Blawan – Getting Me Down

Who’d have thought that 2011 was the year of Brandy? Even though 1994 was more than a decade and a half ago now, there’s been a strong resurgence of samples coming from her debut track “I Wanna Be Down”.

Our recent release from Voltron employs part of the vocal hook from “I Wanna Be Down” on “Be For Real”, building up a fort of crystalised synth stabs around Brandy’s warmth.

Jacques Greene pitched up her voice and sliced together some perfectly choppy drums and shimmering distortion overtop the same sample on the title track of his “The Look” EP on LuckyMe.

Pearson Sound even turned the sample into a twinkling, syncopated ode to quasi-house minimalism on his “Down With You” revision.

But there’s something special about Blawan’s take on this track that’s just urging you to rewind it several times while yelling awesome things about it, even if you’re just ustreaming in your basement with two friends online. Maybe it’s the immediately notable is the way that it uses a notably larger chunk of the vocals than any of the other tracks using the same sample. Maybe it’s the discontent rumbling bass simmers underneath something that sounds like a rainstick being turned upside down again and again. Maybe it’s the way that it rejects popiness with warped vocals and slightly out of tune pitch, while still maintaining a housey vibe that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Renaissance Man set.

Whatever the magic is, the white label vinyl pressing has been flying off the shelf, currently sold out at Juno, Rubadub, and several other places, after some stores have even had to enforce a “one-per-customer” policy. That’s nuts. Best of luck trying to get ahold of it! I think there’s a repress coming soon.

layitdown

Jacques Greene – Lay It Down (Nacho Lovers Remix)

Canadian contingent Jacques Greene and Nacho Lovers weave some acid bassline magic together on the second release from New York based UNO label.

Saxaphones subtly pop in and out of the background behind the persistence of 808 bleeps and a vocal sample reminding you that “your life is in your hands”. Sounding like something that would play in the back room of Toronto bars in early summertime, their influences gel together in a warm-808 drenched love letter to house music.

ITFW – Aaliyah Re-Edits

There’s something about the frigidity of Montreal that gives its artists an extra, desperation driven push of creativity. A product of seven out of twelve months likely containing snowstorms, maybe? Whatever it is, it’s probably found abundantly in ITFW, two DJs from the curbs of Montreal, Azamat B and Sinjin Hawke.

Resident DJs of “Boomclap”, they host a weekly friday night party focusing on classic house sounds, detroit techno, chicago juke, with new and old school rap and r&b. Finding a good balance in the Canadian club scene is a difficult thing, but even though the night just began in January 2011, the Boomclap soundcrew has already hosted the likes of Lunice, Jacques Greene, Dubbel Dutch, our Discobelle fam LOL Boys (who also curate the guests), Samo Sound Boy, Brenmar, Prince Club, and many more, for only $5 a night too.

For those of you not in Montreal to experience the magic firsthand only to stumble out into the street searching for $2 chow mein with peanut butter sauce afterwards, the ITFW boys have done an EP of Aaliyah remixes that embody the heart and soul of the party.

While Aaliyah remixes these days need to be examined seriously for the level of necessity of their creation, this package is brimming with five amazing reinterpretations of the original tracks that do their thing and let the vocals shine while still adding some great flourishes.

Grab all five below and show some support for Boomclap if you’re anywhere even remotely near Canada.

Caravan/Watching You + Miami party

We just recieved an e-mail with two goodies from the Sound Pellegrino camp. A couple of weeks ago the French label released the new EP “Caravan/Watching You” from Swedish purveyors of bass and production genius duo known as Savage Skulls.

First out is the amazing Jacques Greene remix of “Caravan” which was included on the EP.

“Montreal prodigy Jacques Greene known for his releases on excellent labels Night Slugs and Luckyme, who is single-handedly buiding the proverbial bridge between true skool house aficionados and UK-obsessed garage heads, provided us with a fantastic 90’s sounding remix of “Caravan” in his signature groove, complete with funky stabs and vintage drum sounds.”

Savage Skulls – Caravan (Jacques Greene remix) (ge.tt)

Second, a brand new unreleased modern-baile-funk remix of “Caravan” by Rio de Janeiro based producer Leo Justi which was previewed on this week’s Sound Pellegrino podcast.

“Leo Justi likes it rough. 24 year old brazilian DJ and producer is a fan of the sexually-charged baile funk anthems that echo through his hometown of Rio de Janeiro. While his Hype Machine generation peers may think of Baile Funk as an occasional spice to remixes or as something Diplo once liked, Justi digs deep into the sound of Rio’s slums. These raw sounds serve as a basis to his music, while he adds dark atmospheres, chunks of different beat patterns and the occasional sonic joke to them. Justi has a broad musical influence, been an Ozzy fan, played guitar in rock and reggae bands, loves Super Cat and Chet Baker… his mixes, however, aim at only one thing: dancefloor frantic trance.”

Jacques Greene – Tell Me (Kingdom Edit)

Kingdom throws some throbbing percussion underneath the sleeper hit from Jacques Greene’s “The Look” EP, and then builds an entirely separate vocal sample that’s integrated seamlessly from the original one. It doesn’t hurt that the original of “Tell Me” is already a pulsating, hypnotic gem. As someone who’s listened to the original of the track so many times that it’s etched into my brain, I thought the changes were pretty small at first; but halfway through something shifts and it becomes a totally new thing.

Scotland based label LuckyMe are building an army of talent who you’ll probably keep hearing rave reviews about throughout 2011; Jacques is only one member of a much bigger creative family that’s worth getting familiar with. If somehow you missed Greene’s debut EP on LuckyMe, grab it and hold it close to you throughout the night.

Grahmzilla – F*ck Winter

Grahm AKA Grahmzilla or Nautiluss is our go to dj/producer in Toronto when it comes to all things bass. He’s just about to embark on a tour aptly titled “F*ck Winter” (that includes a few Red Bull Music Academy dates with Lunice, Jacques Greene et al) and to promote this extravaganza he decided to do mix that takes us on a rollercoaster of a ride that can best be described the equivalent of a smashing dance party.

Sound Pellegrino presents: Savage Skulls – Caravan/Watching You

Another big release from the Sound Pellegrino camp, the “Caravan/Watching You” EP by Swedish production tag team Savage Skulls drops on February 14th.

“Infamous duo Savage Skulls are back and they found some time between their collaborative projects with Robyn, Douster, Crookers and Marcus Price to hit with two slick dancefloor destroyers. “Caravan” is a tech house stomper backed by a mesmerizing melody of vocal chops that you will instantly recognize. “Watching You”, their collaboration with flatmate Tony Senghore and vocalist Sprinkle Juice is raw, stripped-down backroom electro at its finest: sensitive but not devoid of muscle. On remix duties, Montreal sensation Jacques Greene (Lucky Me, Night Slugs) united garage deepness with a jacking 90′s feel, while Made To Play’s Payme (Jaime Anderson from Idiotproof) offers a classy tracky rework build for the front room.”
