“Here today, gone tomorrow.” Such is true with the latest slab from Dutch bastion of uber-cool house, Sleazy Beats Black Ops. Their 8th installment is a solo outing from fellow Dutchmen and one half of production team, Fouk, Hans Peeman aka Junktion. There is obviously a lot to admire about his “The Great Unknown EP,” aside from the staggering level of quality production put into the release, we get an exceptional foray into true deep house music. In an age where countless tunes are masquerading under what the current zeitgeist deems as “Deep House,” it’s refreshing to have a talent, let alone an imprint, that is so dialed in to what I could only describe as “proper Deep House.” Chuck Roberts said it best: “House is a feeling”… and feeling is certainly what we have here.

The title cut is a carefree, breezy number with exceptional sample work, thick-as-molases chords and a slick cowbell riff (hopefully Marvin Gaye’s estate won’t catch wind of this one!) On the flip-side, “Solitude” channels a more melancholic groove with enveloping pads, tribal rhythms and chants and a locked bass line to keep the hips swangin. Closer, “Watching You Sleep” is my pick with it’s chunky guitar samples, heavy swung claps and hats and cooing vocals.

Some real detective work, and a fair bit of coin, will be required to snag your own copy of this vinyl only release. There are currently copies for sale via Discogs for close to $40… still worth the quid, if you ask me.
