track that i made is always my favorite one. “The American Dream” is brand new and the name for it sent me a friend via Skype yesterday (Thanks Kathi!).

2. Dennis Ferrer & Jerome Sydenham – Timbuktu (Pan-African Electro Beats)

Great loopy, tribe sound!! No vocals, no bassline just pure kick and fills. Very hypnotic thing. Love it!

3. Mutant Clan – Taling Deep / Unreleased

A new joint of my homeboys Timo Maas & Santos aka Mutant Clan. Unreleased and hot! Heard it the first time in a dj set of Alex Dolby and it was like “WOWWWW!! Who made this one?!”. A wundefull groove.

4. Matthew Dear & Seth Troxler – Hurt (Martinez Dark Soul Remix)

The original was already huge but a little bit difficult to fit into my set. This remix is easier to handle but still dope!

5. Adam Port & Santé – Faire Des Siennes / Rockets & Ponies

Here’s one track that i made with my partner in crime Santé! It will be released in the next two months on Rockt & Ponies. Madddddnnneeesss!!

6. Deniz Kurtel – Yeah feat. Guest Of Nature (Original Mix)

Deniz Kurtel. A new girl on my techno radar. Played her remix for No Regular Play a lot and like also the new joint. The vocals are a sureshot!

7. Adam Port – No Pain / Keinemusik

No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain. No pain…. and i feel no pain.

8. MRI – Lipsy Fieber

This one is a track the &Me plays a lot and i always ask him: “Dude! Who is it?!” and he always answerded: “MRI !!!!”. Now i got it. Now i bought it!

9. Daniela Stickroth – Backtalk / Meeresfief

Dark techno thing! Feel it! Suported it a lot on facbook and twitter. Berghain sound inna house! Big up Daniela.”

Mix number 100!

We’ve come a long way since those baby steps 3 years ago. For this mix, Dubbel Dutch who is certainly one of the most exciting producers out there at the moment rips it up with an all out awesome mix.

“Born and raised in New York I’m a DJ/producer now based in Austin, Texas. I’m kind of a dance music geek with aspirations to make music in just about every style, but for now I’m focused on the left-field sub bass heavy mutated funky sounds originating out of the U.K. For this mix I decided to incorporate a number of North American producers doing big things at the moment. You will also find that the beginning of the first song is placed at the end of the mix as it’s designed to be burned to CD and listened to continuously. Hoping that in 2010 club music boundaries will loosen up even further and DJs will continue to challenge the dance floor.”

4 Hero – Humans

This track sounds like it could be a recent Ikonika tune but it’s actually from 1998. Beautiful melodic synths and a “future garage” beat from the past. Parallels a lot of the sounds cycling around at the moment so I thought it would be a good palate cleanser.

HEALTH – DEATH+ [Darling Farah Mix]

Originally from Detroit, Darling Farah is an extremely talented young producer now living in the U.A.E. I’m really proud since I’ve watched him go from having no releases to this official remix for HEALTH. It starts out like any other Health song but lands out in that distinct Darling Farah deep minimal bass territory.

LOL Boys – Cloudy

Smooth and melodic dreamo-funky from the L.A./Montréal based LOL Boys. Overdramatic club music with pop sensibilities. Their new demo tracks are really good. Get ‘em while they’re hot.

VVV – Traverse

Fellow Austin-based producer VVV serves up infectious warped vocals over a sputtering garage beat. Overall it’s an incredible composition. MASSIVE earworm alert!

Esko – Shook

Shrill hip hop synths in this dark funky track make a nice transition into…

Egyptrixx – Everybody Bleeding

This song is just the tip of the iceberg for Toronto based Egyptrixx. His new material is really impressive. A cross between funky, trance, and deep techno. Watch out for the live P.A. coming to a city near you!

Rishi Romero / DJ Flava – Highly

Another transition tune with a really appropriate name by some dutch house dudes. The lead melodies are intense and ethereal. Something about this track grabs me, plus, I’m a huge sucker for ragga vocals.

Sam Tiba – Barbie Weed

Club Cheval member Sam Tiba wins the prize for hardest track to pidgeon hole. Marching drums, a distorted kick lead line, some Jamaican sounding sample, and chopped sirens. Banger.

Dubbel Dutch – Deep Underground

New track from me. Forthcoming w/ “Throwback” on Palms Out Sounds.

Wicked A – A Nie Dvamata S Bobi Piem Kafe [Ramadanman Refix]

Unintelligible vocal snippets and complex mutated funky percussion. Ramadanman is always ahead of the curve. Surprisingly he recently played one of my favorite bassline tunes when he rolled through Austin. I thought that was pretty awesome.

Pearson Sound – Wad [Dubbel Dutch Refix]

This is Ramadanman under an alias. Similar style to the song that comes before. I think I was listening to a lot of Cajmere on youtube and got inspired to edit it down into a classic house version.

NGUZUNGUZU – GOT U

Wasn’t going to leave you without your dose of heavy breathing for the day. Club music with really catchy vocals and hypnotic melodies from L.A.’s NGUZUNGUZU. This one’s off their new free ep – be sure to cop it if you haven’t yet and don’t forget to say ‘thank you’!

Baobinga & I.D. – Tongue Riddim [Dubbel Dutch Mix]

Bass music blog decided to give away some parts to this track. I’ve been playing the original and Roska remix to death and decided to take a stab at it. Tribal (Monterrey style) inspired off-kilter triplet rhythms within a dubstep-like beat.

