Jean Nipon – Girl Complex EP

It’s been a while since we’ve heard the schizophrenic sampling styles of Jean Nipon, one of the core members of the now sadly deceased Parisian Institubes label.

Now he’s resurfacing with a new release on the increasingly prolific Silverback Recordings label – “The Girl Complex” EP.

Complete with one heckuva remix from Night Slugs alumni Jam City, the package also comes with a minimalist little re-edit from the boys in Voltron – a blissed out piece of melodic electronica with drums popping up and fading away in the background that sounds like a 3ball guarachero rhythm that’s been given a shot of morphine. You can grab the Voltron remix for free below:

Also, revisit the Voltron “Freshmen EP” on Juno if you missed it the first time around!

The Phantom – EP2

Silverback Recordings’ new EP from The Phantom is going to be a vinyl only affair on January 15th, featuring four new original tracks, no fluff, no remixes, no filler. Already debuting to some big reactions from the following names:

Martelo: “BRUV this shit is incredible!!! i cant wait to play all this!!!!!”
Ikonika: “Ceremony is really good, thanks”
Lol Boys : “I would buy 5 copies of this EP”
Jean Nipon : “this is a new genre : liquidgothic house, don’t miss this wave guys ! ”
Hackman : “Ceremony and Colosus are brilliant”
Coni : “Great EP, Gothic is my fav! Always big stuff on silverback”
Dubbel Dutch : “Gothic is the jam! Really diggin it”
Canblaster : “I really like Ceremony, the piano reminds me of some video games I used to play”
Nick Catchdubs: “ceremony is cool!”
Brenmar : “yo!!! i LOVE Gothic!!!”
Lil Silva : “yh that gothic & voyeur nice man i like that colossus too”
Roundtable knights: “Thanks so much for this!
Really love the A1 [Ceremony]! Yeahhh”
Teki Latex :”i love ceremony and voyeur and gothic reminds me of a cross between fakely arabic timbo/dre/quik r&b beats a la “truth hurts”, and bokbokian grime ”
Chaos in the cbd : “The whole Ep is next level shows such a good range of style for me ceremony and gothic are the tracks but i would play it all”

While you won’t be able to pick this up digitally, Silverback have been kind enough to provide a Soundcloud preview of the EP that you can stream here, as well as a download of a free track that didn’t make its way onto the EP. “Late Night Sex” starts as a simmering shuffle that’s barely audible, and slowly works violin, pulsating bells and a bevy of other unexpected effects – a symphonic piece that drops off into nothingness just as it appears to be gaining steam.

KRUEGER - GALACTICA EP (SIL008)

Kreuger – Galactica EP

“Synth-seared Electropic 808 rollers from the Silverback clan, backed with deeper house and future crunk-style remixes. Much like his labelmates Nguzunguzu and Damu, Krueger’s ‘Galactica’ is about the flashy swagger sound, firing shades-in-the-club synths and manicured machine syncopation to bump with, while ‘Nou’ hits into a class fusion of electronica melodies and tribal ruffige. On a more mellow tip, Bambounou slydes with sweeter keys while Sinjin Hawke comes big and bilious with remixes of ‘Galactica’.”

Huge new release from the folks at Silverback Recordings – Get it HERE and listen to the classification-defying “Nou” in full below.

“Grown Folk’s “Droptop EP” for Silverback Recordings shows the Canadian duo at their best as they craft some of the finest summer tracks of the year. “Droptop” opens proceedings in style with sun bathed synths, seductive vocals and bass, carving out a house track of the highest order.”

Voltron – Freshmen EP

Today marks the release of the latest offering on Discobelle Records, Voltron delivers the goods with their stunning debut EP aptly titled “Freshmen EP”. Grab it at our favorite digital music outlet such as Juno.

