Blending together trace elements of old NY disco, French house, and the kind of rationale that leads one to leave the house at midnight and go to a club when they have to work at 7am the following morning, it’

A-Trak brings forth an exquisite dub version of his remix for that new The Rapture single “How Deep Is Your Love?”, this is a slow but steady builder with squelchy, nasty synthwork and towards the end that’s when things really kick off.

“I did this remix over the summer, and when I was close to finishing it I played it to my friend, the irreplaceable DJ Mehdi. We often played each other our productions for feedback. As it turns out he and Riton were visiting New York so they stopped by my apartment. I was working on the main version of the remix, the vocal version. I knew I would make a few alternate edits during the mixdown. The funny thing was, Mehdi’s favorite part was the ending! He and Riton suggested that I have that part come in earlier. My reaction was: that would work well for the dub version. And sure enough, when I finished mixing it down I made a dub with their suggestion. When I sent it to Mehdi shortly after, he responded (as a joke) that I should call it “Dub For Mehdi”. He included it in his “Tunisian Summer” mix. And then, as we all know, the unimaginable happened and we lost our dear friend. The least I can do now is name the edit after him. This one’s for you, Memed.”

We were lucky enough to get to put out an EP from Johannesburg’s Nthato Mokgata, AKA Spoek Mathambo, who’s been labelled everything from “sex-obsessed South African Spank Rock” to “subversive leader of some new front of political dance music”.

Spoek’s music is full of intensely well worded critiques of power and corruption, but also enjoyable as hallucination inducing odes to buying guns on the internet. On Discobelle Records released “Kult Leader” EP, “Red For Danger” strikes the balance between marching down the streets with a black bandanna and molotov cocktail and doing the two step on top of someone’s kitchen table at a house party where David Koresh spiked the punch.

DJ Wool, who’s a founding member of Indie Dance duo “The Glass”, weaves a jacking beat of crunchy distortion around Spoek’s words that quite possibly could have subliminal messages stuffed into its seams.
