“This mix is dedicated to the art of the warm-up set. The Colors night at Trouw in Amsterdam recently organised an event where Jack and I were booked alongside Oneman and Cinnaman, a line-up consisting of specialist DJs who don’t produce playing for the duration of the night.

Jack and I had been talking about how rare it was to walk into a club and see DJs building up a set and genuinely warming up the crowd, understandable given that every DJ wants to make an impact and make sure they’re remembered at the end of the night. With that in mind we put ourselves forward to attempt to play the kind of warm-up we’d like to hear more often.”

Young DJs who have the 10pm slot time: Please. PLEASE. Listen. Learn. Put away the 135 bpm for a few more hours, remember that it’s never a bad idea to play Prince, and relax.

Last month the RBMA World Tour culminated its circumnavigation of the globe with a takeover of the biggest ferris wheel in Europe, the London Eye. Each of the 30 capsules featured influential producers, DJs and bands that presented the latest in the upfront London sounds that are currently making waves around the globe. This set comes from the Hessle Audio label crew featuring Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound. Ben UFO has gone from queuing up at London’s FWD to becoming a figurehead of the scene in just a few years, together with Pangaea and Pearson Sound (formerly known as Ramadanman) he runs Hessle Audio. The label has done much to avoid the forensic genrefication of dubstep, working the ever thinning borderlines with dubbed out techno and deep house.

Ben UFO’s set from the Hessle Audio takeover 47th edition of the Boiler Room series is so good that you should hear it live. No tracklisting, but it’s an all vinyl set with a fantastic dubstep meets future garage meets bashment feel to it. Also see a great interview that Ben UFO did with The Quietus about whether the current status of vinyl in DJ culture, the Hessle label, and participating / not participating in the current “hype machine” of musical culture. You can also watch some archived footage of his set here, which is probably guaranteed to bum you out if you weren’t there.
