Young Turks Takeover on FBi Radio

The Young Turks label are currently down in Australia staging a week long takeover on Sydney based radiostation FBi Radio and they’ve already showcased a minimix from Romy xx and Bullion + a new instrumental version of a track entitled “Touch Me” from Jamie XX (which some of you might have heard on his Boiler Room session with Yasmin).

Radiohead – TKOL RMX 1234567

So, this is the deal. Radiohead – one of the most iconic and creative groups of the last two decades recently released their album “The King Of Limbs” and now they put together a remix album which basically features a who’s who of modern British dance music producers.

The “TKOL RMX 1234567″ double CD brings together all 19 remixes that form the band’s current 12” vinyl singles series and will be released on XL Recordings come October 10th. Fact Mix #282: Jamie XX

Another week, another splendid mix courtesy of London production prodigy and The XX member Jamie XX. This one’s made for UK publication Fact Magazine and is described as: “a haunting, late night garage session”. Grab it below and enjoy!

Koreless – Lost In Tokyo

Pretty easy to get lost in Tokyo, especially considering small neighborhoods do away with street names in lieu of three combinations of numbers (3-11-6) for each small area – making tasks such as discovering record stores tucked away in the back corners of Shibuya or perched on the 18th floor of a building in Akihabara nightmarish for anyone who’s not fluent in Japanese, especially considering how often record stores in Tokyo are being shut down now, which is a mega :( situation.

New track from Koreless (mixed with Floating Point’s “Sais (Dub)” here – as the video’s an unofficial one taken from Jamie XX’s latest Essential Mix) evokes a bit of the wonder and excitement of being lost in a sprawling metropolis without all the hyperbolic melancholy that Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson brought to the table.

Jamie XX – Essential Mix 27/8-2011

Young London wiz producer and member of The XX – Jamie XX – did the latest essential mix for BBC Radio 1, and it’s truly essential so hold off whatever you’re doing, may it be evacuating from hurricane Irene or doing the dishes and listen to this right now.

Jamie XX – Far Nearer Release Set on Rinse FM

Fact Magazine recently wrote a really great review of “Far Nearer” that poses a poignant question. After addressing the fact that the likes of Jamie Smith and a select group of others have pioneered a difficult to pin down sound that’s spawning a huge number of copycats and offshoots, Fact asks: “After your hero’s released a track like this, how can you continue to copy him?”

While that quote is specifically about “Far Nearer”, the same thing can be said for Jamie XX’s recent Rinse FM session with Jackmaster. Calling it “hard to pin down” is an understatement.

The mix starts off with a slowed version of 20th Century Steel Band’s “Heaven and Hell”, stripping the track down a bit to let the exceptional steel drums ring out. He plays “Far Nearer”, but at a sluggish BPM and with Addison Grove’s “Footcrab” thrown overtop of it, changing the vibe immensely from tropical love song to a sluggish vocal looping club workout. Some tributes to recently deceased American legend Gil Scott-Heron are sprinkled in throughout, and the fact that it lacks a tracklisting adds to the mystique.

I guess if you want to be Jamie XX, (or sound like him at least) studying this mix is a good start – but maybe it’s a futile effort regardless.

Jamie XX – Far Nearer / Beat For

Finally it’s here, Jamie XX’s debut single on Numbers.

Maybe it’s too early to call “Far Nearer” the quinessential summer jam of the season, but then again maybe it’s not – especially considering the way its steel drums wrap perfectly around the slightly warped vocals so fittingly.

B-side “Beat For” trades in the feel good vibes for spacey, static electricity swirling around another pitched vocal sample, and feels kind of like slowly emerging yourself into a hot tub that’s got some live wires drooping in the deep end.

The hi-spec 12″ comes complete with heavyweight vinyl housed in a fluorescent inner and die cut outer sleeve. Stream both tracks below, then do yourself + everyone a favor and grab it from Numbers or Rubadub.

The 2 Bears – Red Bull Music Academy Radio Mix

Start your week off right with this Red Bull Music Academy exclusive, new music from Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Ministry of Sound radio host Raf Rundell, who occasionally dress up as bears and make joyfully oddball house music under The 2 Bears moniker.

Falling under the weird multicolored umbrella of the Greco-Roman Soundsystem collective, they’re partially named as a tribute to the gay contingent of early disco and house pioneers who paved the way for a movement that others would eventually mutate into “brostep” thirty years later, and partially as a tribute to those big furry things that run around in the woods and terrorize cottagers.

In a recent interview with Dazed Digital, Rundell talks a bit about the oft-made connection between their name and gay subculture by saying “we have huge respect for the pioneers of House music and nightclubbing – some of them were gay. We have some gay friends but I think most people probably do.”

Redundant maybe, but there’s something humble about the statement that makes this batch of tunes from Hessle heavyweight Joe, Adele, Toddla T and Guilty Simpson that makes it feel all the more authentic.