Marcus Price – Var e Näääken [Bok Bok Mix]

Evolving 808 toms, deep pounding subs, and some creepy dragged vocals that seem to suggest things I can’t mention without blushing. Not even gonna try to classify. Envelope pushing at its best.

Distal – Grape Donut

Atlanta based Distal has some of the cleanest productions around. The track title reminds me of the pics on the Highness blog. Baile funk rhythms, playful RnB sounding synths, and vocoded vocals.

Last Mixin’ It Up of 2009 and we’re definetely going out with a bang with this one. We’re honoured to present the extremely talented Braiden of Rinse FM fame who gives you a soundtrack for the Christmas holiday. Braiden ranks up there with the top underground DJs in London at the moment. Don’t sleep.

“About me, well, I am deathly passionate about the whole art of DJing. I really put all my energy into doing my studio mixes and hopefully that shows. I’ve been playing on the London pirate station Rinse FM since 2007, originally making a name for myself by playing dubstep. These days I find myself playing less of that sound and my selection seems to get more varied by the week, though I find it very important to find a flow and cohesion between the genres that I play in a mix. I’ve always approaching DJing as a form of music creation in itself, using the tracks as tools to build a new sound rather than simply playing some tracks i like… though thats important as well of course. I’m honoured to have been chosen to participate in the Red Bull Music Academy in 2010 amongst some very talented names.

I found this picture of an absurd technicolour utopia on a Jehova’s Witness pamphlet in a changing room in South London and it reflects this mix better than any picture of my face could. I’ve put together a varied mix of electro, techno, grime, and whatever you want to call this 130bpm uk bass music. Some old, some new, some unreleased, mixed with decks and Serato, clocking in at just over 35 minutes. It’s unlikely you’d see me play such a wide range of genres and tempos within half an hour in a club scenario, but that’s the beauty of studio mixes.

I play on www.rinse.fm and my show is every other Tuesday 1-3pm at the moment. Keep up to date with my mixes, radio shows and other doings via these sites below:

Aphex Twin – Windowlicker [Run Jeremy edit]

My friend said to me “so I was listening to Windowlicker the other day and just stopped and thought about what it was that I was listening to”. He had a point. Listen to those sounds. A unique and timeless piece by that weirdo Richard D James.

Deadboy – Ifuwantme

Big one by the man DEADBOY. Morbid name; life affirming melodies. One of the most Asked About tunes that I’ve played recently; usually via “oi wots that tune you play that sounds like that kode9 tune”. Yes he wears his influences on his sleeve here but they are good influences and it’s a great standout tune. 2010 your time db.

Japanese Telecom – Japanese Animation

Quick mix into this funk analog electro masterpiece by one half of Drexciya. I have an unwavering love for this kind of sound always have. Serato loop to set up a melodic blend into….

Little Jinder – Youth Blood [Bok Bok remix]

A brilliant piece of work by my man Bok Bok. Stand out track for me on his Night Slugs 2009 dubplate mix. Love the disco vibes and the vocodered vocals. Very good as a remix and a track in its own right. I could go on.

Mark Henning – Sick Note

Ok. Lets get movin. Here’s where we step up the pace a bit. British techno expat (guess where he moved to) Mark Henning delivers a pacey groove laden number which delights my ears and mind. Everything works together in rhythmic cohesion.

Greena – Actual Pain

Greena!!! Go buy this track now it just came out on Apple Pips records. Tight production, gives an almost staccato yet very fluid feel. Also goes well with the techno track before it to add some syncopation to the proceedings.

Alden Tyrell – Disco Lunar Module

A driving epic piece of electro by my Dutch mate Alden. He’s not my mate at all actually I’ve never met him. I don’t even know what he looks like. But his music resonates with me to such an extent that I think we could get on well enough to hold a conversation for as long as it takes to drink half a pint of Heineken.

Major Lazer – Pon De Floor

One of my favourite blends on this mix i think. An unlikely pairing but that swooping synth suddenly sounds so epic with ol’ Aldens bassline behind it. Brilliantly done track by itself anyhow, there’s a reason this track was so big this year.

Housemeister – Rambo

Housemeister what a joker. This track is a gem. Snares coming at you from all angles which gel with that stabbing bassline. I would say “funky on crack” if I said those sort of things but I don’t so I won’t and I didn’t. Had to edit it and add a bit of sub to it, the original is criminally subless, the tune’s crying out for it

Martin Kemp – No Charisma

Still lovin this track by Martin Kemp on the Blunted Robots label. Swooping rhythmic synths and percussion is particularly on point. Keep an eye on this guy in 2010!

L-Vis 1990 – Untitled

Lush is the word!! Big lush melodic beatless section breaks down into a tight groove with skillfully manipulated vocals. Beautiful piece by L-Vis. Sly ramping up of tempo here, tracks like this keep me playing 140bpm.

Pangaea – Sunset Yellow

Pangaea’s EP coming out on Hessle Audio has some amazing music on it quite simply. Synth work on this is great, a mutating and haunting piece. Takes the mix on a dark one to set up the listener for some of this (via a little teasing loop):

Dizzee – Stop Dat

Back when Dizzee was a true artist through and through. In his prime easily one of the best MCs grime ever saw. And the production! Raw and energetic, all about the bass stabs on this. And the cat sample. I think its a cat.

Crystal Fighters – I Love London [Brackles remix]

I love mixing vocals like this. Straight into this one by my good man Brackles, picks up the pace even further, immaculate stuff.

Ruff Sqwad – RSMD

I wasn’t even going to draw for another track but got an itchy finger at the last second and went for the double drop. Andy C was the first DJ I was influenced by and it shows sometimes. Solid track by one of my favourite crews to come out of scene
