Sample Me Up 2

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

James Yuill has finally finished his second Sample Me Up. Here is what he got to say about it:

“I hope that when people listen to the tracks they initially try to hear all the samples, but then get lost and just listen to it as a song rather than a collection of random sounds. The reason I started the Sample Me Up Project is because I wanted the people who listen to my music to get involved in helping me actually create new music. I know a lot of artists ask their fans to help with remixes and artwork. I actually thought it would be quite interesting to crowd source the actual music itself (albeit samples). So here we are!

I’d also like to use this opportunity to unveil my next little project. This one is in the form of a video competition. I’m looking for people to make a video to any one of my Sample Me Up tracks. Shove them on YouTube and send me a link. I will eventually choose a winner, who will then get the chance to make the video for one of my future singles.

Lastly, I’d like to say a big thank you to all the people that sent in samples for my project!”

The (2) tracks are called:

Sample Me Up 2 – The Smashed Bulb (Sendspace)

James Yuill is releasing the below Earth and Fire Versions of his “Turning Down Water for Air” album on September 22nd. He also wanted to let you know that he has started on his new project where he asks the public for 5 second audio samples that he then uses to make a track . The first version of “Sample Me Up” came out in August and now he is looking for new samples for “Sample Me Up 2″ . “They basically have to be recorded especially for the project…in a kind of Matthew Herbert style. so no programmed beats etc.”. Read more about the project here and check out his new Earth and Fire Versions of “Turning Down Water for Air” on September 22nd.

Over The Hills (Milberg Remix)

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

James Yuill has been one of our favourites since he entered and won our Roots Manuva remix competition last summer. We have since then featured him frequently here on the site. Now he is back with a new EP “Over The Hills” which will be out in stores in the US on June 16th. It has a remix by Swedish singstress Lisa Milberg from The Concretes so we just had to have this on the site.

“Over The Hills” is already out digitally on Moshi Moshi Records so go get it on iTunes

The last twelve months have seen Londoner James Yuill make the journey from self-releasing records from his suburban bedroom studio to signing with Moshi Moshi Records, gigging everywhere from the Radio One Big Weekend to a beach in the Bahamas, and releasing his debut album “Turning Down Water For Air”. He also managed to squeeze in a Mixin’ It Up for us here at Discobelle.

“No Surprise” (a recent iTunes single of the week) originally comes in a choice of three flavours: the original album version, where James’s songwriting and electronic wizardry are in perfect balance or in brand new ‘Earth’ and ‘Fire’ versions where James takes the song for inspired diversions down acoustic and dancefloor routes respectively. But now we’ve got the acappella for you to play around with. The prize for the best remix is that it will released in some way by Moshi Moshi/James Yuill and the winner will also get the Moshi Moshi back catalogue and James Yuill goodies. Get cracking and send your remixes this way (end date is June 6th)!

PS. Those of you in Malmö tonight should go and check out James when he plays at Babel.

PS 2. New single “Over The Hills” will drop May 25th on Moshi Moshi.

Another sunday and another post on James Yuill, he’s remixed the track “Holy Pictures” from Belfast producer David Holmes and it’s turned into a sweet folktronica jam. The single is released tomorrow.

James Yuill is becoming a staple here on Discobelle, we especially like how he manages to combine a softer, almost folky acoustic driven sound with electronic beats. James recently remixed Rod Thomas’s single “Same Old Lines” and here Rod returns the favour. James’ debut album “Turning Down Water For Air” is out now on Moshi Moshi.

More James Yuill

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

It may seem like I have an obsession with James Yuill at the moment but he just keep giving us stuff we like. Here is a new remix of his track “This Sweet Love” from Prince Thomas, couldn’t picked a better guy for this remix. James debut album “Turning Down Water For Air” might become my favorite work album of the year when it will be released on Moshi Moshi on October 13th. It is just that beautiful.

Sam Isaac will be releasing a new EP in two weeks from now called “Sticker Star And Tape” (released via Alcopop Records on 29th September). We got hold of two remixes of the title track for you and since one of them is from one of our favorites, James Yuill, we jumped all over it.
