Dubbel Dutch – Hymn EP + Unknown To The Unknown Mix

Seems like just the other day that I saw Dubbel Dutch’s “Throwback EP” on the front shelf of the “staff recommended” list in a basement record shop in Osaka, Japan – proof that even without record labels throwing millions of dollars at you, having a knack for making unique, transcendental dance music can get you respect from every corner of the globe.

So, maybe then it’s no surprise that Dubbel Dutch’s next EP will be collaborating with the extremely globally minded Mixpak imprint, quickly following the heat generated by his fantastic remix of Vybz Kartel’s “Half On A Baby” which kept all the pop heat of the vocals with a deep underground vibe incorporated.

The “Hymn EP” has already received support from Ramadanman, Girl Unit, Bok Bok, Mosca, and Samo Sound Boy amongst many others, and looks to continue Dubbel Dutch’s tradition of smashing down expectations – an early review of the EP includes the phrase “As if goth Kids fell head over heels in love with Miami Bass”. Definitely sounds on track.

Bonus: Dubbel Dutch guested on DJ Q’s 1Xtra show recently, and Unknown to the Unknown threw up a download link for your aural pleasure (because with global timezones being so effing confusing, who can actually catch a radio show at the right hour these days?)

RIZZLAFTM

Rizzla – FTM Mix

Big, big things are in the works from Rizzla, who provided us with an unbelievably hot mix to start the week. Kicking off with what sounds like a dial up internet connection that you might hear dissonantly playing in the background of a David Lynch movie, things only get more frenetic from there.

Amidst the chaos, you can find a plentiful helping of Ha beats influenced by everything from New Orleans bounce to apocalyptic military reincarnations of the classic Masters At Work “HA Dance” track, each providing enough of a variation on the original theme to sound jarringly different every time.

There are also plentiful original productions from Rizzla here, further showcasing a dancefloor versatility that’s positioned itself somewhere hazily in between house, intensely homoerotic rave, techno, garage, bass, soca, dancehall and vogue, all mixed with maybe a little side of scathing political critique. I mean, when you name a track “Battyboy bleeding in the dark”, there’s gotta be some politics at work. Regardless of how you choose to characterize it, some of these gems may be finding a home on a certain fantastic soon-to-be-revealed label later on this year.

As if that’s not enough, the mix is also stuffed to the seams with exclusives from Mikeq, Dubbel Dutch, Kingdom and previously featured dance music disemboweler blk.adonis. Grab it now, you won’t regret it.

Dubbel Dutch – Slow Club Mix

Austin producer/dj and all around super awesome fella Dubbel Dutch shows us how it’s done in scorching hot Texas with this slowed down Jersey Club r’n'b remixes mixtape.

“Record high temperatures in Texas this week and I’m feeling kinda sluggish. This mix is inspired by O.G. Ron C’s F-Action mixtape series. I decided to take some of my favorite Jersey Club RnB remixes of the moment and slow em down a bit”.

ITFW – Aaliyah Re-Edits

There’s something about the frigidity of Montreal that gives its artists an extra, desperation driven push of creativity. A product of seven out of twelve months likely containing snowstorms, maybe? Whatever it is, it’s probably found abundantly in ITFW, two DJs from the curbs of Montreal, Azamat B and Sinjin Hawke.

Resident DJs of “Boomclap”, they host a weekly friday night party focusing on classic house sounds, detroit techno, chicago juke, with new and old school rap and r&b. Finding a good balance in the Canadian club scene is a difficult thing, but even though the night just began in January 2011, the Boomclap soundcrew has already hosted the likes of Lunice, Jacques Greene, Dubbel Dutch, our Discobelle fam LOL Boys (who also curate the guests), Samo Sound Boy, Brenmar, Prince Club, and many more, for only $5 a night too.

For those of you not in Montreal to experience the magic firsthand only to stumble out into the street searching for $2 chow mein with peanut butter sauce afterwards, the ITFW boys have done an EP of Aaliyah remixes that embody the heart and soul of the party.

While Aaliyah remixes these days need to be examined seriously for the level of necessity of their creation, this package is brimming with five amazing reinterpretations of the original tracks that do their thing and let the vocals shine while still adding some great flourishes.

Grab all five below and show some support for Boomclap if you’re anywhere even remotely near Canada.

DEXPLICIT- BULLACAKE (DUBBEL DUTCH RMX)

Dubbel Dutch rolls through with a free edit of Dexplicit’s tune “Bullacake” (named after the delicious Jamacian molasses, ginger and nutmeg spiced delicacy) that employs strings, pitched vocals and the sound of bullet casings hitting the ground to absolutely deadly effect.

Speaking of Dubbel Dutch, his 12″ of white label re-edits will be coming out on Dutty Artz soon, featuring reworkings of Deborah Cox, R. Kelly, Ciara, Harddrive, and two original tracks. Pre-order it at Crosstalk, it’s absolutely not to be missed.

Download Dub Dutch’s “Bullacake” edit below from Soundcloud.

Jim-E Stack Fader Mix

New Orleans native Jim-E Stack is young, talented, and always strapped. Okay, the last one is just a guess, but this recently compiled Fader Mix carries so much metaphorical firepower that it might as well be true. This mix has new tracks by LOL Boys, NGUZUNGUZU, Dubbel Dutch, and a surprisingly good unknown edit of a Wacka Flocka track, early limewire internet style. It’s a happy surprise that in 2011 there can still be such thing as an “unknown edit”.
