When Saints Go Machine – Fail Forever (Nicolas Jaar Remix)

Wonderyouth Nicolas Jaar strikes a good balance between ambient and danceable on his reworking of of Denmark’s When Saints Go Machine. The track peaks about halfway through, where Jaar throws some handclaps on top of some steel drums and creates an atmosphere that’s simultaneously grooving and melancholy, pitching the tempo up and down in sync with the pacing of the track, reminiscent of some of Four Tet’s earlier work. When Saints Go Machine’s upcoming album “Konkylie” is set for a June release, and will surely bring more purgatory-step beats with it.

Teufelsleiter

German trio Brandt Brauer Frick whips up a tasty and energyfilled treat with the release of their stunning debut album “You Make Me Real” (released by !K7 Records) which combines the base of drums, strings and pianos from their classically trained past with their techno present. “Teufelsleiter” (which translates to “devil’s ladder”) is the album closer that thumps with timpani beats, glowering tuba and flashes of pizzicato strings.

Blo

London based UK funky/post dubstep/house producer and Rinse FM radio dj Brackles just finished his first mix CD, it was done for !K7 Records and is the inaugural release of their new mix series “Songs From Endless Cities” (to be released August 31st).

“Songs for Endless Cities aims to capture a slice of Brackles after hours and out of hours, with the afterglow still burning, maybe the rhythms still bumping, but with the freedom to rove around a bit, enjoying and exploring sound without always having to turn back to the dancefloor.”

On the mix CD we get a new track from Brackles. “Blo” is a track that floats into a deep, hypnotic mass of warm synths.

The Juan MacLean – Feel So Good

The Juan MacLean is the latest in a long line of great artist to do a DJ Kicks mix/compilation (the CD will be released on April 27th).

The good people at !K7 Records have given us one of the tracks for the mix as an exclusive stream (and you can sign up for a download here), the track in question is the simply fantastic new The Juan MacLean track “Feel So Good”. Already getting heavy spins at WMC from the likes of Cosmo Baker & others, it’s a safe bet that this one will be destroying dance floors near you for a long time to come. Featuring vocals from Nancy Whang and a drum loop from the late Jerry Fuchs, the upbeat and sweaty dance track embodies the spirit of Juan’s mix: a love of classic house music with an eye cast towards the future.

“I really wasn’t joking in the liner notes when I said that in the six months I knew I was going to do this mix, I spent most of the time agonizing over the relevance of doing a DJ mix in 2010,” says MacLean, a cheerful neurotic who’s clearly serious about his craft. “So much about DJ-ing has changed in the last 10 years. It seems that anyone at home can make their own mix, whether they’re a proper DJ or not. Which begs the question, why bother putting them out at this point?”

“So at the end of the day I just came back to where I had started, which was basically wanting to do something that was representative of where I’m coming from in producing my own music, and also focusing on the current house music scene.”

Joakim_MilkyMix

Milky

When you find a new mix from Joakim in the mailbox, you know it’s going to be a pretty good day. This mix of kraut/fuzzy rock/disco is made as a teaser for the September 17th release of the new Joakim album “Milky Ways” (released by !K7 Records).

“How cool must it be to be Joakim? The French producer/bandleader’s kitchen sink approach to music has made his albums increasingly difficult to classify, leaving his fans braced for whatever curve he might happen to throw at them next. A curve such as this mix, perhaps. No need to worry, the requisite dirty disco abounds (see Red Dragon Band’s excellent Italo jam “Let Me Be Your Radio” or Joakim’s own “Watermellon Bubblicious”). But mixing a Beatles outtake with Chicago Juke king DJ Deeon? The sludge fuzz double header of The Goslings and Acid Mothers Temple? A Rolling Stones track that isn’t “Miss You?” Clearly Joakim isn’t messing around. For a picture of where his head is at musically right now, this mix is an excellent primer.”
