A thoroughbred entertainer and impeccable selector, Jackmaster’s sets range from bass to boogie, raw Chicago house to 80s wedding classics. No wonder he was just named “Best Breakthrough DJ” by DJ Mag. Here Jackmaster is teaming up with his Numbers labelmate Deadboy who has been stirring things up with his bass drenched invasion of the borderlands between house and UK garage. This was recorded last month at the conclusion of the RBMA World Tour when they took over the biggest ferris wheel in Europe, the London Eye.

Jamie XX – Far Nearer Release Set on Rinse FM

Fact Magazine recently wrote a really great review of “Far Nearer” that poses a poignant question. After addressing the fact that the likes of Jamie Smith and a select group of others have pioneered a difficult to pin down sound that’s spawning a huge number of copycats and offshoots, Fact asks: “After your hero’s released a track like this, how can you continue to copy him?”

While that quote is specifically about “Far Nearer”, the same thing can be said for Jamie XX’s recent Rinse FM session with Jackmaster. Calling it “hard to pin down” is an understatement.

The mix starts off with a slowed version of 20th Century Steel Band’s “Heaven and Hell”, stripping the track down a bit to let the exceptional steel drums ring out. He plays “Far Nearer”, but at a sluggish BPM and with Addison Grove’s “Footcrab” thrown overtop of it, changing the vibe immensely from tropical love song to a sluggish vocal looping club workout. Some tributes to recently deceased American legend Gil Scott-Heron are sprinkled in throughout, and the fact that it lacks a tracklisting adds to the mystique.

I guess if you want to be Jamie XX, (or sound like him at least) studying this mix is a good start – but maybe it’s a futile effort regardless.

A few weeks ago we told you about our partnership with Night Slugs and Dress 2 Sweat for the release of the “Night Slugs” EP from London producers/dj’s Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990. Well, the wait is over and the EP has begun to ship and has hit digital retailers already. Go grab it, you know that you need this in your life.

Barcelona Bass + ticket giveaway

Our friends down in Barcelona – Plat Du Jour – are getting ready for the madness that is more commonly known as the Sonar festival. The city will be invaded by thousands of sun craving, alcohol/substance fueled yet surprisingly calm and friendly dance tourists from all over the world. The Plat Du Jour crew will host a spectacular off-Sonar night at Club Mondo this thursday (the 18th) and they were kind enough to offer you faithful Discobelle readers who might be in the city 2 pairs of tickets for the extravaganza (acts confirmed are Flying Lotus, Mumdance, Jackmaster etc. Check the full lineup after the jump, it’ll be mad). Dress 2 Sweats own Jackmaster dropped this little mix over at the forum on Miscreat. Last week we posted the Jackmaster vs. Bok Bok mix that was excellent and going all over. This mix is fun, happy and especially FUNKY!. Since UK Funky blew our heads off this summer with big hits like “Bongo Jam” it seems that it’s all about the funky. If you are new to UK Funky, this mix is essential with some of the biggest tracks from the genre.
