Adrian Recordings – Advent Sunday Mixtape #3: Pocketknife

The third mixtape of the Adrian Recordings Advent Sunday Mixtape Series 2010 comes from Brooklyn based producer Pocketknife. Perfect sunday listening while you’re sipping mulled wine and eating gingerbread cookies. Check out what our friends at Adrian Recordings had to say about the mix:

“We are proud to present Pocketknife. Earlier this year this disco star did a brilliant remix of the This Is Head track “0007” and now he has picked and mixed together his blend of favorites from the Adrian Recordings catalogue 2010.

Pocketknife was previously partner with Theo Parrish and now he throws down his own disco jams as well as own unique remixes. Exploding in blogs with remixes from such different stars as Arthur Russell, Liars, Lykke Li, Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Nico, Yeasayer and Alicia Keys. And our own favorite recreation of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire”. In 2011 we’re looking forward to his upcoming release on label !K7.”

Halloween mix megapost

The season of spooky is upon us and we here at Discobelle decided to gather a couple of the Halloween mixes that we think deserves a little special attention. Get ready to be scared silly.

We start off with a grueling doom/stoner mix from the Finnish masters of bass, Sharkslayer.

Sharkslayer – Stoned Cold Graveyardie Mix vol.2 – Craving For Blood (Mediafire)

Then the British duo Evil Nine of course does their Halloween mix, the third edition is even more haunting then before.

“Oh hey! It’s that time of year again; the time of year where we spend a incredibly long day in the studio listening to incredibly dark and depressing music and dialogue from old horror movies until it drives us fucking insane. We’ve risked our nerves and sanity to bring you this lovely collection of VHS era electronic horror soundtracks by popular artists such as Chuck Cirino, Tanizaki Tetora, Simon Boswell and Terry Taylor. Plus it includes four previously unreleased Evil Nine horror tracks. VHS ‘Party’ is maybe overdoing it a bit, we’re not completely sure how you’re supposed to party to it but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it’s spooky bounty all the same. Have fun! X”

Evil Nine’s VHS Halloween Party Part Three (2010) by Evil Nine

Our old friend over in NYC, Pocketknife decided to celebrate Halloween with a pagan mix.

“As the leaves fall in the woods and the bonfires are lit, a new mix for you focusing on the darker rituals of the season with pagan pop, mystical dance tunes and haunted sound collages…a clank here, a distant chant there. I also included some reworks from the first Canyon Dancing as well as the yet-to-be-released Canyon Dancing 2 and the in-the-works CD3.”

Pocketknife Presents: EXTRA ALCHEMY by Pocketknife

Babe Rainbow over in Canada makes things even more bloodcurlingly scary with his slowed down and chopped n screwed hip hop mix.

Let Me Buy U, Anne Drank Vol. 2 (Halloween Edition) by Babe Rainbow

London producer Deadboy hands in his addition to the Halloween mixvagaza, “no tracklist, but features music from The Fog, Zombie Flesh Eaters, Suspiria, The Beyond, Zombi, Blakula and more.”

Boy 8 Bit goes creepy with his horror movie mix.

Boy 8-Bit – 2006 Halloween Special!!! by boy8bit

We end things with DJ 7L (of The Bladerunners) and his horror score/movie sampling mix.

DJ 7L – Music To Be Murdered By (Mediafire)

Get Around To It

Mr Skooby Laposky AKA Pocketknife has been a long time friend and favorite of Discobelle. This is his disco stomping interpretation of the Arthur Russell track “Get Around To It”. The track is taken from the Arthur Russell tribute album “Electric Minds”, which was just released and it also features the soulful vocal offerings of Joe Worricker that seamlessly blends with Pocketknifes delicious production work.

Manicured Noise – Metronome (Cousin Cole remix)

This is the latest remix from Cousin Cole, which came out monday on Caroline True Records. Manicured Noise was a late 70s post-punk band from Manchester – it’s a remix of their song “Metronome” which was done for a remix EP along with mixes from Pocketknife, Jon Da Silva (resident at the legendary Hacienda club in the 80s/90s), and Wedderkopp + Taylor. Here’s a description from Cole:

I took the song on a pretty different direction from the original (big sax!) and it has gotten a great response with all kinds of crowds as I’ve been playing it out over the past few months — probably the biggest response of anything I’ve done recently. The label gave me a short edit to send out to blogs. It’s missing the second half of the track (with the big breakdown) but it’s a good bitrate.

Tambourine Dream

We just received an e-mail from NYC producers/djs Cousin Cole and Pocketknife:

“Our “Tambourine Dream” mix CD has been sold out for a long time now, and Pocketknife and I are hard at work on the sequel. In the mean time, we decided to upload the first one for streaming.”

This folky mix CD was our soundtrack for the better part of this spring and summer so go check it out.

Pocketknife – Self Titled Magazine mix + Cousin Cole – Ministry Of Sound mix

Another sunday post and more excellent mixes from the Flagrant Fowl camp AKA Pocketknife and Cousin Cole. Here’s the lodown:

“The good folks over at Self-Titled Magazine invited Cousin Cole and I to DJ at their next Oscillations party which happens to be next Thursday over at Studio B. They wanted to showcase some of our upcoming releases too, so I put together a mix of old and new Flagrant Fowl tracks with some current non-Flagrant jams that weaves it all together like a Cosby sweater. We’re excited for you to hear our new remixes, plus recent additons to the Flagrant Fowl family, Youth and Three Card Monte. Check it out!”
