Frank Ocean – Nostalgia, Ultra

Frank Ocean is another member of hyped up rap crew OFWGKTA AKA Odd Future and here’s his smooth, crooning but still swagging mixtape “Nostalgia, Ultra” for you all to enjoy.

“My name is Frank Ocean. I grew up in New Orleans. I’m from Odd Future. I wrote Nostalgia, Ultra in spring 2010. I think I have Synesthesia. I feel more like some type of visual artist than a musician when I’m working. I just mean my process is more about imagery. Maybe people wanna call it a certain genre because I’m a black guy singing. I don’t really mind. To be honest, I don’t think much about it. I categorize it in iTunes as Bluegrass or Death Metal usually. I’m pretty sure I have Synesthesia though. I also wear a Kippah from time to time. I smoke Marijuana for anxiety. Oh, and I used to battle-rap in High School.”

Joyce Muniz – Carnaval Mixtape 2011

Like Humphrey Bogart said in a classic movie: I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship…

Joyce Muniz provided us with an amazing Carnival mixtape last year and the Carnival season is upon us once again so we continue the tradition but this time we get the classics. Take it away Joyce!

“Another year passed, back again in cold freezing Vienna while my friends in Brasil already prepare for Carnival. I do get a lot of inspriation from listening to traditional Brasilian Music. Therefore, the next installment for my Carnival mixtape for Discobelle focusses more on the old Brasil stuff. I was lucky enough to spend my entire last 3 days with this mix listening to tons of old Brasil Vinyl records putting them all back into my latop. This is not only Tropical – this here is the original Brasil shit!!”

Oneman – Ninety Three Mixtape

Oneman with a mix for Lucky Me, another level and this will accompany us for a long time.

“Peace to Nikita

First time we ever met Bok Bok was at Ballers Social, the night Joey used to run on our behalf in Glasgow. I remember sittin backstage in Stereo (Sushon’s second show with Joe in Glasgow) with a blinking bar light, sat on cheap plastic seating with Jack Revill aka Jackmaster talking about how metronome-tight Oneman was – How he was ‘techno tight’. I mean, a DJ’s-DJ is kind of a rare thing in 2011 when even the guy who cleans your windows probably fucks with Serato. But Oneman is just that and here he explains why with an excellent tracklisting that’s so on-point with references we love that we feel almost embarrassed like he dropped the Quiet Storm instrumental in just for us. Big up the head of 502.”

Cut Copy – Need You Now

Australian trio Cut Copy just released their third album, the mesmerizing electropop effort “Zonoscope”, on Modular Records. Here’s the video for the single “Need You Now” and the band also did a mixtape entitled “A Tale Of Two Journeys”. Catch Cut Copy pretty much all over the world during the rest of the year.

The mixtape is described as being: “A medley of hits performed live at the Island Diamond Dance Hall in ’87 by Bobby Boomerang and his band.”

Jacques Renault

Jacques Renault – SOB.012

A funky discofilled mixtape from NYC producer/dj Jacques Renault for UK club night Streets Of Beige, perfect for a monday morning and this has us dancing around the office.

“The four pillars of Beige have always been flaunted but disco still hasn’t been represented on the mix front. So it’s a great pleasure to have our first one curated by none other than Jacques Renault, a New York disco legend who transcends his US roots to bring slavish, daring beats to UK shores. Wrapped in silken swing, he slings samples off the hook with the delights of the oft-sampled Imagination making a sly appearance and half-time jive and jazz giving the mix ample stomp to see the night off.

A rare gem, but also a massively under appreciated producer, Jacques Renault has touched house, tech and disco heads alike. A sly smile for NY, and a hot touch of rare slap bass, this is going to be a funk journey from which you’ll never return.”

Presk

Presk

Truants continue on releasing awesome mixtapes! This time it’s up and coming producer from Dutch soil, Presk, also known as Pieter Willems. Presk has releases coming up on Fourth Wave, the new Ramp sub label and Doc Daneeka’s label Ten Thousand Yen in the next few months. Here’s his solid new mixtape for Truants and it truly sounds like that perfect combination of House and dub what I’m always after.
