Objekt – Cactus

“Lying in bed with headphones playing CACTUS. It is so fucking incredible” was what Four Tet tweeted to TJ Hertz today, who is better known as white label magician Objekt. Kieren Hebden was of course, referring to the new EP debuting on Hessle Audio on February 6th, the prickly minded “Cactus / Porcupine” EP.

“Cactus” walks a tightrope that I thought was pretty impossible – there’s something in it for the ‘wub wub wub’step lovers, and it’s decidedly more dubstep than anything else that Objekt’s released so far, but it still manages to sound utterly unlike anything else out at the moment. It sounds like searing bursts of white hot electricity dancing around a haywire stove in a 6th floor Parkdale apartment, which would be terrible in real life, but in music form sounds pretty great.

“Porcupine” is a frenetic series of energized claps wound tightly around some sinister pulsating noises and an ambient house beat running in the background. Even at a two minute preview, it’s deceptively entrancing.

Juk Juk – Frozen / Winter Turns Spring

By no means a new release (it dropped back at the beginning of October) but absolutely one that’s been garnering tons of repeated play at Discobelle HQ is Juk Juk’s new 12″ on Four Tet-curated Text Records.

Melding garage house with a genre that maybe is still classifiable as dubstep but probably not really (considering that dubstep is the same term that PR emails are using to describe the Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull remixes they’re flooding the internet with), “Frozen” takes you through a minute of softly thumbed acoustic strums and monklike stuttering before a restless, thumping broken beat comes speeding out of nowhere and replaces the quiet with a thoroughly satisfying climax.

“Winter Turns Spring” also turns on a pulsating rhythm that slowly gets amplified by buzzing static electricity, it’s a track that make six minutes feel like a heartbeat. Call it instrospective two-step, dubstep for people who absolutely loathe dubstep, or just don’t try to lump it into any classifiable category and listen to it again and again and again and again.

Radiohead – TKOL RMX 1234567

So, this is the deal. Radiohead – one of the most iconic and creative groups of the last two decades recently released their album “The King Of Limbs” and now they put together a remix album which basically features a who’s who of modern British dance music producers.

The “TKOL RMX 1234567″ double CD brings together all 19 remixes that form the band’s current 12” vinyl singles series and will be released on XL Recordings come October 10th. It showcases an absolute arsenal of desolate, post dubstep beats and dreamlike soundscapes from producers such as Caribou, Jacques Greene, Nathan Fake, Harmonic 313, Mark Pritchard, Lone, Pearson Sound, Scavenger, Four Tet, Thriller, Illum Sphere, Shed, Brokenchord, Altrice, Blawan, Modeselektor, Objekt, Jamie xx, Anastam and SBTRKT.

Four Tet – Locked

Whether or not the title is a subtle tribute to Rinse FM or The Boiler Room is anybody’s guess.

‘Locked’ is the eleventh release on his Text label and taken from Hebden’s ‘FABRICLIVE 59′ compilation. Kind of scary how prolific Four Tet is becoming. Stream it below.

Boiler Room #49: Four Tet

Leave it to Kieran Hebden of Four Tet to cast a spell on the latest Boiler Room set – given his recent stutter inducing Thom Yorke collaboration, it’s kind of not surprising how effortless those forty five minutes of new Burial tunes, glitchy unclassifiable house music and computerized moments of dancefloor transcendence seem.

As mentioned before, subscribing to the Boiler Room podcast can score you all these mixes free of charge, and are about as close as you can get to being in a dingy, wet floored basement with a bunch of underground dance music legends. If you want to pretend you were there, you can also watch this video of the set – if you squint at the screen for a few minutes, it’s almost like being there under the influence.

Pantha Du Prince x Panda Bear x Four Tet

Pantha Du Prince makes some of the smoothest techno we know, Panda Bear makes alot of experimental stuff with Animal Collective and Four Tet is just brilliant. Here we get them all together with the Four Tet remix of the track “Stick To My Side” (taken off the recently released Pantha Du Prince album “Black Noise”). The result of the threesome is a vibrant and pulsating techno tune that makes us quite happy.
