New Jersey resident DJ MikeQ Is one of the leading figures of the East Coast’s long-running (but still largely underground) ballroom/vogue-house scene. Only 25 and he’s already been touted as somewhat of a legend in the ballroom scene, with re-edits and remixes of tons of classic house material that are reworked into a sparse and jarring dance music.

Maurcia feels like a homage to the vogue scene, as MikeQ hands over the mic to Maurcia Rodriguez, a self-described “transexual from the Lower East Side… which means I’m living inside what used to be a man’s body”

Maurica lays down some real talk about being able to still dudes at basketball, being self conscious about one’s feet, breast enhancement surgery, tranny parties, vegetarianism, and a perfect date including playing Atari on a first date and watching some new Tyler Perry movies. In the background, MikeQ sweats out some stabby, percussion that compliments the vocals perfectly.

But underneath the lightheartedness of some of her lyrics, Maurica’s assertion that “this healthcare situation is ridiculous” still hits a nerve as a reflection on the way that adequate healthcare still remains pretty inaccessible to a lot of trans folks.

Keep your eye out for many more big productions coming from DJ MikeQ soon, including what we can only imagine will be a monstrous remix of Egyptrixx’s “Liberation Front”.

Egyptrixx’s debut album, the “Bible Eyes” LP is out now, and as a reminder to pick up this grizzled portrait of celestial electronic club music, we’re posting a few of the tracks we’ve been listening to in building anticipation for this album. Murky and brooding one minute, it has the tendency to erupt into rising synths that sound like fireworks or other more sinister explosions in the sky. The tone shifts from introspective to boomingly confident, and it’s all fantastic.

Egyptrixx – Chrysalis Records (feat. Trust)

Egyptrixx – Chrysalis Records (feat. Trust) (video)

Cubic Zirconia – Josephine (Egyptrixx Dub)

Be sure to grab Bible Eyes digitally on Boomkat, or as a 2 x LP on Juno Records.

Also, you can read a brief interview with Egyptrixx after the jump where he talks a bit about the making of Bible Eyes.

Discobelle: Making an album seems different than EPs in the sense that it’s trying to maybe evoke a more consistent narrative.

Egyptrixx: Yea, the LP format simultaneously provides more space to experiment but also a greater opportunity to be cohesive. It was a lot of fun to write, I definitely enjoyed the process.

Do you feel like the difference in feeling between albums and EPs makes you want to focus on one more than the other in the future?

I’m not sure “feeling” is so directly tied to one format or the other, but right now my mind is thinking in terms of full-length albums.

When working on an album, do you ever feel like the final product has become something other than what you’ve intended it to be? Or when making something as big as an album, is it important to feel like you’re somewhat in control of all finer points of the process?

At the outset, the only thing I had in mind was a set of parameters; a sound palette, some song structure guidelines and a vague lyrical theme. These guides are pretty important to me, I find it almost impossible to work without them. It wasn’t that I was ever working towards an envisioned final product, but always within those parameters.

You’ve been touring quite a bit lately. How’s the experience of re-assembling material from the Bible Eyes LP been live?

Its been interesting, and mostly great. Still a work in progress for sure.

This album marks your first vocal collaboration with Toronto based artist Trust. How did the collaboration happen, and will you be incorporating more collaborations into future work?

I’m a big fan of their band and approached them to write some songs. In my experience, the mechanics of each collaboration are usually completely different. No two are alike. Ill definitely be doing more collaborations.

Looking back to some of your earlier work, how would you say that Bible Eyes differs?

The album was the first thing I wrote being fully committed to Egyptrixx as a full-time gig, up until this point most of my releases were just experiments with different sounds or production techniques.

What’s on the horizon for Egyptrixx?

More writing and more touring.

Egyptrixx just released his new EP “The Only Way Up” on the Night Slugs imprint (that’s more and more looking like a strong contender for label of the year) and on that EP Cubic Zirconia returns the remix favour.

PS 2. Releaseparty for said EP will be held at The Studio/Webster Hall in NYC on saturday April 3rd. It also happens to be the premiere of Kingdoms and Dre Skulls new party Club Infinity and to celebrate the event he’s giving away this remix from the archives.
