LOL Boys for Frite Nite Podcast

Continually reminding me of the reasons that I love mixes (effortlessly harmonious mixing, unfamiliar tracks from familiar artists, as well as a few staggeringly heavy collaborations such as “Hot City X LOL Boys – Hot Boys” for example), LOL Boys start the year off on the right foot with their contribution to the Frite Nite podcast.

Their first release of 2012, their long anticipated and oft’ bootlegged/ripped remix of T2 and Jodie’s “Heartbroken,” drops on Uno, Feb 14th.

Worthy – Lost Dog (LOL Boys Remix)

Worthy’s new release on Discobelle Records is a skeletal house beat with some big hollow, rapid wartime drums on the original which blossoms into a piece of tech house trance warfare – we’ve also got a 7th level of hell reworking from Pelican Fly alumni Lucid, and LOL Boys working some percussive somersaults with the original, building it up into one of their most infectious ballooning basslines to date.

Worthy – Lost Dog EP

San Francisco’s Anabatic label runner and Dirtybird co-founder Worthy is on one with his followup to last year’s “Big Perm” release on Discobelle Records. This time, he’s channeled his expert house percolation into the “Lost Dog” EP, accompanied by two remixes – one from amorphously adaptive percussive dream team LOL BOYS and another from Pelican Fly’s frenetically unpredictable dancefloor worker, Lucid.

“Lost Dog” starts off as a skeletal house beat with some big hollow, rapid wartime drums sounding off over shamanic incantations yelped in the background. Things quickly get a bit more fleshed out as the tune meshes together into cohesiveness – Joe’s “Claptrap” for the tech house set, but replacing handclaps, sparse piano and coughing with chirping cut up vocal bursts and an unending percussive beat that burrows its way inside your skull.

It’s tough to outshine the LOL Boys remix though, which completely revamps the source material into a runway worthy pulsing, bubbling 808 affair complete with a dancefloor slaying vocal cut. “I work the crowd, I REALLY work it” gets muttered by what could well be a New York City transexual go-go dancer while a ballooning, expanding bassline rumbles underneath, powerful enough to kill small animals and puncture eardrums of anyone standing too close to the sound system. Throughout the six minutes, the track undergoes a workout of percussive somersaults and sounds like Egyptian Lover had a love child with J. Phlip on a yacht somewhere in the South Pacific.

Lucid’s take on “Lost Dog” asks you to check your expectations at the door, as the sound of hitting one of those question mark boxes in Super Mario Bros. signals a descent into a wormhole that abandons any cohesion or sanity that you might expect. Skittering bursts of hip hop pseudo-trance infused drum machines gallop their way overtop unpredictable synth fluctuations – outrageous southern hip-hop melded with a trip down the K hole. After coming out the other end, it’s safe to say you’re not going to be the same.

Out November 7th, stream it in full on Soundcloud now!

DJ Funeral

The debut EP from mysterious producer DJ Funeral – “Last Breath” – drops today on new Los Angeles label Body High (brainchild of Samo Sound Boy and Jerome of LOL Boys). When you hear it you’ll see that it’s an obvious choice of releasedate. This is some evil, twisted club music that will have you bouncing off the walls or maybe just banging your head against the speaker of the nearest dark, cavernous club.

BONUS: The aptly titled and apocalyptic “Hits from the gRAVE” mix that he did for DIS Magazine has been described as: “It’s the best mix in the history of all sound – including the big bang!”

LOL Boys Fall Mix

Leaving the dark corners of cyberspace to embark on what will probably be a blurry sleep deprived hallucination inducing European Tour, LOL Boys churned out a frothy new mix for Look Out Presents: that’s got so much new exciting music that looking at the tracklisting makes you feel a kind of giddyness akin to waking up at 4:30am on Christmas morning.

But all the exclusives in the world don’t mean a thing if the substance and mixing isn’t there, and this mix delivers immensely in all those areas, throwing down an accurate portrayal as to what seeing Jerome and Markus live might entail – from the tightly meshed together blend of Boddika’s “Acid Jackson” merging with the Robbie Tronco sampled “walk for me” vogue-house-bass addictiveness of Joy O’s “Swims” to placing Trina’s “Red Bottoms” side by side with Renaissance Man’s twitchy apocalyptic tech ode to Blade Runner “Stalker Humanoid”.

Not to mention the sheer dancefloor bliss you can just imagine hearing Soulja Boy’s “My City” would cause in the early hours of the morning. Oh yeah, there’s also a preview of their jaw unhinging remix for our next release on Discobelle Records, Worthy’s “Lost Dog” EP.

Download for free from Soundcloud, and just gape at that tracklisting.

DJ Dodger Stadium – Stadium Status

There’s probably enough dance music creativity split between Samo Sound Boy and Jerome of LOL Boys to create a 48 hour live percussion laced opera that could only be performed in the depths of LA’s sewer system, so their recently formed Body High label feels ripe to bursting with potential. The first release, the “Stadium Status” EP is a warning sign to American dance music labels everywhere to step their game up, five tracks merging new and essential classic Dance Mania vibes indistinguishably.

Calling your lead single “Stadium Status” would seem to imply that it’ll be one for the clubs, and that’s certainly true here. Pitched up vocals referencing “all you hos” behind some bubbling-coffee-pot acid synth work melds together to result in a big psychedelia infused drop three minutes in.

However, the video delves into some darker territory. A second-long clip of Rodney King getting assaulted by the police quickly cuts away to huge fires blazing in downtown LA, verging of engulfing the highway in flame. It feels like an acknowledgment of one of the important events in the last quarter century that perseveres in shaping LA’s identity today, and adds a sinister kind of urgency to the track.

Buy the Stadium Status EP on Beatport or Juno Downloads now, and stream the entire EP on Soundcloud.

Sho Stoppa – Flaunt It (LOL Boys Remix)

The next installation in the ever-continuing Pelican Fly saga of quality dance music arrives in the form of October 10th’s “On The Track EP (FLY004)” from Richelle, which includes original tracks “I Think”, “Don’t Do” and “Somewhere Secret” and features remixes by Marcus Price, Max Le Daron & Javier Estrada and Canblaster. Tough to choose a favorite, but the contribution from Newark based Jersey house legend-in-the-making DJ Sliink is something truly breathtaking.

And to celebrate, here’s another free piece of Pelican Fly swag:

Another week, another free secret weapon from the family! LOL Boys, aka your favourite “internet loving duo”, are bringing some serious heat this week with their rework of Sho Stoppa’s club banger “Flaunt It” ! We are very proud to offer you this one as a part of the free track series as it totally embodies our vision of club music and proceeds to blur the musical boundaries even more. Full credits due to Sho Stoppa ) and Track Officialz for the original beat. Please support them if you like it.

It’s a spacy, heavy breathing laced club tool riddim that’s bound to set off some fire alarms, while also paying tribute to the Pelican Fly family’s idea of the weird, fun places dance music can go.