With influences ranging from Baltimore ghetto beats over gay seventies disco singers to Chicago DJs who overdosed more than 20 years ago, Silverback Recordings co-founders Voltron have no lack of inspiration. Curating some gigantic releases in the past year, the Belgium based trio are now showing their dedication to proper dance music through their Discobelle Records debut release. Dubbed the “Freshmen EP”, it’s actually anything but – a series of blazing and polished “UK-garage-meets-soulful-house-in-the-bathroom-of-a-rave” productions that showcase a vibrant dancefloor energy as well a depth perfectly suited to headphones. Call “Be For Real” the futuristically techy goth house version of “Mr. Me Too” by the Clipse if you wanna, only replace the “uh huhs” with an infectious female vocal hook, shimmering filter sweeps and a rising and falling synth line that makes you feel like your vertebrae is crumpling in on itself. Similarly, the flip track “Don’t Stop” could popularize the term “sophistigarage” with its piercing, darting percussive strength. Employing some bashy drums around the edges of chopped stuttering vocals and echoing xylophone vibes, it feels and sounds like part of the feverish dreams of a hungover diva on a Sunday afternoon in New York.

On remix duties, Manchester native XXXY weaves some magic following his breakout “You Always Start It/Ordinary Things” EP on Ten Thousand Yen with a tune destined for many repeat plays. Wisely letting the vocals get carried along a landslide of hazy, organically textured house, XXXY plays up the longing-filled vocal hook before setting down some acid washed bursts on some kind of futuristic electronic xylophone.

And like emergency room medics speeding through the backalleys of LA in a rickety ambulance with fake plates, Nguzunguzu jolt some new life into “Be For Real” with blazingly fast blasts of pulsating loops simulating what it’s like to have a defibrillator pressed against you for five minutes. Catchy and rife with urgency, it sounds like coming out from a near-death experience with cardiac arrest or what it feels like to have a 135bpm irregular heartbeat.

Meanwhile, The Phantom brings forward an effortlessly danceable jam that weaves in and out of a dubby, garage basement sound. Punctuated by a “HA” sound effect that could be equally at home in a Proxy track, it’s the one that might get you jacking your body without even realizing you’re doing it.

On a similar tip, J Dixon attacks “Be For Real” with a barrage of cowbells and percussion, only to drop everything and let the vocoder vocals come through and then build up a conga-backed, maraca shaking quiltwork of sound.

Finally Ultravid’s interpretation is a slice of the musical “new flesh”, straight out of videodrome: pulsating drums melding with human flesh and lazerlike synths colliding with human voices in the middle of a dark dancefloor. Long after the track’s over, the vocals will be rattling around inside the misty recesses of your head.

The fellas did a mix to promote the release, and it’s been spinned repeatedly here at Discobelle HQ.

Urulu – Kookaburra (Damu Remix)

What do we know about Urulu? Not much. Maybe it’s an LA artist who’s been incorporating samples from youtube digging and live recordings into organically flavored dance music. Maybe they just dropped a new EP on Get Flavor Records. Maybe.

Details about Damu’s identity other than the hooded silhouette of his Silverback Recordings album EP is a bit more available, but what’s really worth talking about is how he’s twisted the original’s breezy drums, carefree chants and kookaburra sound effects into something that sounds like it was recorded in the middle of a tropical amazon bunker that’s shaded by the shadow of a gigantic cell phone reception tower.

Grab the jilting piece of smoking cauldron house music below, and wait for the Prince Club remix and several other original Urulu tracks to drop on April 1st at yr favorite online music shops.

Nguzunguzu – Mirage EP Promo Mix

Silverback Recordings is a small but exciting new label out of Belgium, the brainchild of the Ultravid and Voltron crews. They’ve just started to push their third release which is the absolutely smashing “Mirage EP” from hyped Los Angeles duo Nguzunguzu, the EP will be out October 11th. What we’ve heard from the EP so far showcases the continuation of their brand of hypnotic and beatfilled futuristic dance music that pits the more UK dance orientated sound with the more hip hop/r ‘n’ b influenced dance music coming out of the US. To celebrate the release, Nguzunguzu gives us an absolute frantic stunner of a promo mix.
