Still reeling from last nights Smuts party with Bok Bok and Spoek, albeit the club wasn’t packed both Bok Bok and Spoek gave us a pounding with killer sets of bass induced madness and kwaito fun.

Anyway, we got something completely different than that with these two terrifyingly intriguing remixes by Salem of the Gucci Mane tracks “Bird Flu” and “Round One”.

The release of the new single “Frost” from Salem, in our opinion one of the most interesting bands around, is due tomorrow and it’s a limited edition 7″ single with foil embossed cover which will be available via Audraglint or the Salem MySpace page. It’s another hauntingly dark and eerie piece that slowly sucks you in.

Fitting for this pretty much non-existent summer weather we’re having here in Sweden at the moment, here’s a mix that Salem did for 20 Jazz Funk Greats which just happens to be one of the best blogs around.

“…a disarming patchwork of haunted juke hall malevolence, cave crunk atmospherics, brain breaking tekno noise, and crackling transmissions from a childhood spent floating down beautiful starlit rivers in the constant glare of hidden monsters.”

Our infatuation with Salem continues, this track is taken from their EP release on the Japanese Big Love label and that EP is limited to 300 copies.

Michigan trio Salem just released their new EP “Water” on Merok Records (their debut release in the UK) and we can offer you the track “When U Sleep”. It’s a hypnotizing, eerie drummachine laced number with haunting vocals that sucks you into the ghostly world of Salem only to spit you out, making you long for more. One of our favorite bands to emerge this year, Salem will definetely be doing it big in 2009…

Salem – Dirt (video)

Patrik North of Summer Lovers Unlimited and Acephale Records fame just e-mailed us about the disturbing yet eerily beautiful “Dirt” video from Salem. It was filmed and directed by Salem themselves in their hometown of Traverse City, Michigan.

Look out for their new EP on Merok Records come October, in the meantime there’s still a few copies left of “Yes I Smoke Crack” EP at places like Turntable Lab, Rough Trade or Pure Groove. You should try and get it ASAP.

Salem – Brustreet

Patrick North (from SLU fame) hooked us up with this gem. SALEM will be the debut on his brand new label Acephale The record is due to be finished up in a few weeks and it’s pretty much already sold out. The sound is kind of hard to describe but here is Patricks attempt: “there is a huge gothy shoegaze thing going on but they also incoroporate elements of southern rap, juke and screw. Comparable bands are The Knife, Chromatics, Burial, Cocteau Twins etc etc.”

This is their interpretation of Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia” – it’s entitled “Brustreet”. An eerie and hauntingly beautiful version.
